What is this? DH has worms - gross pic, sorry

Sorry for the gross picture. NC’d because this is disgusting and I’m ashamed even whilst being anonymous.

DH is a big lumbering former rugby player. He eats 4000-5000 calories per day, is 6’3 and 100kg. It’s a joke with everyone we know that he’s a dustbin. Now, he doesn’t exercise at all but has gained no weight. He’s constantly starving and constantly eating - if he doesn’t eat for a few hours then he gets light-headed and irritable. He also has memory issues and can’t focus on things (I’ve posted before about this and was told to look at ADHD and diabetes). ADHD just doesn’t tie in with other things (he hasn’t always been this way) and I’ve been trying to encourage him to get tested for diabetes.

However, he’s just had a tummy ache and thought he might have diarrhoea. He’s gone to the toilet and there’s massive worms in it that appear to be dead. I can’t identify what kind they are - I’m sure as hell not asking someone I know in real life. Definitely not threadworm.

I’ve seen some things online about catching them abroad and we visited SE Asia for a long time but not since 2018!! On top of that, I found an article about Malaysia and whipworm - we spent a lot of time in Malaysia.

Can anyone identify this? Has he really had it since 2018? Do we all need testing/checking/treating? What about the dogs? Can this wait until Tuesday or should we go to the OOH tomorrow?

Happy New Year folks! 😫

You need to ask your doctor to be sure.

@PleaseDontBugMe just because you are here. Best way to treat a constantly occurring threadworm issue. Going on for years in an adult. Ovex only ever holds it at bay!

I'm really sorry, I wouldn't be able to give any advice on treatment, you'd have to see a doctor (which I'm not), who specialises in treating difficult cases. I know this can happen to some people through no fault of their own, and causes a lot of anxiety, but it should be treatable with the right advice.

Love the fact that a parasitologist commented on the post! So amazing :) I would deffo think they were correct but keep the sample and double check with the GP.

To the parasitologist (sorry forgotten your handle) but what kind of parasite can cause boils or absecesses which might go from person to person?

toocold54 · 31/12/2022 23:49

If you hadn’t said they were moving I would have said undigested bean sprouts or tissue lining.

I had a similar thing almost identical and went to the gp who said it was intestinal lining.

The fact that they were moving i’m more likely to say roundworm.

Fraaahnces · 01/01/2023 00:00

Tapeworms break up into segments like that. Could be tapeworm, but they’re very rare unless he’s been eating “organic” pork and beef, or he’s been eating meat in Asian street markets.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 01/01/2023 00:06

As a nurse that’s worked in endoscopy, worms are surprisingly common and easily treated with medication. Speak to your pharmacist.

I caught roundworm while travelling in Malaysia, they didn’t ‘appear’ 🤢 til two years afterwards, apparently they can live that long. I thought it was IBS!
doctor gave me some worm tablets, mebendazole I think. He did say I should have kept them to take in! They didn’t look like this though, they were rounder and fatter, like thick earthworms but whitish (sorry 🙈) these look flatter, more like a tapeworm. I’d put some in a jar and see the doctor. Good luck!

How did you know you had them? And any idea how?

Turkeytwizzlerz · 01/01/2023 00:10

😬

EllaPaella · 01/01/2023 00:13

Those are not threadworms.. they look like beansprouts!

SharksInTheTea · 01/01/2023 00:17

PleaseDontBugMe · 31/12/2022 22:51

Parasitologist here - not tapeworm, they come as a chain of rectangular proglottids. Not roundworm either, they look more like anaemic earthworms.

Not parasites of any sort, sorry - I vote stalks of some kind of vegetable matter. If they moved it's because something next to them moved.

This is perfect mn!

Someone worries they have worms. Parasitologist comes along to look at their photos.

Sorry the way I asked that was blunt, I've been to the far east and have what I think is ibs 😐

Huffle · 01/01/2023 00:18

@Unforgettablefire I had no idea until they appeared in the loo one day after a particularly bad bout of stomach cramps. I went to GP and he asked if I’d been travelling and said I’d probably got them in Malaysia as they can go undetected for years and I had been having stomach problems. I ate all kinds of dodgy looking things while I was over there so no idea where they came from!

Hawkins001 · 01/01/2023 00:31

Damn, @Whydidimarrythis all the best and yes a chemist is advisable

BadNomad · 01/01/2023 00:34

It probably is just some undigested food matter. As someone who goes through episodes of cramping and diarrhoea due to IBS, it's not unusual to find spears of asparagus floating in the toilet. Tell him to chew his food better.

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 01/01/2023 00:34

Why the fuck am I sat here reading this on NYE?!

gettingolderbutcooler · 01/01/2023 00:39

V common. You get a tablet for the child - and one for each family member - from the pharmacy (in the uk, that is).

MissyB1 · 01/01/2023 00:43

Dh is a Gastroenterologist, he says tapeworm.

Oh god how awful. Well I saw all the dodgy stuff and stayed away Grin you're braver than me!

NYE2023 · 01/01/2023 00:49

not Tape worm - they are usually segmented . Looks like round worm . You will be able to get something from pharmacy . Treat the whole family and make sure dogs etc are up to date with worming .

OldFan · 01/01/2023 00:54

People can get them from eating undercooked meat or something @Whydidimarrythis , if he likes his steak rare he might've just happened to eat one that has some in.

Doctors for sure, hope he feels ok. That might be all of it out x

He could just bring the pic to the docs.

funnelfan · 01/01/2023 01:53

Definitely looks like whipworm. Good news is it’s treated with the same drug that’s in Ovex, but you take more of it for longer than you do for threadworms. You need to talk to a doctor or pharmacist before self treating because if it’s a heavy infection then another drug may be recommended first. And all the family and and cats and dogs need treating to.

Moro93 · 01/01/2023 01:56

OP, has he actually eaten beansprouts or anything similar in the past few days/week? If he has then I think it’s likely. In the first post you said they were dead but then said they were moving so I’m not sure. If he hasn’t eaten anything like that, and they were alive, then definitely go to your GP when they reopen.

I just seen images on Google of undigested beansprouts that look very similar to the photo in the OP. I even seen articles of them in petri dishes because they’d been taken to a doctor as suspected worms who then had to inform the patient they were beansprouts 😂

ilo · 01/01/2023 01:59

Ew

LeisureSuitLarry · 01/01/2023 02:06

There's probably been times when there have been masses of them hanging out of his arsehole, all wriggling about. Happy New year.
