What is this? DH has worms - gross pic, sorry

Sorry for the gross picture. NC’d because this is disgusting and I’m ashamed even whilst being anonymous.

DH is a big lumbering former rugby player. He eats 4000-5000 calories per day, is 6’3 and 100kg. It’s a joke with everyone we know that he’s a dustbin. Now, he doesn’t exercise at all but has gained no weight. He’s constantly starving and constantly eating - if he doesn’t eat for a few hours then he gets light-headed and irritable. He also has memory issues and can’t focus on things (I’ve posted before about this and was told to look at ADHD and diabetes). ADHD just doesn’t tie in with other things (he hasn’t always been this way) and I’ve been trying to encourage him to get tested for diabetes.

However, he’s just had a tummy ache and thought he might have diarrhoea. He’s gone to the toilet and there’s massive worms in it that appear to be dead. I can’t identify what kind they are - I’m sure as hell not asking someone I know in real life. Definitely not threadworm.

I’ve seen some things online about catching them abroad and we visited SE Asia for a long time but not since 2018!! On top of that, I found an article about Malaysia and whipworm - we spent a lot of time in Malaysia.

Can anyone identify this? Has he really had it since 2018? Do we all need testing/checking/treating? What about the dogs? Can this wait until Tuesday or should we go to the OOH tomorrow?

Happy New Year folks! 😫

I'm going to f off now, but happy new year!

PleaseDontBugMe · 31/12/2022 23:04

It's true that roundworm can come out of your nose (or be coughed up) though.

Unforgettablefire · 31/12/2022 23:10

I've been there with the tablets and the tapeworm too only the worm was at the other end. Just a segment.
I don't like pasta anyway but the roundworm put me off beansprouts for a long time. I think my cats were getting them from mice.

Not suggesting your dp eats mice op! Grin

@Allmyarseandpeggymartin It depends - anything from malaria and other blood parasites, to schistomes (which you can get from swimming in various much hotter parts of the world) to Echinococcus which can form cysts in various parts of your body and can cause neurocysticercosis (very rare, and can be seen as large cysts on the brain), to various worms, and microscopic faecal parasites like Entamoeba histolytica etc.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 31/12/2022 23:13

@PleaseDontBugMe Fabulous!

PleaseDontBugMe · 31/12/2022 23:14

And insect related parasites like bot fly/tumbu fly larvae (don't google if you're squeamish!)

Fascinated by this! Have you ever removed a botfly larvae? We need a thread on parasites!

Can't get worms from swimming in the Cam either - that's a new one!

Damn. I dare say the surgeon was having a little joke and I've believed it all these years!

PleaseDontBugMe · 31/12/2022 22:51

Parasitologist here - not tapeworm, they come as a chain of rectangular proglottids. Not roundworm either, they look more like anaemic earthworms.

Not parasites of any sort, sorry - I vote stalks of some kind of vegetable matter. If they moved it's because something next to them moved.

Mumsnet is truly the gift that keeps giving.

tara66 · 31/12/2022 23:19

Regarding your DH's memory loss and lack of focus - you do know it is thought playing rugby can possibly cause brain damage?

Redburnett · 31/12/2022 23:20

Whipworms maybe?

Huffle · 31/12/2022 23:23

I caught roundworm while travelling in Malaysia, they didn’t ‘appear’ 🤢 til two years afterwards, apparently they can live that long. I thought it was IBS!
doctor gave me some worm tablets, mebendazole I think. He did say I should have kept them to take in! They didn’t look like this though, they were rounder and fatter, like thick earthworms but whitish (sorry 🙈) these look flatter, more like a tapeworm. I’d put some in a jar and see the doctor. Good luck!

Verbena17 · 31/12/2022 23:23

Check out the photo of tapeworm - same colour and everything!

allboysherebutme · 31/12/2022 23:24

Get some worm tablets from the chemist, treat the whole family. X

SlashBeef · 31/12/2022 23:27

I feel filthy after reading this 😆 I want to deworm myself just in case!

If you look closely, the tapeworm is more even and the same width pretty much all the way along. If you look closer still, it will be in segments, but you may not be able to see that in the photo.

Moro93 · 31/12/2022 23:30

It massively looks like undigested beansprouts, even the thinner bits at the end. I avoid eating beansprouts for this reason!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 31/12/2022 23:30

@Verbena17 Looks like a noodle to me bab

tolerable · 31/12/2022 23:32

beansprouts

CornishTiger · 31/12/2022 23:32

@PleaseDontBugMe just because you are here. Best way to treat a constantly occurring threadworm issue. Going on for years in an adult. Ovex only ever holds it at bay!

Unforgettablefire · 31/12/2022 23:16

Luckily, no! That's for the medics 😁

Verbena17 · 31/12/2022 23:35

@PleaseDontBugMe yes - just saw you’re a parasitologist. My first thought before I found that webpage was bean sprouts.

Curioushorse · 31/12/2022 23:36

Hello! I lived in East Africa for years. It's not tapeworm or thread worm. Can be definite about that!

Your doctor will love it though. Keep samples. I remember the excitement the MSF doctors used to get when someone pooed out a tapeworm. They'd all come round and then lay it out in the garden and examine it. True story.

BadNomad · 31/12/2022 23:37

Oh! Yes. The cure is to take him outside, shoot him, then burn the body.
