Blood Sugar

Have a blood sugar monitoring kit at home now, and have just tested my son's - his was 5.3.

Tested mine and it's 13.3

Isn't this high? I normally test it in work and it's between 4 and 7.

Why are you testing?

It depends on when you ate last really

heartchakra · 31/12/2022 16:56

That is high really as a rule over 7 as you've said is higher than it should be

NewBootsAndRanty · 31/12/2022 16:57

Yep that's high.

Redo and make sure your finger is clean. Anything over 11 is immediately a diabetes diagnosis but not having a clean finger can make it wildly high.

EddietheEagle · 31/12/2022 17:02

I'm unwell with pneumonia at the moment, apparently being unwell can make it higher than it usually is?

Cleaning finger now

I did this once after having eaten some sultanas!!! So not only was my actual blood sugar high but my fingers were covered in sugar!!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/12/2022 17:05

Any infection or even stress can increase blood sugar but 11 is high

EddietheEagle · 31/12/2022 17:06

Washed hands and tested again, 13.9

Do you have any urine dip sticks? Check for sugar / ketones.

LIZS · 31/12/2022 17:09

Why do you gave the kit? Even most t2 diabetics don't home test. Spikes can be due to infection, eating sugary/carb snacks, meals or drinks. One reading is not enough.

I think I do yes, but I've just done a wee so will have to wait until I need one again

If you’re 2+ hours after eating and it’s not between 4 and 7 you’ve likely got hyperglycaemia and possibly type 2 diabetes,
you need a blood test to confirm.

Go get fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin and HbA1c tested. Start on keto immediately to reverse your high blood sugar.

Its a lifestyle disease with a lifestyle solution.

EddietheEagle · 31/12/2022 17:10

I'm thinking it must be the infection. I'm pretty poorly with it

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 31/12/2022 17:11

You need to seek medical attention.

LIZS · 31/12/2022 17:12

Rather an oversimplification. That is only part of a picture.

Hotsweatymomspagetti · 31/12/2022 17:12

I would still call 111 for advice, it’s too high

MumofOneplusOneD · 31/12/2022 17:15

Definitely seek medical help, call 111. A lot more adults are being diagnosed with type 1 now and that is very different from type 2, it needs urgent medical attention so best to get it checked out and rule it out. Also if your poorly it could be type 1 causing it rather than the other way around. Undiagnosed type 1 often results in dka which can be mistaken for the flu. I’m not trying to scaremonger, my daughter has type 1 so I know how urgent her diagnosis was. Have been feeling thirsty? Going to the toilet more often?

EddietheEagle · 31/12/2022 17:17

I'm on prednisolone for my pneumonia, I've just checked and raised blood sugars is one of the side effects of this medicine

I've got pneumonia, I saw my GP in the week as my chest was very noisy and cracking. I've got antibiotics and oral steroids for that.

I'm always thirsty anyway, ever since I was a child so hard to tell really.

Was your son unwell or why did you think he needed testing? Just wondered why you tested him? I would test both of you first thing before any food and take any results to GP - fasting, random and plus 2 hrs after eating are all useful to know -
13.9 is high but see what it is tomorrow-

Nap1983 · 31/12/2022 20:18

If you’re on steroids they raise your blood sugar. I’m my ward we test anyone on steroids BM daily regardless of wether they have Diabetes. Also you are absolutely not going to go into DKA with that reading…

CockSpadget · 31/12/2022 20:22

it is high, but it’s not an emergency high, so don’t panic. Yes, the infection and pred will have raised it, but you still need to visit your GP in the new year to get it checked again properly.
