We have a nitty gritty comb and it really works well. Bought it from the local chemist!

lostandlonely · 03/02/2008 21:21

you can get nitty gritty free from docs... it is fab

JackieNo · 03/02/2008 21:21

Nitty Gritty worked for us. Haven't tried the other one though. I think you might be able to get the Nitty Gritty on prescription somehow, but not sure how you do that. Nitty Gritty do have their own website but I don't know if that's the cheapest way to buy.

EddieMonsoon · 03/02/2008 21:21

Another vote for Nitty Gritty

Hulababy · 03/02/2008 21:22

lostandlonely - really? What, if I just ask? I am going to the doctors tomorrow - will he really give me one if I ask?

We have a nitty gritty too, I bought it from Boots but I did read somewhere you can get them on prescription but not sure how true that is and don't want to find out after spending £10 on it!

SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:23

I have used both.

Nitty gritty is 100* better than bug buster as it removes unhatched eggs, meaning you don't get crawlers, you don't get itchy, you don't spread them around the family & clasroom.

You also can't snap the teeth off a nitty gritty like you can a bug buster

NITTY GRITTY

JackieNo · 03/02/2008 21:23

Found this on their website - to give to your doctor to get it on prescription

heronsfly · 03/02/2008 21:24

And another for the nitty gritty it removes the eggs as well.I bought mine from local chemist but nitty gritty site has a downloadable letter for gps.

SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:24

you can get a perscription if your doc is in a good moood

otherwise £10 from boots

or ebay probably for about £7-8.

don't bother with the potions

Hulababy · 03/02/2008 21:26

Can nitty gritty be used as prevention too, like the bug buster kit?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 03/02/2008 21:28

There's a spray for prevention.

SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:28

What is in bug buster that is prevention? I thought it was just combs?

JackieNo · 03/02/2008 21:29

But you don't have to use the Nitty Gritty comb with the nitty gritty oil stuff - we've mostly just used it with conditioner - seems to work just as well.

Hulababy · 03/02/2008 21:29

SMS - just mean that you can use it all the time as part of a normal washing routine, rather than just when head lice detected.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:30

TBH I think that hte efficacy of any preventions is in doubt.

You can get a tea tree and lavendar spray from some supermarkets and places like savers that are much cheaper than the nitty gritty branded stuff. Not sure how well any of them work.

Nemoandthefishes · 03/02/2008 21:30

I got a nitty gritty from ebay for about $6 posted

Hulababy · 03/02/2008 21:32

We already use a tea tree shampoo and conditioner every week, and always wet comb too.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:32

You can. BUT the comb is quite coarse so I do only use it when suspected infection/as a treatment as I think prolonged use wouldn't be great for hte hair.

I am quite good at detecting an infection early though so I check about once a month routinely or at first hint of scratching/letter home and it works well for us.

SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:34

Can I offer a top tip for the Nitty Gritty...

The lice are not easy to see on the Nitty Gritty. Use a pint glass/jug of water to rinse the comb after a few strokes. The lice and eggs will sink to the bottom after a few minutes and you can check your haul 10mins after you have finished combing.

Hulababy · 03/02/2008 21:38

DD gets cradle cap a fair bit some seeing her itchin or little white bits in the hair is very common.

We had our very first bug visit last Friday and I found just one live lice. Didn't find anything else before, during or after treating it. Didn't find anything that looked obviously like eggs either. Was expecting more than the one. Apparently I need to retreat in 7 days - is that right? I am combing DD's hair daily with one of the basic nit comb things.

Will try and get a Nitty Gritty comb then.

OP posts:
EddieMonsoon · 03/02/2008 21:38

I do that with a glass of water. They really cant swim and its a good feeling to be getting the better of them. By the way, I agree that the prevention treatments dont work

Hulababy · 03/02/2008 21:39

I currently check every weekend, after wet combing with a tea tree conditioner, and aain when hair is dry.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:46

you should retreat every 4th/5th day to beat the life cycle.

If you have only 1 lice (and yu probably wouldn't see eggs unless you have a nitty gritty or very fine blonde hair) it was probably one that crawled across as a virgin or it was a little boy

Warning though they don't drown in the water (apparently they hold their breath) so tip them down hte sink/toilet and not back in the bath
