If you live in London you can get a service to come to the school to check and treat everyone. I think its called The Hair Detectives

SlightlyMadShrek · 03/02/2008 21:58

Right I'm moving to London [ink]

CiaoBella · 03/02/2008 22:05

This nit nurse company, how do they manage to get rid of the head lice in school?

moondog · 03/02/2008 22:08

nITTY gRITTY IS FANTASTIC.i AM WILLING MY KIDS TO GET LICE AGAIN SO THAT I have the pleasure of using it again.

GodzillasAbominableBumcheek · 03/02/2008 22:16

Agree - prevention treatments are a waste of time - you always get some poor exhausted mum (or can't be bothered mum, the jury is still out) who can't manage to de-louse her child who always spreads the little beggars all round school again, including, eventually to your child's hair. You have to use tea-tree conditioner and a common-or-garden nitcomb every four to six days to keep the numbers down.

Octothechildherder · 03/02/2008 22:18

I got a nitty gritty on prescription - needed the number as they didn;t believe me!

cadelaide · 03/02/2008 22:20

Hulababy

Timely thread for me - we had 'an issue' before Christmas. Treated, combed, kept combing - all well. Last week - all fine. Tonight - poor dd2 is back hosting wildlife again! Grrrrrrrrh!

Hulababy · 04/02/2008 08:16

Thanks SMS - will do that then!

CiaoBella, if you are still interested, the Hair Detectives www.hairdetectives.com use non-chemical methods including a special hoover!! Everyone gets checked and those that need clearing get cleared. Very sensitive and kind women apparently.

bobsmum · 05/02/2008 14:22

Our school is promoting the Bug Busting method. We had one big louse for the first time last week and it was easy to find.

Just use ordinary conditioner and 3 combs several times over the life cycle of a louse.

But unfortunately we are a v small school and there's one family who do not treat their children even though the rest of the school do, so until they leave we will be bug busting weekly

Thankfully ds thinks it's great fun as he gets a loooong bath!

And all the conditioner is finally clearing up his cradle cap at 5!

SlightlyMadShrek · 05/02/2008 17:45

Bobsmum

Our school also promote the bug busting 'method'.

However IME the Nitty Gritty comb is a much better product, so I use the Nitty Gritty comb on a bug busting timetable, but rarely pick anything up by the 3rd combing day with teh Nitty Gritty as it is so effective at removing eggs. OTOH I have found that it can actually take 3-4weeks with a Bug busting comb in practice as I think it misses some of the smaller lice/my technique isn't as good.

Chopster · 05/02/2008 18:25

i agree with sms, they are really hard to see on the nitty gritty, so I think it is best to get a cheap normal comb for checking for infestations, where you can see immediately if you have a problem. fwiw the nitty gritty didn't work that well for me, and I had to resort to chemicals.

Surfermum · 05/02/2008 18:32

Nitty Gritty definitely. I was gobsmacked how much I got out of dsd's hair that the bugbuster missed.

Whenever dd or I have caught them from her I have managed to get rid of them by just wet combing with tons of conditioner. Dsd is another matter though as she's never with us for long enough for me to really sort them out.

TurkeyLurkey · 05/02/2008 18:35

I just use the nitty gritty with conditioner and it gets everything out.

Best tenner I've ever spent.

Ok, well maybe not but its good!
