Heavy period, picture of blood

Hi. I am going to attach some pictures sorry for TMI, there is blood so be warned.
My period was 2 weeks late, and it came today really heavy. I’m 24 and I’ve never had a heavy period before. I have a 1 year old that I stopped breastfeeding 3/4 months ago, been tracking my ovulation, I’ve had normal periods up until now. I am just unsure if this is too heavy, as I’ve never had this before so is it worth me calling my GP? Or is this a normal amount? 😅 This was less than an hour of putting the pad on, and I wiped with that tissue. My periods were always regular-ish, only thing that has changed in my life with this cycle is a lot of stress, and I’ve been taking ashwaghanda and fenugreek. I don’t know if these factors could cause the late and heavy period.

I just now had a clot too

As it's different for you, I would call the GP. I don't necessarily think it's that heavy though. I've had heavy periods my whole life and this would be normal for me on my first or second day. I was told my period would get better after having my daughter but they got so much heavier and more painful. But as I said, as it's a change in what you're used to. Call the GP tomorrow.

Since I had babies my periods are shorter and heavier. It sort of feels like it all falls out at once over 2 days rather than 5. I know once you’ve had a baby your cervix doesn’t close completely. Based on both of these things I think what you are experiencing might be normal. Do you feel unwell at all?

Unsureofitall · 19/12/2022 00:18

Just seen your update. Is there any change you could have been pregnant and may be miscarrying ??

MrsMorrisey · 19/12/2022 00:19

Looks pretty normal to me.
You been vaccinated for Covid?

Amjk · 19/12/2022 00:20

@Applesandpears23 no, just usual headache, cramps, backache. But yeah I know what you mean, but since I’ve had my baby my periods have been the same, even when I stopped breastfeeding they were still the same, it’s just really different this time

It doesn't look worryingly heavy to me. Things can change a lot after pregnancy and your hormones may just be readjusting. I certainly don't think it's anything to bother the GP about but just keep an eye on it.

Amjk · 19/12/2022 00:21

@Unsureofitall i was trying for a baby, but I didn’t take a pregnancy yet as I was waiting for my husband to come from his trip. You could be right :(

OP posts:
Amjk · 19/12/2022 00:21

@MrsMorrisey no I haven’t been vaccinated yet

OP posts:
Unsureofitall · 19/12/2022 00:23

I only say that because it was 2 weeks late, which could be due to hormones though. Does take a while to settle after you have a baby. Just keep an eye on it.

Amjk · 19/12/2022 00:23

Yeah that could be it, only recently stopped breastfeeding too, it’s just weird because I’ve never had this before

Phone GP and get a appointment . There is a a thing I think called Tranexamic acid - ( in tablet form ) I was given it by GP for very heavy periods and clotting - mine was during peri menopause but do speak to GP in case that helps. Such heavy periods and clotting can be debilitating so I would say do call Gp. They will have some across this before.

Amjk · 19/12/2022 00:24

@Unsureofitall Yeah I will just keep checking! Thank you

MrsMorrisey · 19/12/2022 00:25

Id wait and see what the next one is like. Probably just hormones going nuts after stopping breastfeeding.
Us women are complex beings.

BasiliskStare · 19/12/2022 00:26

@Amjk - do check out with GP whether tranexamic acid tablets will help - worth a conversation about your particular circumstances

Amjk · 19/12/2022 00:26

@BasiliskStare yeah I might do that, it is quite painful too, I’ve never had a painful period before so it’s just quite worrying

@MrsMorrisey true! 😂 I wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe it’s just the start of my body going back to normal after all the pregnancy and breastfeeding hormones 😂 I will just see how it goes!

Id like to add; get started with your covid vaccines. Particularly if you’re trying to conceive.

Applesandpears23 · 19/12/2022 00:33

I did a quick search and according to drugs.com fenugreek can be associated with bleeding and blood clots. I would consider stopping taking both your new supplements just in case and talk to a doctor before restarting.

sjpkgp1 · 19/12/2022 00:46

I would not worry too much - but see a doc (just walk in) if it continues. I went to my docs in a mad panic as had a day of what seemed like ridiculous red blood loss and large clots. I could not keep a pad on for more than 10 minutes and kept some of the clots to take to the docs, no point in tampons, they would have just been washed out. I had previously had no trouble. Doc said that sometimes the body just has a bit of clear out, and it would sort itself. 12 hours later, it was "normal" blood loss, dwindling to nothing within 36 hours. Never had anything quite the same since. I suspect it is more common than we might think. Hope it lessens a bit and it sorts itself x

Amjk · 19/12/2022 02:06

@Applesandpears23 wow, I never knew that! Could literally be why as I’ve only started taking it this cycle. How strange I heard such good things about it 😂

OP posts:
Amjk · 19/12/2022 02:08

@sjpkgp1 thank you so much that’s really reassuring! I will just keep an eye on it and hopefully it goes down! Thanks again :) x

It doesn't look particularly heavy to me either. I have had heavy periods for years. But you know your body and if you are worried, maybe make an appt with the GP for reassurance.

Amjk · 19/12/2022 09:54

@User65432 thank you! Yeah to me this is extremely heavy, I’ve never had a heavy period! Even when I gave birth I wasn’t bleeding like this, so that’s why it was a bit worrying to me. But I’m just keeping an eye on it atm

I wouldn't worry but if you're feeling unusual cramps or pain or nausea, etc as well, then I'd speak to GP.

However, for your own peace of mind, you can still speak to your GP regardless.
