Very high blood pressure- how do I get this down quickly please?

Bit of a shock today at a routine appointment where blood pressure was taken.
Then taken again
And again.
I've now agreed to a service they kindly offered to wear a 24 hour monitor but this will be in a few weeks.
Please hit me with your best ideas to bring this down- wasn't expecting this at all.
Thank-you

how bad?
Was your reason for medical appt truly totally unrelated?
Go as zero salt in diet as you can. Is what I'd do.

Spacebears · 29/11/2022 20:58

What was your blood pressure ? Have you been stressed/anxious recently?

SukeyBenedict · 29/11/2022 21:00

What was the BP?

are you overweight?
too much salt?
stress?
family history?

Blondlashes · 29/11/2022 21:02

There is white coat syndrome - I’ve had it. Blood pressure goes up when you have it tested. In reality it’s fine when tested on the 24 hour monitor.

How high was it?

WorriedMillie · 29/11/2022 21:06

My mum presents like this- a classic case of White Coat syndrome. 24h monitors have revealed her BP to be fine
i hope it’s the same for you 🌸

Tornado70 · 29/11/2022 21:07

Whole food vegan diet

DoubleShotEspresso · 29/11/2022 21:07

Went for covid vaccine and they offered a blood pressure test.
Average result was 176/101, which Google tells me is pretty high.
Historically I've had low pressure.

I cook from scratch daily .... rarely get takeaways in fact can't remember doing so in last 6 months.
I'm a size 18 which I'm in the process of trying to reduce too . (Lockdown cooking was a bad habit!)

Also I detest salt so rarely use it in cooking.

That is high, surely they gave advice?

Doesn't that only apply to the top number though?

@DoubleShotEspresso May be white coat syndrome. I'm a nurse and have to take blood pressures ALOT. A lot of BPs drop when the patient relaxes in the chair for 15-20 minutes. Were you anxious about getting the vaccine?

IncessantNameChanger · 29/11/2022 21:12

Well that's too high if it's a true reading and not white coat.

If your overweight, loose it. Nothing else will come close to the benefits of loosing weight ( she says, over weight with high BP!) But it works

Spacebears · 29/11/2022 21:12

That is pretty high. I would be booking a gp sooo

MarshaMelrose · 29/11/2022 21:13

Get yourself a BP monitor. Only about £15. Then you can keep track of when it's higher and lower.

DeeofDenmark · 29/11/2022 21:13

If the monitor shows it is real and not just white coat syndrome then I would expect the gp to prescribe something. There are the usual lifestyle changes that can help a bit over time, but if it really is that high I would think they would want it controlled with medication. It’s a good thing they found it.

GreenLunchBox · 29/11/2022 21:14

I'd buy a home monitor if finances allow, OP. You can get a decent one for £20 these days. I'd be too worried to wait a month for the 24hr BP

Spacebears · 29/11/2022 21:14

Oops typed too fast. Yeah. Book an appointment sooner than a few weeks, preferably in the next weeks to get it checked again. Also buy a home monitor, you can get them from the chemist. To get a bigger picture to show to the dr.

dontlookgottalook · 29/11/2022 21:15

@DoubleShotEspresso do not have a double shot of expresso!

catsonahottinroof · 29/11/2022 21:15

You basically need to thin your blood, you could possibly take a low dose aspirin if you have no contra-indications (cut one in half or you can take low dose from the chemists). Cut down on salt but not too low, you do need some, try to take a good walk every day. Mine went sky high when I think I got covid (very ill) right at the start and I've had it taken a few times since and was usually fairly high. I've now got a blood pressure monitor (just a cheap one) and it is quite reassuring as you can see how much it fluctuates. Sometimes high, sometimes within range.

If it stays high you can always go on medication but I understand why you'd want to avoid this.

Sorry, but this is bad advice. You don't need to 'thin your blood' 🤔

JustDanceAddict · 29/11/2022 21:18

That’s high. Anything over 90 (lower number is the important one) is classed as high. Def buy a monitor and check at home if you can.,
