Strange contracting abdomen spasms left side

30 replies

Fingerscrossed11 · 02/11/2022 21:42

Hi,

I have been having the strangest abdomen spasms but only on the one side for quite a while. If I move in certain ways or bend down to take shoes off, sit up in the bath etc my abdomen spasms on the left side where it contracts and moves inwards. It’s very uncomfortable and I try to sit up immediately to alleviate it but sometimes it takes a few minutes to go back to normal and can leave pain for a short while afterwards.

can anyone help and has anyone experienced this?

thank you x

No idea, but I get exactly the same thing when I make similar movements. It is sooo bizarre and uncomfortable! And often painful for a bit afterwards. I have no clue what it is, and have tried googling but can't work out how to describe it.

IreneJones · 02/11/2022 22:10

Is your tummy being particularly noisy? When I've had colicky spasms it's been due to intermittent bowel obstruction.

BadAmbassador · 02/11/2022 22:14

Is it a muscular thing? I sometimes get this muscle cramp in my abdomen when I bend in a certain way, I can't predict eggnog it's going to happen. Very painful!

Hohofortherobbers · 02/11/2022 22:14

My dh gets this, it's one ab cramping

Fingerscrossed11 · 02/08/2023 22:28

It’s not cramping, it’s more like my left side of abdomen Is completely sucked in add stuck and I get rather fearful when it happens as it’s so uncomfortable and sore then it takes sometimes
seconds, and sometimes longer for what feels like a release and it goes back to normal

Wonder if it's a hernia or diverticulitis

Fingerscrossed11 · 02/08/2023 22:42

@Tilllly
thanks for your reply.
a friend said to me they thought it could be an internal hernia but for me hernias always seemed something to stick out than make tummy suck inwards but I know now it’s a thing.
Diverticulus wouldn’t surprise me either.
i seem to be the medical journals dream which keeps on giving with random, rare conditions 😕

Hernias do stick out - eventually

You know you need to see a doctor...

What has your GP said?

twoandcooplease · 12/08/2023 04:56

Oh a medical mystery!
There's some wise MNers that I've seen name or solve the most bizarre illnesses

Hopeful luck bump for you

twoandcooplease · 12/08/2023 04:58

How old are you? And have you ever given birth?
What has the gp said so far?
Does it feel like tapping or contracting?

Mirrormirror2 · 12/08/2023 07:35

Have you had a c section? Ive been having similar sensations since my c section but on the lower right side.
It feels like I imagine a hernia would, like a weird rolling/pulling/moving feeling but nothing bulges out. I feel a ‘pulse’ when feel the area with my fingers when its happening. It happens in similar circumstances that you describe.

I have a history of ruptured appendix, peritonitis and multiple adhesions, but that was prior to my c section & didn't have the sensation then!

@twoandcooplease
Ive had one V birth and 2 csections due to being in breech position. I’m 41. It’s when I move in certain positions and doesn’t happen all the time. It’s like a spasm where the left side of my abdomen turns in on itself. I then feel like some sort of release/click and it goes back to normal.
Sometimes it takes seconds, other times longer. It’s not pleasant at all, really worrying. For someone who thinks everything will pass on it’s own, this is strange for me.

Very strange. No idea what it could be but your colon sits on the left side. I was told pain there is often associated with bowels. Hope you find out what it is soon

Fingerscrossed11 · 13/08/2023 00:32

@Mirrormirror2
I have had a c section.It’s a spur of the moment involuntary sucking in of my left side, just down from naval area. There’s no warning signals it will happen. It’s maybe one inch down in left side from naval. Did you get any advice? Thanks x

@Babyenroute
thanks for your reply. I hope so too. I have had bowel issues before but after this started but then again could all be linked. it’s certainly something not normal but not to the extent I feel
i have to go to hospital but at the same time when there’s something not right you need to find out what that is x

I’ve never seen anyone about it but I have an unrelated appointment with gynae tomorrow so will mention it then. Mine is the opposite side to yours but the symptoms/sensations sound almost identical, starting soon after my c section. Im wondering if its an incisional hernia following c section. Will let you know if I get any info from them, although not holding my breath!

It's really hard to get a diagnosis for anything intestinal unless it's something really obvious. You'll end up being told it's IBS. Try taking some Buscopan while you're waiting to see the doctor.

BlackJumpsuit · 14/08/2023 15:22

Reading this again, it reminds me of a school mum I was friendly with who had a rib that kept shifting out of place, only on one side, and thought to be a post pregnancy quirk.

BlackJumpsuit · 14/08/2023 15:28

@Fingerscrossed11
It's the click you describe that made me think of that

Lee80xx · 15/08/2023 22:18

I have this exact same thing. My left side keeps cramping like a sucking in feeling for no reason. It’s not painful just weird and worrying

Fingerscrossed11 · 21/08/2023 20:28

@Mirrormirror2
did you get any info on what’s the cause?
