Are 5 foot 7 women usually skinny?

Amiagrinchh · 27/10/2022 19:46

I am 5 foot 7 and have always struggled to keep weight on. I’m not at all meaning this as a humble brag at all. People say it’s a good problem to have but I disagree. I’ve always wanted to look bigger and I have always felt quite boyish and unfeminine and I’ve had several miscarriages for which sometimes I blame myself for wondering if I don’t have enough body fat.

I don’t have a huge drive for food so if I ate according to my appetite I’d be just over 8 stone.

At 30 I decided enough was enough and I was too skinny for my age and started eating 3 square meals a day and snacks between meals. I got to 9 stone, my highest weight ever which is a big achievement for me as it never usually stays on.

I don’t look much different though 😂. People still tell me “you’re too skinny” despite me now having a very healthy BMO. Still look skinny IMO versus slim. I have long arms and legs which accentuates this I think.

So for ladies around my height. Do you think it’s hard to not look lanky and skinny at this height or taller? At what weight do you think you stop looking lanky start looking normal?

Thank you

I think different people have different builds. I am 5'8" a size 12/14 hourglass shape with a little bit too much padding at present but even when much slimmer I was always curvy with boots and hips. That's just my build and I learnt a long time ago that I will never look skinny!

cherrymilkshake · 27/10/2022 20:06

This lady isn't bragging! Anyone who thinks so is showing their green eyes a little.
Being skinny and being fat are very similar, if the person is unhappy. The envy is coming from those who perceive being skinny as much better, maybe to some men but most people would agree a woman looks better neither fat or skinny.

OP I wonder if you could gain more weight through both cardio and weight exercises, which would bulk you up a bit but also increase your appetite.

Whitewolf2 · 27/10/2022 20:27

No, I know a fair number of people that height and they are a full range of weights, quite a few are overweight.
I think it’s fairly unusual to find it that difficult to keep weight on. Have you had your hormones/thyroid checked?

Loachworks · 27/10/2022 20:36

No one is this naive and 5'7" isn't lanky. Be careful what you wish for as many 'naturally' slim women struggle with their weight later in life.
I'm 50, 5'4" and weigh 40kg but I know why (I'm ill) and would never assume all women my height share my weight or think it's normal.

PaisleyP · 27/10/2022 21:26

I'm 5ft7 I look sick at 11-12stone. Gaunt and too thin. I lose my bum and my hips and my boobs go down! For me a happy size is around 13 Stone I think 🤔. The NHS bmi thing is forever saying I should be around 11-stone. 😑

orangeisthenewpuce · 27/10/2022 21:35

Lanky? 5ft 7 is a bit taller than average but that's it. I'm an inch smaller than you, and I have long legs and v long arms. I'm 15 stone so fat. You're completely off the mark on this one OP.

Thank you for your answer. Yeah I had some blood tests and they came back normal.

Height has nothing to do with it. I'm 5' 10" and always struggled to keep weight off.
There are skinny people at every height, and overweight ones too.

I guess being taller makes your slimness more obvious. But I would say your slimness is probably genetics not because your taller. I'm 5ft5 and really slim. I don't really like being slim and like you I remember being paranoid that because I was slim it would be hard to conceive. So I got an app to gain weight! I gained half a stone in about 5 months and I honestly had to eat 3000 calories a day! I managed to get to 7 and a half stone. I conceived really quickly. With my second I was back to my usual 7 stone (couldn't be arsed to keep up with trying to eat 3000 calories and was too busy with my 1st) and conceived quickly again. For some people they just are slim and that's their normal/healthy.

I honestly feel your pain! I struggle to be arsed either! My partner is a good cook so he’s helped a lot in feeding me up. I’m glad you conceived easily :)

Hahahahahahahaha

Nope, skinny is not my problem! Size 16-18 here. Hasn’t stopped me miscarrying either (age).

Thank you everyone for your answers.

I am well aware 5 foot 7 is not tall however I can assure you that i do look rather gangly as I’ve been told by people in those words or others. People often think I’m taller than I am, I guess because of this.

Most people in my area are on the smaller size height wise so I don’t have a lot to compare to.

The suggestion about weights is interesting and have had that suggested before.

I'm also 5'7". When I met DH I was 9st2 and a size 8. I had endless comments on how skinny I was, and looking at pictures now it does look on the gaunt side of skinny iyswim. Same as pp, at 10st 5 I look my best (imo), still slim but healthier looking. Working hard to get down to that weight atm though! When I was at my lightest, although I did eat regular meals I was (not consciously) eating lower cal/fat options. Basically I was busy (oh to be young and free again...) and working in schools, so intended to eat the same things most days - weetabix for breakfast, jacket potato and beans/mugshot type instant pasta and an apple, and whatever mum had made for tea (usually something healthy like veg casserole). I didn't snack as was too busy, so the only extra calories came from booze on nights out. So I would have insisted I ate loads, but I eat a damn sight more these days, and have the belly and bum to show for it 🤣

Do you walk around blindfolded?

Tiredmum100 · 27/10/2022 22:55

I'm 5 ft 8. And fat.

titchy · 27/10/2022 22:56

Yes. 5ft 7 people are usually skinny. 5ft 6 and 5ft 8 though - all fat.

FlowerArranger · 27/10/2022 23:39

The suggestion about weights is interesting and have had that suggested before.

If you are serious about starting to work out with weights/dumbbells, have a look at Caroline Girvan on YouTube.

If you're not ready for CG - she's definitely for intermediates and advanced rather than total beginners - try Growingannanas. She does HIIT with and without dumbbells.

Both are excellent online trainers who know their stuff, and their workouts are very professional.

A new take on the teeny tiny threads. Exciting.

Whathefisgoingon · 28/10/2022 15:48

Absolutely not.

I’m 5’7 and struggled to keep weight off my entire life. I’m currently 11.4 stone but look my best at 10 stone which is almost impossible to stay at without a highly restrictive diet.

Mosik · 28/10/2022 16:38

It's not particularly tall but perhaps you have long legs and a shorter body?.
IME very skinny people are like you and not overly interested in food.
I doubt it has the slightest connection to miscarriage as the body ensures nutrients go to the baby first.
I lost a lot of weight during pregnancy due to hyperemesis. medics assured me the baby would not be affected and they were right. My baby was a healthy 8lb12.

pigalow27 · 28/10/2022 16:56

My DD is like this. She's the exact same height and is about 8 stone 7 or 8. She is very small chested and is also all long arms and legs. When she was 13 she looked like a baby giraffe! It is a definite body type. Perfectly healthy though.

hosyyy · 28/10/2022 17:10

I'm 5'8 and 10.3 stone just now. Other people think I'm slim but I feel really hammy. I was 9 stone a few years ago and was constantly told I looked anorexic. It's incredible the difference an extra stone makes. It's all sitting on my thighs and mid area.
