Toenail fungus

Any chance any one has any idea what the best treatment is for toenail fungus? I used the Scholl stuff for 6 months. Got worse. My GP prescribed Terbinofine cream.... used for 2 months - nothing happening. I've now got Amarolfine lacquer from GP. Will this work? It's bloody horrible having this on my toe.

See a podiatrist. Soak your feet daily in Epsom salt bath. Dry thoroughly, then blast toes with the hair dryer.
tbh while this may help it might not move it forward too much. Sometimes the mail needs to be removed or filed down to get the fungus out and let the treatment work.
you also need to treat your shoes and socks

My dh ended up taking terbinafine tablets to get rid of his. Had to have blood tests during treatment as its can be hard on the liver I think

MotherOfCrocodiles · 10/10/2022 19:26

There was a thread on here a while ago

Consensus was to remove as much of the bad nail as you can with scissors and file down the surface of the remaining thickened bit. Then anti fungal treatment (cream/nail varnish/ athletes foot spray) every day. Keep removing as much as you can and treating.

Worked for me

If you find anything that works let me know! I've had mine for 30 years and nothing has shifted it. I've had Terbinafine tablets twice for 6 months each time. Liver functions checked and all OK. But as soon as I stopped taking it the bloody thing came back. Topical applications (OTC & prescribed) onto the toenail did nothing whatsoever.

MeridasMum · 10/10/2022 19:29

I use a canesten treatment which removes the nail in a couple of weeks, then an anti fungal like Lamisil on the nail bed.

It works but mine always comes back eventually. I'm looking for tips to keep it away!

picklemewalnuts · 10/10/2022 19:33

Has anyone tried a low carb diet? I've read that sugars in the diet make yeast and fungal type things worse.

NewNameNeededNow · 10/10/2022 19:38

Two months isn’t much time tbh. It has to grow completely out and the whole of the infected nail be cut off before it goes or it just keeps reinfecting the new growth.

I’ve had terbinafine in the past which did work. I’ve been applying cream to one nail now daily for about 6 months and it’s still not completely grown out, there’s just a bit left at the end. Toenails can grow quite slow.

ajandjjmum · 10/10/2022 20:22

Terbinafine tablets is the only thing that worked for me.

sparkypupp · 10/10/2022 20:25

Tea tree oil 👍🏻

Cucumberbund · 10/10/2022 20:30

Hydrogen peroxide or tea tree oil rubbed on the nail.

LookdeepintotheParka · 10/10/2022 20:31

Vicks keeps mine at bay although as a pp says it's very hard to get rid of completely.

JerkintheMerkin · 10/10/2022 20:32

Vicks got rid of mine strangely enough but you have to be diligent. Cut the toenail down as far as you can and apply twice daily, wrapping toe in gauze. The spores can stay in your shoes as well. I bought a uv shoe steriliser as I was determined to get rid it it.

pandora206 · 10/10/2022 20:32

Tea tree oil works really well but it takes time for the nail to grow out

PorcupinePie · 10/10/2022 20:32

Anyone know if you can take terbinafine tablets whilst pregnant / breastfeeding?

Oblomov22 · 10/10/2022 20:37

My GP prescribed a tablet and a paint on nail treatment.

My DH saw a podiatrist just last week. She gave him Terbinofine cream, cut the sides of his toenails a LOT and told him to get a course of oral antifungals from his GP, which he has collected today. She also told him to spray antifungal spray in his shoes daily, wash his socks on a boil wash and keep using the cream 3x weekly even if it looks to have cleared up. She said this fungus almost never goes away permanently, but using the cream and visiting her every 6 months will help keep it at bay.

@JerkintheMerkin "I bought a uv shoe steriliser as I was determined to get rid it it"...tell me more!!! My mind is already blown!

I've had fungal toenails for bloody years and it's unbelievably irritating. I react to tea tree oil usually so am a bit reluctant to try that but I've been using Vicks and I think it might be helping. Lamisil Spray has been effective on and off over the years too, but not consistently.

abbey44 · 10/10/2022 20:42

My chiropodist told me to rub Vicks Vaporub (the stuff you put on when you have a cold/blocked nose) into my toes to prevent fungal patches. I was sceptical, but I do what she says and I don’t have a problem (mind you, I didn’t really have one to begin with, so feel free to take it with a pinch of salt). It does make your feet smell nice though!

Terbinafine tablets is the only thing that worked for me.

Terbinafine (for as long as 2 years) or laser treatment are the only things that work on really stubborn toenail fungus

I suffered with mine for 10 years, including black toenail 😳 and my nail actually coming right off

What worked for me (apart from several courses of terbinafine) was the pandemic! I used to wear tights & either heels or boots - 5 days a week and at least 12 hours

During lockdown and all of 2020 & 2021 I was WFH so wearing socks & trainers or flip flops as much as possible (remember the warm Spring of 2020). My feet cleared up which and have been in good condition since

So, I’d say longer with the terbinafine, and as much air as humanly possible on your toes. If you wear socks then changing a couple of times a day will help: I usually wear flip flops for at least an hour after my morning shower OR blast my feet with a hairdryer if I need to get shoes on sooner than that. I think both tights & ‘dress shoes’ contributed to the problem for me as it’s a sweaty environment

If you can, buy new slippers & 1 new pair of ‘daily wear’ shoes : spores live in shoes although I have not thrown my old shoes out they had nearly 2 years to dry …

BeanStew22 · 10/10/2022 20:46

Also: agree with what others say about cutting off the infected nail as otherwise it creates re infection

My miracle cure happened after my gross toenail became so infected it fell right off : there was a baby toenail growing in the stub but I had to wear a plaster on my toe for a month or so/that’s probably why I was wearing flip flops all the time

JerkintheMerkin · 10/10/2022 20:52

@Laquila yes it's called Sterishoe. Expensive but worth it.

JerkintheMerkin · 10/10/2022 20:55

@Laquila it took about a year for my toenail to come back but it grew in beautifully.

I doubt it would be safe. It can be hard to get it prescribed even if not pregnant/breastfeeding
