Toenail fungus

Any chance any one has any idea what the best treatment is for toenail fungus? I used the Scholl stuff for 6 months. Got worse. My GP prescribed Terbinofine cream.... used for 2 months - nothing happening. I've now got Amarolfine lacquer from GP. Will this work? It's bloody horrible having this on my toe.

Tea tree oil apply morning and night and keep applying until nail grows out. Really saturate your nail.

Has anyone tried a low carb diet? I've read that sugars in the diet make yeast and fungal type things worse.

I was actually going to mention diet as it worked for me.
I had fungal infection in both big toes for years, and absolutely nothing would get rid of it. It was a combination treatment of cutting nails every couple of days to try and keep cutting it away and the nailner paint on varnish every morning.
I had tried these things before but a reduction in carbs as well really made a big difference and it's no longer on either toe and my skin in general is much better.

Vicks or karvol works for me.

At the start of the summer two of my nails just came apart half way down with the fungus, now they are all perky and clear. I don't wrap them, just rub it in after I've had a bath once a day.

I'm using a mix of things to give it a good chance of going.

Scholl
Nonyx
Purely Northwest tea tree oil.

All seem to have good genuine reviews. It's been about 3 weeks. I'm.giving it a few months. Think I can see a tiny difference but its prob in.mind and mine is fairly mild I believe. 2 big toes only.

Nailer is slowly working for me, Curanail didn’t.

However this thread is making me worry about my woolly socks, which I’ve just broken out again for winter….

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 10/10/2022 21:29

That should say Nailner!

Terbafine tablets for me too. and keeping them as short as possible. Keep trimming and filing and it will eventually grow out. The cream did nothing for me.

Fungi aren’t my specialty (Microbiology), but I’m highly sceptical of any UV light that claims to eradicate fungal spores. Dermatophyte (most common cause of fungal toenails) spores live for upto 12 months in tiny, tiny flakes of human skin. Spores from any microorganisms are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get rid of.

It’s also something I’ve battled with for over a decade, the oral antibiotics made me violently unwell, and it’s now spread to every toe nail.

Laser treatment is an (expensive) option. I was going to have it a couple of years ago, then came lockdown. Not sure now. I don't mind paying £1K if it works but nothing is guaranteed.

I came on here to say this, I've had mine over 20 years and tried EVERYTHING bar the tablets because my gp wasn't keen on my taking them. However, I do notice that when I'm dieting my toenails improve. There's some interesting stuff on youtube (if manky toenails could be called interesting) about the link to sugar addiction.

barbrahunter · 10/10/2022 21:48

I meant to add, I am currently using Canespro with quite good results so far, but it's a long journey to normal toenails I think.

Anyone know if you can take terbinafine tablets whilst pregnant / breastfeeding?

No. It's really quite dangerous and xan affect your liver which is why you have to have liver tests when on it and you can't drink alcohol.

WonderingWanda · 10/10/2022 21:59

I took terbinafine tablets for 6 months which was long enough for my nail to grow out. I think there is also laser treatment or toe nail removal which are options although not on the NHS.

Thanks so much for your advice everyone! I can see that this is going to be a long process. My GP has just prescribed Amarolfine lacquer. I'll use that religiously for as long as it takes. It baffles me as to why we don't have a simpler and faster remedy. I wouldn't want to take the tablets, seem to play havoc with the liver. Thx once again.

Asking for advice. GP very dismissive. Had to instant on varnish and tablets, yet again, for 3rd time. It just won't go.

picklemewalnuts · 27/11/2022 19:03

@Oblomov22 have you done that whole grinding down, business? I've seen numerous videos where you need to remove as much infested toenail as you can. They file from the top, trim from the edges, soak and scrape.

Then put the varnish on. (Or tea tree, or whatever potion you are on).

Have you powdered your socks and shoes? You can reinfect yourself easily if you haven't.

Oblomov22 · 27/11/2022 19:16

Yes I've done the filing.
Not the powdered socks. What should I be using for that?

picklemewalnuts · 27/11/2022 19:25

There used to be just the one brand, Mycota powder. These days it's a bit more varied. I got one in B&M bargains.

Basically the powder keep everything dry and less vulnerable, and the medication kills the spores.

Bornworrier · 20/04/2023 08:30

Just wanted to add this here… I had toenail fungus for 15 years. Treated it with a combo of tea tree oil and Vick’s VapoRub. I have had amazing results - all the over-the-counter meds, creams, liquids failed to get rid of it.

My toenails are now healthy and white and I’m looking forward to a summer without wearing nail polish to hide the previous mess! Hope that helps someone.

barbrahunter · 20/04/2023 08:45

Another addition to this thread, fellow fungus friends! I can't remember if it was this thread or another one but my latest purchase has been an electric nail file for £6.99 from ebay and I have diligently filed across my infected toenail to make it smooth and it has actually helped a bit with the appearance. I disinfected the attachment after use.

Jellylover · 20/04/2023 08:58

my podiatrist recommended Imperial Feet which is working for me, albeit ever so slowly. You roughen up the nail surface with a file then massage in a couple of drops. It makes the nail very soft and it then falls off. The new nail growth looks ok so far, but it’s a very slow process
