Why isn't this thrush going away?

Early this week, I started to get all the symptoms of thrush. I had it many years ago, so was familiar with the symptoms.

I went to the chemist & picked up an oral tablet, which claimed to clear up symptoms within 2 days, but 3 days later there is little improvement.
It is really starting to drag me down now.

Is it time to make an appointment with my GP, or should I give it another couple of days to see if the treatment kicks in?

Anyone else experienced similar?

have you applied any cream too? Your skin will still be dry and sore from the infection esp. if you were itcy, and if you have used soap or bubble bath in the last couple of days.

If you still have symptoms on Monday, see GP, cos if persists against the oral tablet you need a check up.

It really is supposed to be better the next day and gone in two days. If there is no improvement in 3 days, I would wonder about its effectiveness.

If you still have the box, look inside to see if it is anti-fungal AND anti-bacterial. Thrush is normally fungal, so some of these pills don't cover for the possibility that your problems may be some other kind of infection.

I would go direct to gyne in any case, but that is your call.

I haven't applied any cream. I just asked what they had for thrush & they handed me this oral tablet.
When I had it years ago, I applied cream, but guessed it had all changed now, and there was no need for the cream with this tablet.

I am pretty sure I threw the box out.

I buy both when I get it.

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:17

I will go back to chemist tomorrow & ask for some cream. It was around 15 years back that I last had it, so I guessed the treatment had all changed. You had no oral tablets back then, from what I remember!

If there is no improvement on Mon, I will definitely make an appointment to see my GP.

It has been really irritating me today, although maybe not as intense as it was for the first few days.

Your partner needs to be treated at the same time as well.

donnie · 25/01/2008 16:19

get some caneston cream - it will really help!

Idobelieveinfairies · 25/01/2008 16:23

perhaps the tablet just wasn't for you?

I took one a few weeks ago (forgotten the name) and it worked within 24 hrs.

partner needs to be treated otherwise you will get it back.

hope it goes soon.

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:25

Thanks, I will.

I used normal bubble bath last night, which was a bit silly, wasn't it?
I guess that may not have helped matters!

OP posts:
Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:26

The tablet was the chemist's own version.

Natural yoghurt is meant to help too, isn't it?

OP posts:
Idobelieveinfairies · 25/01/2008 16:30

ohh yes, avoid perfumes things!

maybe the chemists just wasn't as good?

The one i got cost around ten pounds and i was but it was worth it.

donnie · 25/01/2008 16:31

nat yoghurt is supposed to be good but i can't be doing with scooping ladels of yeo valley up my fanny tbh! the cream is easier.

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:33

No, I wasn't liking the thought of that either!
Have no natural yoghurt in atm either, only the fruity kind. Somehow I feel raspberry seeds up there won't help matters greatly!!

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:35

£10 is double the price of the one I bought, so maybe this one isn't as effective.

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:40

I have had very fitted trousers on today too, which may not be helping things either.

OP posts:
luciemule · 25/01/2008 16:43

maybe your DP has it and you didn't know before you got reinfected - so he needs to treat it too.

mummyandbaby · 25/01/2008 16:44

Fitted trousers and bubble baths are not sensible with thrush. Try Diflucan which you can buy over the counter. Expensive but very good.

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:52

Thanks, I will look out for that.

We last had sex on Sunday evening, and I noticed symptoms on Monday.

I started a new pill 5 months back, after 5 a 5 year pill break, so not sure if that has contributed in some way.
I do tend to take a lot of baths, and like to use bubble baths, so that could well have triggered it too.

Haven't had sex since taking tablet. Not felt like sex at all since having discomfort down there!

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 16:54

It is a lot less common for men to get it, isn't it?

OP posts:
jalopy · 25/01/2008 16:56

Look carefully at your diet. High sugar foods, alcohol etc will alter the ph of down-below thus the thrush will recur.

Fedrightup · 25/01/2008 17:20

Oh really? I didn't know that.

I have recently bought some of that PH balanced feminine wash, which I guess is ok to use.

discoverlife · 25/01/2008 17:36

It might not be thrush, there are other infections/conditions that can produce itching. Check with your doctor before trying anymore treatments.

Fedrightup · 26/01/2008 16:42

I think I am definitely going to have to make a doctors appointment, as it still hasn't cleared today.
I feel itchy, sore & fed up!
