What is up with DH?!

sendwineandastraw · 15/09/2022 21:25

I posted a few weeks ago about DH feeling rubbish with what we thought was food poisoning. He ended up being really really ill for a full week to the point that I had become quite worried about him, constant diarrhoea, terrible stomach cramps, irritable, sleeping constantly and one minute full on body shakes/can’t keep warm and the next excessive sweating and ate absolutely nothing at all…

Finally after about 8 days he slowly started to get better and we just put it down to a dodgy Chinese.

Tonight (about 10 days after being back to normal) he picked me up from work and said he thought he was starting to feel awful, two toilet pit stops on the way home and back home and back into bed, feeling absolutely awful with the same symptoms. I’ve just been up to check on him and he is actually shaking the bed with how much he is shivering and he said he can’t get comfortable with the cramps.

Could this still be just a really bad bout of food poisoning? It was a gentle process got him to start to eat normally again after the 1st time but he was completely back to nonalcoholic before tonight…

What could it be?

Has he been checked out by a GP. I know someone with similar symptoms who had an obstruction in their bowel.

sendwineandastraw · 15/09/2022 21:33

@GreenLeavesRustling He refused to go last time, said that it would pass (even though after day 6 he was still feeling rubbish) and we thought it did…

Until tonight!

You need to phone for advice if you are concerned.

naomi81 · 15/09/2022 21:36

Sounds like colitis, defo get to doctors, maybe go with him for support if he's worried x

DoubleYolker · 15/09/2022 21:37

It’s still likely to be viral gastroenteritis or food poisoning. He needs to contact the GP to provide a stool sample for testing.

there will be lots of non-medically qualified posters along in a minute to give you dreadful diagnoses and suggest A&E.

if he’s having diarrhoea, his bowel is highly unlikely to be obstructed.

GreenLeavesRustling · 15/09/2022 21:45

I am not medically qualified, but the bowel obstruction (which was not a complete obstruction of the bowel, but was growing), was discovered via a GP referral for a colonoscopy. The tumour did come along with both diarrhoea and excruciating cramps.
So I stand by my recommendation of a GP visit.

vipersnest1 · 15/09/2022 21:47

He needs to talk to a doctor tonight. It's been long enough that a simple stomach bug should have gone by now.
He may have a nasty gut infection or something else going on.
I'd call 111 if I were you. Don't ask him if he wants you to, tell him that's what you are doing because you're worried.

Pixiedust49 · 15/09/2022 21:48

I had this. It was campylobacter. He needs a stool sample to be taken. Never felt so ill.

cestlavielife · 15/09/2022 21:48

He needs to see gp
Test for salmonella,etc

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 15/09/2022 21:53

Just because someone has diahorea doesn't mean their bowel isn't obstructed. This can be over flow with an obstruction high up. It's very common to see presentations of multiple bouts of loose stool and require an enema....

sighs in acute medicine Nurse

SecretDoor · 15/09/2022 21:53

Acute diverticulitis?

tentinginmarch · 15/09/2022 21:55

My ex dh had something similar - awful and it came and went (sometimes a week between feeling awful). He went to the gp after a couple of months one evening after work and had appendicitis. It was removed that night!

sendwineandastraw · 15/09/2022 22:00

So I think i had him convinced to see a doc at the 1st suggestion, colitis, which does seem to be fitting with all the symptoms.

To be a little bit vague ,sure DH would not appreciate me openly discussing his bowel movements online) his docs is attached to his work and I think that what put him off going the 1st time, that and being able to go 20 minutes without shitting himself.

He has said he will ring 1st thing tomorrow morning, thank you everyone.

Classic internet 😂 hope your DH is better soon OP!

Cas112 · 15/09/2022 22:07

Ring 111

ValerieDoonican · 15/09/2022 22:20

Yeah it needs diagnosing by a doc. There are lots of things it could be, and a good number of them won't go away of their own accord. I had giardia once, not quite as ill as your dh, but doctor had no idea what it was untill the lab identified the bug - then all it needed was a week of smanti microbial tablets and i was fine.

If hes not listeting to reason per haps point out to him that if he keeps shitting so frequently he could end up with piles , which bloody hurt, so best get it sorted sooner rather than later

good luck

ValerieDoonican · 15/09/2022 22:20

Secondthe suggestion to call 111. You don't need his permission.

ValerieDoonican · 15/09/2022 22:22

(typing this as currently sat in a&e with my dh, who came off his bike earlier. I didn't ask him, I just told him that's where we were goi g, and here we are..)

sendwineandastraw · 15/09/2022 22:27

I don’t think we are are the point of phoning 111. I’ve asked if he wants to speak to or be seen by anyone tonight and he said no.

If I thought her was being reckless with his health or was in anyway not with it enough to make that decision his self I’d absolutely step in but he’s watching the new GoT and still doesn’t seem or have lost his sense of sarcasm so think he will be fine until the morning…

Obviously if anything was to change I wouldn’t hesitate.

You absolutely do need his permission. 111 won't assess a patient that doesn't want it, so long as they have capacity

ValerieDoonican · 15/09/2022 22:48

Ok sorry my bad

sendwineandastraw · 16/09/2022 08:05

So it is now 8am and DH is now saying that he is just going to call for advice at 9…

Still no change!

naomi81 · 16/09/2022 15:42

Just wanted to say I am not a doctor and my sister has colitis and has similar symptoms to the point she's on the loo all night but sounds like your over half manages to sleep. Try some rehydration drinks too X

HappyHamsters · 16/09/2022 15:45

I hope your poor dh gets better soon

sendwineandastraw · 16/09/2022 18:05

Thank you.

Doc said sounded like an infection which has just not properly cleared up and to suck it up till Tuesday and then come in for a check up and a few tests just to be on the safe side, I gave him the room while he spoke to Doc so not sure how much he played it down but a bit miffed he’s been told to leave it the weekend when it could be some antibiotics could make a difference in 24 hours!

Something that DH had left out until today is there has been some intermittent blood which I know could still be and is likely another symptom of Colitis, however I noticed today that DH’s lips are looking very pale and now wondering if her is anaemic..
