No one told me it would hurt quite that much and it would be in there for 5 years!
feel very fragile today, anyone else had this? done this? felt this?

Oh dear! I was considering it but your post has put me off.

rantinghousewife · 23/01/2008 11:05

Yes the trick is to take a couple of Nurofen about 1/2 hour before you go.

MummyDoIt · 23/01/2008 11:05

Don't be put off, shortcake. I had mine done four years ago and didn't find it much worse than a normal smear. They advise you to take some painkillers beforehand and it's over very quickly. Mine has had the added bonus that it stopped my periods completely so well worth the initial discomfort in my opinion.

chocolatemummy · 23/01/2008 11:09

yes I feel that if it stops my horrendous periods then it will be worth it.
BUt it did hurt, not for long but it definately hurt and I do feel very tender-tummy and back. Also, when they said it would be in there for 5 years, I asked what would happened if I eceided I wanted another baby in a couple of years, they said, you can have it taken out but the Dr wouldnt be very happy as it is a very expensive treatement. It all feels very permanent and intrusive but I am sure I'll feel better in a few days

coincidence - i have just had mine changed this morning, now on my 4th. Do feel a bit fragile and going back to bed with a hot water bottle (lucky me) but as you can see I am a huge fan - no periods now for 14 years! NO PMS, no ruined knickers, no running out of tampax, no 'not tonight dear'. And do I feel less of a woman??? I DO NOT!

If i remember rightly the first few weeks were a bit irritating - had quite a bit of unpredictable spotting but WELL WORTH it! Enjoy!

lazarou · 23/01/2008 11:10

Yeah, I thought about it too, but maybe not now.

lazarou · 23/01/2008 11:12

Does it really stop PMS?

rantinghousewife · 23/01/2008 11:13

Another one here who's on it to stop the floodings and it really does work (well it has for me).

lazarou · 23/01/2008 11:13

Doe it make you put on weight?

chocolatemummy · 23/01/2008 11:14

missingtheaction well thats a good post, I think I was just suprised it was in for so long and it felt like having a 'Scrape' which I had when I went overdue and it hurt!
except I haven't got the excitment of a baby coming v soon this time

OP posts:
missingtheaction · 23/01/2008 11:14

also, if you do want another baby then just say so and have it whipped out (in my experience much less 'discomfort' than having it put in). Tough on them - they should have asked you if you were planning more babies, and if you are having it for dismenhorrea (sorry spelling?) then it's a medical treatment not contraception so tough on their budgets. They are expensive vs other coils but not necessarily more expensive than other hormonal treatments.

The discomfort is over in seconds - i have had far more ouchy injections in my Bum! A very small price to pay for 5 years without period pain, pms, heavy bleeding, anemia.

chocolatemummy · 23/01/2008 11:14

lazarou----snap questions?????

OP posts:
rantinghousewife · 23/01/2008 11:15

I do still get very mild PMS but nothing like as bad as it was, although my boobs get a bit sensitive about once a month.
I no longer get the huge migraines that were a frequent part of the whole monthly nightmare.

rantinghousewife · 23/01/2008 11:15

No, no weight gain either.

lazarou · 23/01/2008 11:16

I had the implant in my arm a few years ago. That was really good, except she had problems getting it out.

missingtheaction · 23/01/2008 11:16

no PMS for me BUT I was never a serious sufferer vs what i read from other posts so it might not make a big difference if your cycle makes you really moody

chocolatemummy · 23/01/2008 11:17

I had it fitted for menorrhagia exceptionally heavy periods to the point of me fainting a couple of times and bleeding through several layers so if it does stop that then I will be so happy.
i am not sure if I want any more children but I only have one, she has just turned 4.
I am 33 now so in five years I will be 38 and if I did have another I would want to try before then definately

can't remember about weight but I am pretty skinny (BMI about 20)) so clearly not had a negative effect long term!

rantinghousewife · 23/01/2008 11:20

I had spotting for the first 6 months but it was very light (previously I'd been having 6 week long heavy bleeds) and then after that, nothing, nada, zilch.

Magdelanian · 23/01/2008 11:23

No weight gain. Hurt like hell to have it put in but the pain went after a couple of days. Bled for about 3 weeks afterwards. Then it was great. Very light periods and no side effects.

chocolatemummy · 23/01/2008 11:26

okay, feel better now because to be honest, I think it hurt like hell too! and I am bleeding but not much at all. but generally you all seem to be very happy with the results!

OP posts:
mejon · 23/01/2008 11:36

I had mine fitted at the beginning of December and it didn't really hurt at all, more of an uncomfortable sensation than anything else. It hurt more having the speculum removed and that is the only time I thought 'ow'. I had no bleed for around 3 weeks then one lasting nearly 2 weeks and I've been off and on since. Having the 6 week check-up tomorrow.

I'm a bit at you being told that your GP wouldn't be happy if you wanted it out before 5 years. Cheeky beggars!

justwaterformethanks · 23/01/2008 13:03

Mine didnt hurt at all ,but i have been told that i have a very co-operative cervix, which is bloody typical only bit of my body thats nice and i cant even show it to people

Highlander · 23/01/2008 14:50

OMG, dreading the visit now. Going to see about one next week. I suspect it will hurt like hell as I've 2 elective CSs. Not having the mirena though, too much progesterone....

lazarou · 23/01/2008 14:56

Highlander, have the arm implant instead
