No one told me it would hurt quite that much and it would be in there for 5 years!
feel very fragile today, anyone else had this? done this? felt this?

Yes the arm implant is great - I've had mine in for 4 months, and haven't had any bleeding at all. That said, I was on progesterone only pill for 6 months previously to see if it suited me.

I am really pleased with it, and it didn't hurt having it put in. My arm got very bruised looking though and stayed like that for at least 2 weeks.

I was keen to have the Mirena but then realised about insertion and thought that over the years I'd had enough of medical people telling me various reproduction-related procedures wouldn't hurt..

expatinscotland · 23/01/2008 20:12

'I'd had enough of medical people telling me various reproduction-related procedures wouldn't hurt.. '

Yeah, it doesn't hurt them (the people doing it) at all!

ItsNeverTooEarlyForPopcorn · 23/01/2008 20:17

Oo-er - I'm to have one fitted soon.

I suppose it's like childbirth, it hurts some more than others and some people have had more than one (though not at the same time).

It can't be that bad...can it?

Minum · 23/01/2008 20:34

It hurt a bit (I've had 3 inserted now), but so so worth it for negligible periods, worry-free sex, and not having to see a doctor again for 5 years I cant stand the hassle of making and keeping Drs appointments.

cheshirekitty · 23/01/2008 21:01

Mirena coil has reduced the number of hysterectomys for excessive periods by 90%

For the next few weeks (2) you need to take ibuprofen and paracetamol (if you are ok taking these and are not asthmatic). It can take up to 6 months for you to see any real benefit, but once they start working they are magic.

As for getting it out before the 5 years, it is your body and your choice. A coil is only £150, so in my opinion it is a really cost effective form of treatment.

Hope the pain gets better.

expatinscotland · 23/01/2008 21:03

When they were trying to get me to have one - I said no becuase progesten doesn't agree with me and I don't agree w/how the copper coil works - the University of Edinburgh was drug trailing a medication to control all the breakthrough bleeding that some women get w/the coil.

Don't know what happened with it, though.

rantinghousewife · 23/01/2008 21:05

Has it really? Blimey that's a really good percentage then. Must be saving them a fortune in that case, when you consider that 10 years ago, they would have whipped out your womb.

iMum · 23/01/2008 21:07

HOw does it work tho? exactly how does it stop you getting preggers. We are planning our next baby atm and after that need to seriously think about long term contraception-i had always discounted the coil but after reading this?....

CaptainCod · 23/01/2008 21:09

YOU GET NO PERIOUDS

its fab

expatinscotland · 23/01/2008 21:10

some people get nothing but a period!

nutcracker · 23/01/2008 21:11

Oh god, it's put me off too. I was considering it until I read this.

Thing is, it doesn't stop everyones periods does it ??

CaptainCod · 23/01/2008 21:11

mine hurt for about an hour

then it was fine
spotting lasted for a few weeks then nowt
had it changed last year and that was better too

expatinscotland · 23/01/2008 21:12

it does some people, but there's a thread on here nearly 1000 posts long of people who've had mostly nothing but trouble, including getting someone to take it out when it doesn't work for them.

expatinscotland · 23/01/2008 21:12

sorry for triple post

nutcracker · 23/01/2008 21:18

I am considering the injection again, even though i swore i'd never ever have it agin.

nutcracker · 23/01/2008 21:30

Do you have to be on your period when it is fitted, or did i dream that ?

expatinscotland · 23/01/2008 21:31

it's not entirely necessary, but if you can they like to do it at the tail end of your period.

nutcracker · 23/01/2008 21:33

Think that counts me out then cos i cannot breath without being in agony whilst i am on my period.

bigwombat · 23/01/2008 21:48

I've had a Mirena for about 6 months, no periods for several months now, brilliant. I still get PMT a bit, but it's only for a day or so and much less bad than before (on the whole). It was uncomfortable having it put in - but all over within a few minutes.

CaptainCod · 23/01/2008 23:04

ah crapt hey make it up

Highlander · 24/01/2008 10:54

I'm just not having any extra hormones in me, ta very much. So no Mirena, no injections etc.

So do you still get pregnant with a coil, but the unterine wall is unfavourable for implantation? Hmm, does that make ectopics more likely? SDuppose you could just not shag for 3 days/motnh

expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 12:51

'So do you still get pregnant with a coil, but the unterine wall is unfavourable for implantation?'

With the non-hormonal coil, yes.

It does make ectopics more likely, including the Mirena, as a couple of MNers found out the hard way.

I don't think people who've had bad reactions to the Mirena are 'making it up', FWIW, cod.

Some people cannot take progesten-based contraception, it really messes them up. No matter how small the level of hormone, it is still synthetic hormone in the body, and for some that has a negative effect.

bigwombat · 24/01/2008 16:23

Yeah, I was really really wary of having it due to all the horror stories, but was persuaded at last minute by gynae. I was expecting terrible mood swings and all sorts, but have been pleasantly surprised...
