I have needed a crown for two years on a broken tooth. I have been saving like mad but not got enough yet.
This last week I have nerve pain and throbbing and it is getting unbearable.
Does any pain relief help?

Oragel. You probably need a dentist though infections can turn nasty.

custardbear · 05/09/2022 18:17

Oh god if it's an abscess get on antibiotics asap - does your gum under your tooth feel spongy when you bite on that tooth?

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/09/2022 18:19

I don't really bite on that tooth due to it being broken..
I had a check up booked for next week I have brought it forward to Wednesday.

Co-codamol alternated with Ibuprofen is what my dentist recommended when I was waiting for antibiotics to work. That way I could take something every 2 hours.

Hope it helps you and you get it sorted soon, nothing worse than dental pain.

Chew on whole cloves to numb the pain while you wait to see the dentist! Sounds nuts but I needed a crown when in Sri Lanka and they told me to do this and it works!!! Couldn't feel a thing as the whole area where my tooth had been hurting went numb! Temporary solution but works really well!

almay8830 · 05/09/2022 20:04

Alongside medication of course!

Bs0u416d · 05/09/2022 20:06

Co-codamol isn't actually particularly effective against dental pain and may not makey you feel particulary good. Ibuprofen is, particularly a higher dose in the short term, you can layer this with paracetamol quite safely. Depending how inflammed the nerve is, you might find that a cold compress or/cold liquid in the respite though it sounds like you might well require extraction or root-canal treatment to resolve the problem and present in infection developing.

connie26 · 05/09/2022 20:06

A pair of extraction forceps

MassiveSalad22 · 05/09/2022 20:07

Clove oil is a godsend for instant pain relief to the source (rather than ingesting etc) but obviously drugs too.

Danikm151 · 05/09/2022 20:17

Anbesol helps to numb the area

ditalini · 05/09/2022 20:17

Yes, don't discount cloves as a topical pain reliever. Either clove oil or whole clove softened in your mouth and chewed slightly then tucked between your cheek and affected gum.

Absolutely this!!!!

My mum used to really suffer with toothache and abscesses, she was always using clove oil, bloody stinks but it works

Thestoppedfan · 05/09/2022 22:54

The worst pain of my life was when I had dry socket. I used cocodemol and ibuprofen which helped a bit but I also found using straight vodka as a mouthwash and tilting my mouth so it stayed on it for 60 seconds or so completely numbed the area and gave me a bit of temporary relief.

allboysherebutme · 05/09/2022 22:55

Oragel clove oil. X

Underscore21 · 05/09/2022 22:56

You'll need an extraction or the pulp extirpating if the tooth is salvageable when you go tomorrow. A crown prep isn't going to alleviate what sounds like irreversible pulpits or apical periodontitis.Good luck. Alternate paracetamol with ibuprofen tonight, head propped up tonight on an extra pillow and a cold compress on that side of the face.

FlyingMasticatedParticles · 05/09/2022 23:01

Paramol - you can buy it over the counter at boots. It worked for me when I was having to go for multiple appointments for my root canal - the pain in between was unreal

fantasmasgoria1 · 05/09/2022 23:10

Cocodamol is good for dental pain . Something like orajel doesn't last very long whereas cocodamol etc lasts longer within your body.

startingagain17 · 05/09/2022 23:13

the throat spray numbs painful teeth. it’s amazing

startingagain17 · 05/09/2022 23:13

you can buy it everywhere too

coldandverytired · 05/09/2022 23:15

paramol, orgel and heavy duty ibuprofen. You have my sympathies. emergency dental appointment to check for infection.Sleeping propped up might help (but appreciate you probably think you'll never sleep again at this point if you're in pain- cold compress, all the drugs and some water to gently swill)

KilmordenCastle · 05/09/2022 23:25

Cocodamol, ibuprofen and oragel gave me some relief when I had killer toothache recently. I had exactly the same problem, a broken tooth that I had left too long because I couldn't afford dental treatment. Hopefully you'll get antibiotics, they take a while to kick in so you will need pain relief for a few more days. But once the antibiotics work it is magical 😂

I ended up having to have the tooth out, the dentist wanted to try to save it but it was just too decayed unfortunately.

addictedtotheflats · 05/09/2022 23:33

Probably diclofenac or naproxen.
