I have needed a crown for two years on a broken tooth. I have been saving like mad but not got enough yet.
This last week I have nerve pain and throbbing and it is getting unbearable.
Does any pain relief help?

How did you get on OP? Hope all is good

Sunshineandrainbow · 06/09/2022 21:35

Well I got there at appointment time and was told appt is tomorrow.
I really couldn't face challenging it. As I walked out I got a text with tomorrow appt on so something doesn't seem right. And I have a text with today's appt on. And now I will be paying for an emergency appt when I already had a standard appt booked for tomorrow which I could have just attended.

Thanks for asking though. I have managed with the pain relief tips on this thread.

I was once advised by a dentist to make a paste with soluble aspirin and put it on the gum to be absorbed directly. It did help.

Erm, and if you are that way inclined, a spliff.

Don't do this. It will cause a burn.

If it ever happens again do ask if your dentist has a payment plan in place (which will allow you to spread the cost of treatment out over a set period of time so you don't have to wait while you save). Good luck with it all.

Back from appt, tooth needs a root canal filling - £800 plus a crown £650
Or an extraction £350

Once I am over the shock I will decide what to do. Over a thousand pound seems an awful lot of money for one tooth but the extraction scares the hell out of me.

What have they done about your present pain OP?

shinynewapple22 · 07/09/2022 10:26

Why does the extraction scare you ? Because you think it will be painful - or the impact of having a permanent gap in your mouth ?

There is a small risk with extraction of dry socket which I understand is very painful . But otherwise a straight forward extraction with pain relief is very simple, you can feel a bit of pushing / pulling but no pain . It can be uncomfortable the following day (achy) when the injection wears off - but otherwise it should be fine . You do have the issue of dealing with the gap though .

I am cringing at the price of your dental treatment - assuming you have no NHS dentist in your area .

Also in regard to the root canal v extraction consideration - I once had a root canal and still had to have an extraction a couple of years later - an issue for me only in time and pain - but at the prices you are quoting you might want to add that in to your consideration.

There would also be the cost of whatever you decide to do regarding the gap in your mouth . If it's near the back no-one will see but it can have an impact on your other teeth .

I used to have an NHS dentist but I didn't find them particularly good, during covid I didn't have check up so was struck off.
I am not sure if the root canal filling is same as root canal treatment as the price seems really high.
I have had one extraction before and the fear was 100 times worse than the procedure. This tooth I am worried about as it is broken and basically being held together with a large filing so I am worried they won't bee able to get a good grip on it.
