Hello, my son is 5. This evening at tea time he said he could not eat because his throat is hurting so before bed I gave him calpol, he's not settled really all night he keeps on crying every few minutes, hes burning up I don't have a thermometer to check his temperature but he's definatley hot to touch, even with the fan on his back and tummy are warm. I thought his heart seemed to be racing so I did a pulse check and it was 122 BPM, does that sound worrying? I don't have a clue what his heart rate should be and Google gives various answers, any advice much appreciated thank you

Sorry title is misleading his temperature isn't 122 his sleeping pulse is. His skin feels hot to touch

A child's heart rate is faster then adults but 122 is still on the high side. Can he have some more Calpol? If you're worried then call 111.

Fraaahnces · 31/08/2022 01:42

You can give ibuprofen as well as Calpol. (Just make sure you don’t overdose on either. You’re probably exhausted, so write down how much you’ve given of each and what time.) I would take all the sheets, pajama top, etc off him and try a cool compress on the back of his neck and on his forehead. Even sponging him down with cool water, or a lukewarm bath. See if you can bring his temp down a bit. I know you don’t want to drag the poor kid out to A&E, but they tend to take things seriously with little ones.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/08/2022 01:43

122 is ok if he has a high temperature.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/08/2022 01:43

Only just above normal parameters for a five year old.

BrokenRainbow22 · 31/08/2022 02:14

I am absolutely drained, he had calpol half an hour ago and I've had the fan on him for the same amount of time. He's still not settling at all, the pain is in his mouth he said no where else. No tummy, back or head pain just his mouth and throat. I keep trying to get him to have a small sip of water or milk but he won't. I dont have any childrens ibuprofen, he still feels warm. Its going to be a very long night, he will sleep for a few minutes then its like he panics starts breathing heavy almost like hes panting and then crying, I give him a gentle pat and he's back to sleep and the cycle starts again.

Please do not sponge him down
This sends the body into shock

WtoB · 31/08/2022 02:23

I imagine he is waking panicking because he cant catch his breath due to a throat infection / tonsils maybe swollen?
Can you have a look next time he is awake?

BrokenRainbow22 · 31/08/2022 02:25

@WtoB no I dont think he would appreciate that anyway, his sister did give him a cold compress on his forehead this evening and he wasn't very happy about that. I have removed all covers, opened the window and put the fan on to try and cool him down a little bit

BrokenRainbow22 · 31/08/2022 02:39

He's not cooling down if anything he feels warmer, I don't know what to do I have another child who's 7 I really don't want to have to get her out of bed to go to A+E at this time in the morning if I don't have to. The NHS is stretched enough when it could just be a bug he's picked up

If he's that uncomfortable/in that much pain from his mouth and/or throat that he's constantly waking, with a fever, I would definitely give 111 a call. Nothing to lose and hopefully they can rule out anything more serious and give you advice as to what to do. Really hope he's feeling better soon Flowers

WtoB · 31/08/2022 02:41

Ring 111
They may ask you questions and depending on your answers, May require a a&e visit

BrokenRainbow22 · 31/08/2022 02:44

Thank you I will give them a ring now and see what they advise. He's absolutley exhausted too bless him but still waking every few minutes crying in pain.

If you're lucky you might be able to get an out of hours GP appointment - our OOO runs all night. Still not ideal but avoids however many hours in a and a.

Valhalla17 · 31/08/2022 02:45

Give 111 a call. Ultimately his body and the fever is doing what it needs to do, but give them a call to be safe and get some peace of mind. Hope he feels better soon, I've had many a night like this so can understand.

Nat6999 · 31/08/2022 03:00

Can you give him some ice to suck or an ice lolly? It sounds like he has tonsillitis, my brother used to suffer like your ds & my mum gave him frozen stuff & jelly to soothe the pain. Keep up with the calpol & get some Ibuprofen as well. Don't have the fan blowing directly on him as this will dry up his throat & make it more painfull.

BrokenRainbow22 · 31/08/2022 03:04

Arghhh I've got to wait for a call back in the next 2 hours from a doctor!!! I am absolutely exhausted and so is he.
He won't drink or eat anything at all he says he can't as it hurts, he's not awake long enough to really give him an ice lolly honestly he's awake for about 1 minute just crying and then back asleep for around 3-4 minutes 😴

OP high temps in the absence of other worrying symptoms are not dangerous in and of themselves, unless they are VERY high. Make him comfortable, but yourself a thermometer in the morning but certainly nothing you’ve written sounds like you should go anywhere.

BrokenRainbow22 · 31/08/2022 03:29

I am getting really concerned now I'm not sure if he is just dreaming or hallucinating (probably a little OTT)
For the last 15 minutes of him keep waking up he is talking in between crying so he has said their are too many things, when I said what things he said people too many people here I said their is only us two in Mommy's bed and he went back off to sleep. Now he's just said they kicked me in the belly, nobody is here my daughter is asleep in her own bed. Its like he thinks other people are here maybe he's dreaming and I'm just so tired my mind is working over drive. Just seems very odd its never happened before (the talking and almost panicking)

@Happyhappyday thank you, hoping I can try get him settled for an hour or two at least and get him to the GP tomorrow if he's still in pain. That is of course unless the doctor calls back and asks for him to go to A&E

ShedHead7 · 31/08/2022 03:42

They call it "fever dreams", high temps can cause hallucinations and crazy dreams. Have you rang your GP phone number? Give that a try because most of them redirect straight through to your local out of hours GP service.

ittakes2 · 31/08/2022 04:09

Have you looked in his throat? Tonsillitis can cause swelling on the tonsils to the point of effecting breathing - especially since you say he is panting. I am surprised 111 did not ask you to do this (or sorry maybe they did and he was ok).

Msloverlover · 31/08/2022 04:26

My daughter goes on for really high scary temperatures at night when she is ill. Also horrible fever dreams and hallucinations. Quite often by morning she is fine as the fever has done it’s job. It’s not fun but it is pretty impressive how the body works!

Msloverlover · 31/08/2022 04:27

Also panting and high pulse. I can literally see her veins in her neck pumping away.

Joshanddonna · 31/08/2022 04:34

Sounds like tonsillitis. My kids never responded to calpol only ibuprofen. I hope you all get some sleep x
