Cost of private hysterectomy??

Hi all, anyone had a private abdominal hysterectomy in England (I’m Midlands) and be willing to divulge what you paid? Just been told I’m not getting my op this year after all, and I’ve already been waiting a while… Wondering if it’s worth me finding ou mt private cost. Fear it’ll just be way out of reach tho, and a little worried about safety if anything goes wrong… Any info gratefully received!

When I was waiting for over 12 months for my hysterectomy I googled the hospitals in desperation.
It was around £7,000 😕

@WTHamIreading thank you! I think I’m just going to have to wait for the NHS to get to me. I’d prefer to be in the big hospital anyway I think.

My mother in law paid just short of 7k last year through BMI

hope your ok 🌺

Lula74 · 02/09/2022 07:20

@SalesMum thank you! I’m ok for now, just anxious because I can’t take norethisterone that long. But I don’t think private is doable at those prices, so I shall just have to wait.

Private hospitals usually have payment plans, so you could investigate that.

Lula74 · 02/09/2022 08:07

@sorrynotathome oh I’ll have a look, thank you! Wonder if that would make it doable.

Google Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital (midlands) they have price list on the website. I think it's about £7000 if I remember well.

AmandaHoldensLips · 02/09/2022 08:29

I had to go privately, with no insurance, and got a package deal. If you are not insured you can get a special deal which will include everything, including any unforeseen extras in case of complications.

I had been dismissed for years with endometriosis and all the usual fobbing off us women get.

I went to a London-based specialist so the price was higher than I would have paid regionally. It was around 6 grand.

broccolibush · 02/09/2022 08:36

I did the same as @AmandaHoldensLips in getting a package deal - I think it was through Bupa and they insured me for any possible complications from the operation and offered me a choice of hospitals. It ended up just shy of £6.5k about 5 years ago.

AmandaHoldensLips · 02/09/2022 08:41

I think we are all so used to the idea of healthcare being "free" that a lot of us find it hard to get our head around paying.

I also had to pay for one of my kids to have an op when she was put on a waiting list of over 18 months.

I would rather not spend money on holidays/cars/etc and eat baked beans for a year than risk my family's health in the NHS lottery.

emmathedilemma · 02/09/2022 09:28

I used private medical cover a couple of years ago for gynae procedures, didn't end up having a hysterectomy but from what those treatments and investigations cost I would have estimated £7-10k.
There's sometimes indicative costs on their websites, or give them a ring, the reception staff are usually lovely unlike the dragons you get in the NHS. They may also offer finance options or consider a 0% finance credit card deal if you'd be able to pay it off before the interest kicked in.

Lula74 · 02/09/2022 09:57

Oh wow thank you all! Some great advice to go and research.

What do folks think about safety? I have huge fibroids and really bad bleeding, I’ve needed blood transfusions in the past. What if I bleed during surgery, will a little private hospital have access to masses of type specific blood (I’m quite a rare group), crash teams etc? That’s the other worry with private. I’d rather be in the big hospital in case something goes wrong…

I’m also not seeing the prices you guys are finding. “Guide price” at my local Nuffield is £9k and is well over 8 at Warwickshire, @lemongirl1985 . Are prices going up because more women are going private, maybe?

emmathedilemma · 02/09/2022 10:14

I'm not sure about blood, these are the questions you could ring and ask them! Most (all?) private hospitals don't have intensive / critical care type facilities.

Tollystar · 02/09/2022 10:49

Might be worth seeing if your NHS hospital does private work (re. your worry about blood supplies etc). Mine in the SE does. It's unlikely to be any cheaper than local private hospitals, but the operation is in the usual hospital theatres (so the same back up/emergency cover etc), and you recover in a private ward. Plus the money you pay goes into funding the hospital.

Lula74 · 02/09/2022 12:11

Ooh @Tollystar that’s a good idea. I might have a dig online. I know it sounds silly, but I haven’t asked at the hosp in case they think “we can leave her at the bottom of the list and she’ll eventually go private” - daft, I know! 🤣

Hi I’ve been looking into going private for a total laparoscopic hysterectomy, I have Fibroids, endometriosis and adenomyosis which causes terrible pain and really heavy bleeding/flooding.
I’m currently on the NHS waiting list but have no idea how long i’m going to have to wait. I’m currently on Prostrap injections in preparation for surgery but still bleeding.
I saw a private consultant at the Princess Grace Hospital and was quoted £21.500.00 there’s no way I could afford that!! I was expecting somewhere around the £10.000 mark, just booked a new consultation with Nuffields at St Bart’s and hope that it’s a more affordable option..the whole thing is a nightmare.

Lula74 · 13/10/2022 00:04

@Janjingles holy moly, over £20k??? Jeez. Yeah that’s just way way out of budget for just about anyone I’d think. I’ve heard private is going up because it demand. It’s £10k ish here now. I hope you have more luck in your search! I’m still waiting, and still on Prostap and also norethisterone because the Prostap doesn’t stop the bleeding… it’s all a bit s**t, isn’t it? Xx

OP posts:
Janjingles · 13/10/2022 08:27

@Lula74 Yes I agree It totally s**t to be in this situation and that women have to go through this and then be put into the position of having to find the money to go private.
Can I ask how long have you been on Prostrap? I was told the bleeding was highly likely to stop but it hasn’t!! They haven’t mentioned taking Norethisterone alongside it although I have had it before but without the Prostap.X

Lula74 · 13/10/2022 08:30

@Janjingles I've been on both since mid June. The norethisterone was only supposed to be temporary to stop the bleeding while the Prostap had time to work, but every time I try to stop it I bleed horrifically again and they put me back on it. Last time I tried reducing and bled badly on 2 tabs/day so I don't think I am getting off it. Hoping surgery comes soon, for both of us! Just living in limbo...

OP posts:
Lula74 · 13/10/2022 08:33

I can't believe you have the big three, bless you. I only have fibroids (large) so although I've had dreadful bleeding, I haven't had a huge amount of pain. I just want to get rid of the lot now as I don't feel safe. I had to have masses of fluids, two units of blood and two iron infusions in June, bled so badly I collapsed. So I live in fear of it happening again...

OP posts:
confused162 · 13/10/2022 08:37

@Lula74 family members have had treatment privately and the best private surgeons tend to be ones the NHS use anyway. The consultant that operated on a friend at The Royal Marsden was actually the one who would have done her NHS op, she just didn't have to wait two years.

Lula74 · 13/10/2022 08:41

@confused162 Yes, I think that's the same here too. My fear is, and maybe this is illogical, that our little local Nuffield is quite small, three operating theatres and 30 beds, and not very near the huge women's unit the NHS will do me in. When I bleed, I bleed spectacularly - dropped my Hg 35 points in 3 hours last time which GP estimated 3 pints - and I want to be in the big hospital with intensive care and a blood bank when they operate on me, not a posh little cottage hosp without the "big guns" facilities, if that makes sense. So I didn't get much further on my research. If I could pay to be done in the same place, I'd be finding the money somehow, or trying to... Thank you! 💜

CookPassBabtridge · 13/10/2022 08:42

I finally just had my huge fibroid and womb taken out, been on list since July 2021. I googled prices in desperation too! I got a cancellation, I hope you get a call soon if you've been waiting a while 🤞🏼

Janjingles · 13/10/2022 08:45

@Lula74 Aww I’m so sorry to hear that :( It’s so demoralising when you see the blood, it’s like going through a trauma each time. I think my blood loss might be improving a bit but I’m still having clots randomly! it’s seems. Without any warning! Its really strange, one day i can bleed loads then it suddenly stops for a day! it’s really confusing and so hard to go about your daily life..Fingers crossed we get both get surgery asap…I have a rare blood group too maybe there’s a connection;)
