I got some food stuck in my oesophagus late last night. I threw it up violently. I now can't keep anything down. I don't feel unwell or nauseous, but when I try and drink water, then tried fizzy drinks, banana it just feels stuck and the only relief I have it to regurgitate it. Was worried as I've had no water really all day as this keeps happening. I called 111 who said just as a precaution go to nearest a and e in case I have aspirated the food.very anxious person so found it terrifying but they said because I'm having no problems talking and my vitals are all fine they are not concerned at all it's in my lungs. They said to keep trying to eat and drink and my oesophagus is just bruised. They examined my tummy and said it was nice and soft and sent me on my way. Now I'm happy of course they don't think it's serious but in the meantime i have had no water all day and I'm starving and this surely isn't normal. I'm relieved I've been checkedd out but he just said keep trying to eat and drink but anything I do just hurts in my gullet badly and doesn't feel like it quite reaches my stomach and then I throw it up just for pure relief. I am not looking for medical advice I just feel a bit at a loss I suppose. Looking for a handhold. Have tried antacids too and nothing. I could just cry.

Have you tried something simple like yoghurt? Can you drink water?

EmmaH2022 · 05/08/2022 19:45

Can you manage a teaspoon of water? I had to take that route when I had noro. It is annoying taking teaspoons out of a glass but I kept it down.

i'm so sorry you're having this experience.

LIZS · 05/08/2022 19:46

Icelolly ?

Hugasauras · 05/08/2022 19:47

Do you think it's maybe your anxiety, OP? It seems strange you can't even swallow water. It sounds rotten for you Sad

Mumdiva99 · 05/08/2022 19:50

Suck an ice lolly - with sugar in it.
If you can do that then advance to a sorbet or ice cream bar.

Your throat is bruised and you can feel the food going down. Don't worry about this. It will go.

Jalisco · 05/08/2022 19:50

Slightly warmed milk mixed with honey. Lines the stomach and throat, and honey has soothing and antiseptic qualities. And no fizzy drinks!

Jujubeans1 · 05/08/2022 19:50

I can't keep anything down without this stuck feeling. Even water. And it's painful. Then I regurgitate it and the pain goes away. It's like a spasm almost when I swallow. Maybe it is my anxiety but I don't think so 😔

Try 5ml water every 5 minutes and see how that goes.

SausageinaBun · 05/08/2022 20:00

Are you swallowing your own saliva?

Littlemissprosecco · 05/08/2022 20:02

Ice cubes

bbqhulahoop · 05/08/2022 20:03

If you've been checked out I wonder if anxiety is playing it's part. Try an ice cream or lolly or even an ice cube that just melts slowly and trickles down?

Sirzy · 05/08/2022 20:05

I get a very similar feeling with my anxiety so that could well be playing a part in it.

I would syringe or sip tiny amounts regularly

MacKenzieMcHale · 05/08/2022 20:08

I've had this - I got a bit of steak stuck in my throat and my oesophagus went into spasm.

I waited overnight to see if it resolved but couldn't keep water down, was admitted to hospital who gave me a muscle relaxant via IV, then a scan to make sure the steak was no longer a blockage.

This was after years of me not dealing with really bad acid reflux; I had an outpatient appointment for a barium swallow and was given Lansaprazole.

This was about 14 years ago and it's never happened since.

Seriously though, muscle relaxant.

Afterfire · 05/08/2022 20:09

I’ve had exactly this a few times as I have sjorgens syndrome and it’s a common occurrence with that. It is down to bruising and anxiety. Use a straw to drink Luke warm water - cold will set off your muscles and be painful again. Usually by the second day it feels a lot better, throats heal very quickly. It is a horrible feeling though. And so scary too.

WTF475878237NC · 05/08/2022 20:11

I had this for two days after I scratched my gullet with a nasty fish bone. It felt like it was stuck for two days after it had gone. It'll pass.

Jujubeans1 · 05/08/2022 20:20

This sounds like it exactly.

ice chips. One or two at a time.

Garman · 05/08/2022 20:24

It's not getting stuck, as you've been told your oesophagus is bruised. Don't throw it back up, just deal with the sensation for a bit and you'll realise you can and are keeping the food or water down. It's your brain reacting to the bruised area sensation and causing you panic.

MacKenzieMcHale · 05/08/2022 20:27

This may or may not be true. It wasn't for me. My oesophageal muscles were in spasm so nothing could physically pass through.

Nobody has checked this for the OP, so I'd be wary of telling her it's not getting stuck when none of us have any idea if it is or not.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 05/08/2022 20:44

The thing is, if you lived in my native country, you have a choice. You can go see a doctor, and pay to be treated, even though it may not be something that can sort it self out with time.
You've been seen. You are not in any danger. I know it really sucks, but I think it's a price to pay for free medical. Or you can go private.

MacKenzieMcHale · 05/08/2022 21:05

The price for free healthcare is not not having your medical problem correctly diagnosed and treated.

Jujubeans1 · 05/08/2022 21:27

I definitely think it is in spasm. I am still struggling to keep anything down. I will have to go back tomorrow. I don't want to go to a & e but where else can I go on a Saturday. Would a private doctor prescribe me a muscle relaxant maybe to see if that helps. I have gone all day and night without water now. It physically won't stay down.

Almost certainly some is getting down, even if some comes back. Dh uses liquid gaviscon when he gets similar reflux and gagging. If you have any take it and it may resolve by morning. 111 can refer you to ooh gp tomorrow if no change or try a pharmacist.

Afterfire · 05/08/2022 23:03

If you can just keep the water in your mouth and swirl it around you’ll eventually swallow some of it even if you don’t think you will.

lking679 · 05/08/2022 23:09

Are you swallowing saliva? You’ll know if you can’t because you’ll be spitting it out instead.
Go back to a&e, I’d go early morning when it’s quietest from the night before. If you haven’t had anything to drink for over 24hr a they should check for dehydration.
