I got some food stuck in my oesophagus late last night. I threw it up violently. I now can't keep anything down. I don't feel unwell or nauseous, but when I try and drink water, then tried fizzy drinks, banana it just feels stuck and the only relief I have it to regurgitate it. Was worried as I've had no water really all day as this keeps happening. I called 111 who said just as a precaution go to nearest a and e in case I have aspirated the food.very anxious person so found it terrifying but they said because I'm having no problems talking and my vitals are all fine they are not concerned at all it's in my lungs. They said to keep trying to eat and drink and my oesophagus is just bruised. They examined my tummy and said it was nice and soft and sent me on my way. Now I'm happy of course they don't think it's serious but in the meantime i have had no water all day and I'm starving and this surely isn't normal. I'm relieved I've been checkedd out but he just said keep trying to eat and drink but anything I do just hurts in my gullet badly and doesn't feel like it quite reaches my stomach and then I throw it up just for pure relief. I am not looking for medical advice I just feel a bit at a loss I suppose. Looking for a handhold. Have tried antacids too and nothing. I could just cry.

I've had this, it's the most horrendous feeling and I couldn't even swallow my own saliva. Your osophegus is likely in spasm. I'd had it happen a few times where being sick would relive it but the last time it happened I had to go to hospital. They gave me intravenous omeprazole which is used for acid reflux. It did clear within 2 days almost like the spasm went the other way and I could suddenly swallow. I've taken omeprazole every day for the last 3 years since it happened and it hasn't happened again. I would go back and get something intravenous if you can't swallow any medication x

I couldn't swallow my own saliva either, and had to spit it out every few minutes. It's the scariest feeling.

I'm not understanding some of the responses on this thread; some water will be going down even if you don't think it is? Not if the oesophagus is bloody clamped shut!

Not sure how a private GP works but can't see it happening quicker than going back to A&E right now.

I am sorry it sounds awful I found this on the internet.
Natural remedies
Standardized deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) extract, taken an hour or two before or after meals, may help reduce spasms. It’s available in many forms, including chewable tablets and powder.
Peppermint oil is a smooth-muscle relaxant that may also help calm down spasms. Try sucking on a peppermint lozenge or drinking a solution of water with peppermint oil drops added to it.

I don’t know why you’re being so sneery about my reply.

I have lupus and sjorgens which means this happens to me regularly. Sjorgens means I don’t produce enough saliva- food gets stuck ALL THE TIME. I am also under an oral specialist for this and for recurrent oesophageal thrush. It’s horrible but I have found that genuinely if I keep the water in my mouth without actively trying to swallow it eventually you do sort of absorb some of it, even if it’s just a dribble. Even if your oesophagus is in spasm. It’s a bit like trickling a tiny drop in without actively trying to swallow it.

There’s no need to be so aggressive towards someone who - like yourself- is only trying to help.

I have all of a sudden after 24 hours been able to keep some water down for half an hour. I'll take that for tonight, get some sleep and reassess tomorrow.

OP, just rinse your mouth with water but don't try to swallow. Leave it a while, then try small sips through a straw. Don't rush.

Once you manage that, try other liquids - little sips of soup etc. It will pass.

That's great, hopefully it just needed to heal and relax

Hope you feel better soon

SweetSakura · 06/08/2022 07:28

Definitely go to your GP though. There is a difference between what a &e will be concerned about and what a GP will want to investigate

I have just spent a week choking on drinks and food so you have my sympathy. It was miserable and horrifying in equal measure! (Thankfully I had a neurologist appointment booked already for other symptoms, so now have a diagnosis and treatment. )

MissGlitterSparkles · 06/08/2022 09:05

Hope you are feeling a bit better now OP. If needed, call 111 for an out of hours GP appt. This is the best route for treatment, rather than A&E.

MacKenzieMcHale · 06/08/2022 09:10

Hurrah OP!
