Does this wound need looking at again?

Ds2 is 11 and sliced his foot up badly yesterday.

Minor injuries looked at it and while one of the cuts was straightforward, the other was jagged, deep and bleeding heavily. They put 2 stitches in and bandaged heavily to help stop the bleeding. As instructed we removed that bandage today and put a fresh dressing on. I was surprised at how wide the cut was and the stitches didn't really seem to be pulling the edges together. My experience is around nice clean surgical wounds though so don't know if this is actually normal for a trauma related wound. DS has a school trip to a theme park and his y6 residential next week so is desperate to be on the mend by then.

Can any medical types confirm if this is all normal looking or if it needs looking at again? I want to give it the best possible chance to heal well. He's awaiting an asd assessment and did not cope well with the hospital so would rather avoid putting him through another session of someone poking his foot if it looks like it should do.

I think it might be too late for re stitching as the edges will already be starting to heal over, it does look very wide and will leave a huge scar and probably a bit of a dent unless they manage to get those edges closer together, I think they might have to do it as a surgical mend rather than a stitch job.

Floralnomad · 11/07/2022 18:44

I’d go back with that , how is he supposed to walk with that all gaping open . I’m usually very laid back but I wouldn’t be happy with that at all .

GAW19 · 11/07/2022 18:51

That doesn't look good at all tbh, I would take him to get it seen to asap

BobBobBobbing · 11/07/2022 19:09

Bugger, I was hoping you'd tell me it was normal.

Back to minor injuries or via GP do you reckon?

Not a medic but I think that needs sorting out probably, doesn't look right to me.

UrsulaBursula · 11/07/2022 19:15

Definitely have it looked at. I did something quite similar to the bottom of my foot about 2 years ago. Although I didn’t get any medical treatment until the week after injuring my foot - the DR did say I should have come in as soon as it happened.

Remember cuts in the bottom of your feet are prone to bacteria and can take longer to heal as naturally you put pressure on your feet daily.

UrsulaBursula · 11/07/2022 19:17

Not our business but do you mind me asking how it happened? Looks deep

I remember when I was younger ny brother stepped on a plug and 2/3 pins went straight through his foot

JuneOsborne · 11/07/2022 19:18

I'd get that seen again too.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 11/07/2022 19:19

That needs a good clean out, and theatre I expect. Goodness that is deep.

AGreatUsername · 11/07/2022 19:20

I’d go to A&E this evening rather than wait for minors to open again tomorrow. My son recently did similar to his hand and ended up having surgery and repeated casts and butterfly stitches to make the blooming thing close. I wouldn’t think he’ll be going to the theme park 😢

Spaghetti0 · 11/07/2022 19:24

Poor boy. That looks painful

RhymesWithAntelope · 11/07/2022 19:30

No help at all but bloody hell!

I agree that needs seen again asap

Hope you get it sorted

terriblyangryattimes · 11/07/2022 19:38

A&e for that I'd say. Poor kid, hope he's on the mend soon

LondonQueen · 11/07/2022 19:39

Definitely needs to be seen to, looks very deep and he just be in agony poor lad.

BobBobBobbing · 11/07/2022 19:39

@UrsulaBursula Him and his mate were mucking about at a local stream- they have a den down there. He'd taken his shoes off to paddle and his mate tripped and knocked into him. He thinks he stepped on a glass bottle. Sad

Luckily his mate was an absolute superstar- rang us, looked after him and directed us to where they were. Thank goodness for scouts training them on what to do in an emergency.

Thank for your help everyone, I'll take him back. Fingers crossed they can help.

Wound care trained here - he needs to be seen as soon as possible (although not an a&e scenario tonight) as it screams ingestion risk to me. I would go to minor injuries tomorrow when it opens.

MrsAquaman · 11/07/2022 19:40

Is it red/hot atound the wound? Or bleeding easily/weeping? Is it wet? Difficult to tell as I can't zoom in on pic. Are stitches still in place? Tbh even if u went back they wouldn't be able to stitch it again, too late. But if he can last I'd wait till am for minors. Wash it with warm tap water and apply dressing and try and keep it elevated and off it. Try not to keep changing dressings but unless your kid has cold/flu like symptoms, temp, feeling unwell etc it can probably wait. What dressing do u have to put on it?

endofthelinefinally · 11/07/2022 19:43

That looks nasty and I agree with pp that it needs attention sooner rather than later. It looks like they didn't put any deep sutures in.

BobBobBobbing · 11/07/2022 19:53

@hashbrownsandwich thank you that's really useful!

@MrsAquaman it's not hot or weeping but the bandage was stiff with dried blood so it continued to bleed well after it was bandaged. He wouldn't let me get to close to it but the stitches were still there, but not pulling the two sides together very well. You could def put something into the wound. Edges looked like dead skin but no pus or anything. They gave us something labelled post op dressing (central pad in the middle, clear plastic sticky bit) and a cushioned dressing (like a giant squishy plaster).

He was told that he could walk on his tip toes but I've been carrying him round or he's been crawling or hopping as he can't bear to put any pressure on it. I've had him with the foot up as it helps ease the pain a little.

Hope they checked him for tetanus cover and if glass was the culprit that it was all removed. I cut my elbow with the edge of a pane of glass and had to have it xrayed even though it was a solid pane. (Needed stitches) .

Smell, redness, heat, swelling, ooze, and tracking redness get sorted immediately, did they give him prophylactic antibiotics ?

Underscore21 · 11/07/2022 20:07

That could be infected OP and yes it can happen that quickly.
That needs looking at again promptly. Glass you say? Were all remnants removed?

BobBobBobbing · 11/07/2022 20:08

@Windypants21 yes they checked his tetanus cover and x-rayed for glass. Lovely radiographer let him see the x-ray which he loved. No prophylactic antibiotics, which I was a bit surprised with as he was covered in mud when we went in.

FannyFifer · 11/07/2022 20:08

That definitely needs looked at again.

I would have thought antib's in the circumstances but as you're getting it checked again just 'remind' them of how it happened.

Hope all goes well, poor soul , that is a nasty cut.

Yodaisawally · 11/07/2022 20:39

Ooof, that looks nasty. Did they not mention stitching or fling? Given where it is he won't be able to walk without reopening it. He's going to need a cast or boot surely?
