Please could you all tell me how many days you bleed for during your period.

Just had a very short period - 2 1/2 days. Wondering if this is normal.

Last period was 18 December and it was the usual quite heavy for 2 days and then gradually tapered out over the next 5/6 days. This one started Sunday 13th, quite heavy for one day then light and stopped completely Tuesday afternoon, not even a tiny drop since then.

Only time I had somethign like this before I was pregnant! I had implantation bleeding during my last two pregnancies but much less blood. Am not currently taking contraceptive so it is (gulp) possible but I did bleed a lot. Or this short period could just be a perimenopausal symptom - I am 42 1/2.

Anyone like to share their experiences. Thanks (feeling a bit nervous now!)

3-4 days, max, since my early-20s, and they are getting lighter as I get older. I reckon it will take me about 15 years to recoup investment on Mooncup. Am very fertile, though, nonetheless, and have had some spells of very painful periods, too. Only conceived DC4 from being careless, not deliberate TTC, at age 39.

I don't bleed much post-partum, either, always amused by the stuffed pig stories.

Thanks flack, had another very short bleed yesterday afternoon so it does look like a very short period. Will certainly be on here again if it proves otherwise! However got no symptoms so think I am OK>

How weird that no one else replied! I think more typical experience is more like 4-6 days, of which 2-3 might be fairly heavy.
I was once told by a health professional that he only reason a lot of women find periods heavier as they get older is because they stop using the Pill after having kids (don't know if that's true, though).
I used to always have split periods, 2-3 days on, a day off, then another day on. Don't know how common that is, either, but normal for some of us, anyway.

Sunshinemummy · 18/01/2008 13:48

5 days max but often only 3, sometimes with a break of a couple of days and then a further day's bleeding.

foxinsocks · 18/01/2008 13:50

I think they can be short can't they?

Mine average around 7-10 days. I too sometimes get a day in the middle where nothing much happens though.

MaeWest · 18/01/2008 13:51

Only 2-3 days heavy enough to use towel or tampon for me, but then a few days of spotting. I'm not on the pill at the moment, and I think this is what my body does 'normally' (as opposed to the 'fake' period you get with combined pill).

I was 18 when I went on the pill, but remember that before that periods were definitely heavier, more PMT symptoms. I'm now just coming up to 30.

NomDePlume · 18/01/2008 13:51

4 ish

NomDePlume · 18/01/2008 13:52

sorry, meant to say am almost 26 if that makes any difference

tasjaSAmuminUK · 18/01/2008 13:52

3-4days

OverMyDeadBody · 18/01/2008 13:52

3-4 days max, 2 and a half days not uncommon for me, but they are very irregular.

lulumama · 18/01/2008 13:52

before i had the coil , it was usually around 5 days of bleeding and a day of light spotting, now, i have a day or two of spotting .

it might be perimoenopause, or pregnancy , or just one of those things ! impossible to say, really, a test might put your mind at rest.. and then you are bound to come on!

Maidamess · 18/01/2008 13:53

5, 2 OK, 3 gushy. Yuck.

notalone · 18/01/2008 13:53

Used to be 7 days in my early twenties but now they are lighter and around 5 days.

Is there any link with lighter periods and being less fertile btw?

JodieG1 · 18/01/2008 13:53

Around 7 days, the first few days are very heavy and uncomfortable. I also sometimes have a day near the end where nothing happens and then starts again.

Eulalia · 19/01/2008 11:58

Arggh started again this morning, day 6, quite bright red after it being brown. At least I know I am not pg although lucky as we did 'it' on 1st Jan which was 13 days before period started. I think I may not be fertile though, its very on/off with me having years without periods when breastfeeding. 3 kids is enough though, don't want any more .... better get contraception sorted though just in case.

notalone - no I don't think there is any link, been researching this and in fact when you start to lose your fertility periods can become heavier, something to do with progesterone levels not regulating the lining of your uterus. Not looking forward to that so going to go back on the mini-pill as the last time it seemed to stop them completely.

Tangas · 19/01/2008 12:08

6/7 days- start heavy just gets lighter and lighter. strange coz befor i had DS they were about 3 days...

Lizzylou · 19/01/2008 12:12

Again 6/7 days.

notalone · 20/01/2008 18:03

Thanks Eulalia - that is something that has concerned me so you have helped put my mind at rest.

Have you thought about the contraceptive injection. Its supposed to be a lot better than it was and may help regulate you too?

JingleyJen · 20/01/2008 18:05

from first spot to all over is usually 6-7 days but proper bleed 3-4 days

ProfessorGrammaticus · 20/01/2008 18:07

5

PersonalClown · 20/01/2008 18:09

Mine are just starting to settle after having the non-hormonal coil in September.
1 day of spotting, 2-3 days of average to heavyish bleeding then 2 days of spotting afterwards.
A little crampy and achey when due on.

belcantavinissima · 20/01/2008 18:10

7 or 8

fuzzywuzzy · 20/01/2008 18:15

prior to using a mooncup between 8-10 days, and they were blardy painful to boot.

Now they're about 6-7 days, and not so painful.

Had a friend whos periods used to last for three days only, god I used to be so jealous of her.

iamdingdong · 20/01/2008 18:29

3-4 days heavy for 2 days and quite painful but over and done with quickly thank god - heavier, more painful and shorter since childbirth
