Can anxiety/stress cause numb/tingling in body

Saturday I noticed my arm was numb, which was weird and so I called docs as it didn't go on Monday, they said most likely a pulled muscle/nerve and to wait a week to see if it goes, I've now noticed both my legs are tingling/numb and my right arm is a bit aswell, hands also have pins and needles.
I've just gone through a break up and I'm wondering if this could be stress/heartbreak? I'm worried about the symptoms but they did start out of nowhere and the day after my now ex partner left me.
It just seems very coincidental...dr google is scaring me though! I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and it's been ok?

It could be stress related yes. Stress can do a lot of physical things to the body☹️

Getintoyou · 06/07/2022 21:40

Yes definitely, but make sure your b12, vitamin d, ferritin is all topped up.

I've always suffered with very low vitamin D, I was borderline deficient in March but just within the low range, I'm terrible for remembering but now the sun is out and I've been out a lot I wouldn't have thought that could be the cause

Yes, stress and anxiety can really create some strange physical reactions. Often my body tells me I am anxious before my brain does.

Can it last this long if anxiety/stress related though? It's been consistent

Yeah I had this down my arm and in my face. May have been slightly muscular but it got MUCH worse with anxiety. Lie down flat on the floor, put your headphones on and play some music and try to forget about it. You may well find it stops.

Mine is both legs now... it's really weird, I'm not sure if this is stress or not but it's definitely spreading throughout my body, it's just a numb/tingling feeling it's horrible

Well it can unfortunately last for duration of the stress. So not just the actual stressful event itself but while your still processing it too

It just seems so strange, I'm not sure if I'm overthinking but I'm now getting cramps. It's just one thing on top of the other! :(

Perhaps you should talk to your doctor or call 111 again, was the advice on your other thread helpful.

DasGirl · 07/07/2022 10:54

Stress most definitely can and does produce physical symptoms. One off the things it does is make our bodies more sensitive and make us more hyper vigilant.

I'm not saying this is definitely stress related but rapid spreading throughout the body can often be an indication. A trapped nerve or even various neurological conditions often stay affecting one area of the body for much longer.

But if you're concerned I would definitely talk to your GP

I don't want to bother the doctor again as we only spoke Monday and they said to wait it out

Thank you. It does seem weird and I'm so focused on it I think I'm making it worse 😭

Yes, I had this many years ago. I was totally convinced it was some sort of brain tumour and couldn’t believe it when it was diagnosed as stress. My GP said it was a type of migraine. The clue was, apparently, that it was on both sides of my body. I still get it occasionally but very mildly in comparison with the first time.

Ah! Mine is mainly in my right leg and left arm, right leg keeps cramping and right arm is numb and tingly, I don't know what's going on 😫

Really worrying that this is something sinister :/

Call 111

I think you’ve probably trapped a nerve around your neck or something but if it carries on much longer it will need checking

I don't want to call 111 as docs said to leave until Tuesday, and as I said this all started after partner cheated so I did initially think it was stress. I've took ibuprofen but my leg is just cramping consistently and hurts and my right hand is numb on and off. My right leg almost feels like sciatica, I feel it in my bottom going down

Absolutely. I once ended up in A&E with a panic attack that looked like a stroke, numb tingly leg one day, the arm as well the next, by the third day it was my face too. I’ve had lots of anxiety attacks in my life but not one like that before or since

Did it last on and off for a while? I've had this since Saturday in my arm but the legs just started a few days ago, my mum said and I quote 'it's one thing after the other with you' I do suffer with health anxiety so it's hard to know whether I'm exaggerating my symptoms and making them worse or not. Deffo worrying me tho :(

It may be sciatica, it could be a trapped nerve but you wont know unless you get yourself checked. Its clearly stressing you out and waiting till Tuesday will stress you more, you have been posting about this every day and we cant really answer your questions.

anonxc · 09/07/2022 17:37

I'm actually due on my period and wondering if these symptoms could be normal pmdd thinking about it, last month I had severe pelvic pain a week and half before I was due and was sent for an urgent scan which was ok, but now this month a few days before I'm due I'm having leg cramps and numb arms which I just searched and saw pmdd can cause that, maybe I should wait for my period to come

Tingling/numbness must never be ignored, I had tingling, pins & needles in my legs, numbness, when I was 40, saw GP, (this was before Covid) urgent referral to Neurologist, dx with Transverse Myelitis, two areas of inflammation in my spinal cord and lesions found on my brain, by MRI, was told by Neuro, he suspected MS but unable to confirm until a further relapse and two years later I suffered a further relapse Multiple Sclerosis confirmed by MRI.

It may be a totally innocent cause OP, but please get it checked out throughly. lots of conditions can mimic these symptoms. But the sooner you can get treatment, the better.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I've spoken to a doctor and they said to wait, I've posting to see if anyone else had experiences of this. I don't really see a point for your rude comment, if you have no advice keep it moving..

Thank you, I will call up doctor on Monday to let them know I'm still experiencing these symptoms
