Sweating buckets in the night.... am I alone?

I have had this in the past but for the last 4 nights I have woken up soaked!!! I even took my nightie off at 2 AM and this morning it was still wet!
Now I am only 37 and have had no periods in 3 months (this is being investigated by a usually slow NHS)....
I don't think it's pre-menopause as I have had this in the past but I don't recall having it so badly....

whenever i've had nightsweats it has been to do with something nasty like mastisits or a UTI that otherwise had no symptoms. are you feeling OK otherwise? i'd definitely mention it to GP.

sweetpie · 25/11/2004 10:25

I am seeing GP next week so will mention it. I do feel fine. I don't have mastitis (not BF anymore) or do not have the flu.

Hate to say it sweetpie, but no periods and night sweats are both symptoms of premature ovarian failure/early menopause. How do you feel during the day?

sweetpie · 26/11/2004 09:36

Thanks Willow... I feel fine.... I have lost "more" hair too though I think that's settling down now.
I am awaiting for a gynaecology referral....
It can't be menopause, i am 37. Everyone on both sides of my family had their menopause at a normal age.... grrrr....
I didn't have any night sweat last night which was if anything quite pleasant!

Oh Sweetpie. Have been meaning to post on this thread. For the last few months I have had to change my bedding EVERY morning. My sheets and PJ's are sodden. I don't know why. Could be stress related I even had a blood test for thyroid problems a few weeks ago-which came back normal. It's horrid isn't it? If I ever do find a man I can guarantee it will be a one night stand. After he's snorkelled off in the morning he won't be back. Have you tried changing your bedding? I'm thinking I may be allergic to my goose down duvet.

Hair loss, absent periods and intolerance to heat, causing night sweats, are also the most common signs of an over-active thyroid. Ask your GP for blood tests.

sweetpie · 26/11/2004 09:44

LOL Spook..... not at your predicament of course!
I have wondered about my bedding, I may just be too hot.
As I know my hormones are not doing the right job at the moment I am putting it down to that but I am definitely keeping an eye on other causes....
What is your cycle like ? Is it normal?

OP posts:
sweetpie · 26/11/2004 09:45

My thyroid was check and is normal....

I had a few night sweats some time ago but I think it might have been when I was pregnant (can't remember). That would suggest they were hormonal, sorry. I know how horrible they are, though and wanted to say how sorry I am you are experiencing them. I do associate them with the menopause too, so I think you should definitely mention this to your GP.

JoolsToo · 26/11/2004 09:51

sweetpie - I menopaused at 36! - but fortunately no symptons other than my periods stopped!

good luck!

spook · 26/11/2004 09:55

My periods are to the minute Sweetpie so don't think it can be the menopause. I'm 37. I hope it's not anyway. There's life in the old dog yet for my scuba diving young stud (wherever he may be) AM definately going to change bedding I think but it's the expense really of buying a new duvet for an experiment. But can't carry on like this. The laundry bill alone has pushed up the National Grid.

KristinaM · 26/11/2004 09:56

I had similar symptoms when my baby was a few weeks old ( the nights sweats i mean - obviously i had no periods). GP tested hormone levels as she thought it was due to breast feeding but it was my thyroid. I think they need to test TSH levels and T3 and T4.
Has your weight changed Sweetpie?

JoolsToo · 26/11/2004 10:16

spook - I can assure you there's a LOT of life left in me yet! You don't suddenly become a decrepit old fart at menopause

Just off to do a few cartwheels (sniff)

spook · 26/11/2004 10:20

Oh honey!! I know. As soona s I posted that thread I realised it had come out wrong. What I meant was if I ever do fall in love again I would love to have another baby. Oh God-what a thought.
Anyway my cartwheeling buddy-I honestly didn't mean how it sounded. Here-have a sweaty hug (((((((()))))))

lowcalCOD · 20/01/2005 10:29

WigWamBam · 20/01/2005 10:36

lowcalCOD · 20/01/2005 10:44

lol and you posted on it!

WigWamBam · 20/01/2005 10:47

I know - must have cheese for brains this morning!

carolerl · 22/01/2005 11:19

I had this for a while and had a number of tests. Luckily I found the NHS very fast and very attentive and took it quite seriously. I assumed early menopause (42) and wasn't too bothered. More bothered about not being able to sleep! However, after ruling out thyroid problems, hormonal problems and non hodgkin's lymphoma (?!) the sweats just stopped. Can only put it down to stress - teenage daughter was being particularly difficult, my father was terminally ill and I was driving 1000 miles a week to visit, and I'd just been promoted at work. I did try some alternative therapies while the investigations were going on but none seemed to work (although reiki certainly helped me with the tiredness and can't cope feeling).
Good luck - I hope they get to the bottom of it
