My arse is letting me down and I need to tone it up. Any suggestions?

kittywise · 16/01/2008 12:13

I asked the same thing elsewhere and was told to start doing lots of lunges plus the stair machine at the gym!

Not that I ever got round to it you understand...!

Wisteria · 16/01/2008 12:17

Squats - loads and loads of them.

Lying on your tummy (pulling it all in) and imagine someone pulling your leg so it lifts off the floor until your arse tightens - if you get a tightness or pain in lower back you are not doing it properly.

I recommend Pilates; for pert norks too and no bingo wings!

lazarou · 16/01/2008 12:24

looks like im ging to have to get down the gym then. I used to go all the time before babies. I suppose I could get an exercise bike, but i fear it may just sit in the corner of my room with half my wardrobe hanging off it.

You don't need any equipment to tone yourself up - 'tis a myth - you may need some willpower though

DrNortherner · 16/01/2008 12:29

Walking and running

lazarou · 16/01/2008 12:34

I wish I had a car, then I could drive to the gym. I would cycle but I never did my cycling proficiency so I don't know the correct technique for riding amongst the traffic. Excuses excuses

Seconding Callanatics!

Sadly our local classes have ended but I sometimes do the exercises at home.

Wisteria · 16/01/2008 12:37

PMSL laz - face it, you don't really want to do it

Can't see the point of shelling out on extortionate gym fees when half an hour a day at home will do the same job tbh

lazarou · 16/01/2008 12:41

No, I really do want to do it!!! I want firm buttttocks. I haven't got any appropriate exercise clothing. perhaps a shopping trip is in order. I am feeling much more enthusiastic now.

if you're in your own house you can wear your pyjamas!

excuses, excuses (sounds just like me )

DrNortherner · 16/01/2008 18:38

What is callenetics?

lazarou · 16/01/2008 18:39

I'll definitely do something, maybe get dh to play squash (snigger) with me

My Mum used to do Callanetics - I think Fergie pioneered it in the '80's IIRC.

I would imagine Pilates has sort of usurped it now - was all about core strength and slow controlled movements so virtually the same

OverMyDeadBody · 16/01/2008 18:48

Another vote for callanetics, I have never been to classes but have the book and it is amazing. Doesn't just give you a firm pert bum, it gives you firm pert everything!

Also lots of cycling does the trick. I never did cycling proficiency either, just follow the same rules as when driving.

OverMyDeadBody · 16/01/2008 18:49

Callanetics was started by someone named callan Pinckney, here's the uk website

OverMyDeadBody · 16/01/2008 18:50

It's all about small controlled movements, I especially find the tummy exercixes great, much more effective than normal sit-ups.

Eliza2 · 16/01/2008 19:11

Callanetics is more painful than Pilate, I find! When you work the muscles on the tummy or bottom exercises the whole class groans. It seems to suck you in. I find it more taxing than Pilates.

Mnn. So why did I get out of the habit of doing my video?

dinny · 16/01/2008 19:12

yoga

I suggest the video "I want those buns" by Tamilee Webb. You can probably get it on ebay or amazon. 2 x15min sets of exercises - very effective if a little painful.

Wisteria · 16/01/2008 19:41

pilates quite taxing enough
