Hayfever bad this year?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 09:27

Is anyone's hayfever really bad this year?

Always had it but this year it's so bad, I have to use eyedrops and even then still horrid.

Have to have window open due to fresh air/menopause night sweats...

Any advice?

Fexofenadine, 180mg. Game changer.

icelollies · 13/06/2022 09:29

Yes, worst hay fever ever, so I’m no help, just here to sympathise!

Limesaregreen · 13/06/2022 09:30

no Advice but agree with all you say. Menopause makes it worse as I too have windows open for a cool breeze letting more pollen in bedroom.

Hotcuppatea · 13/06/2022 09:31

It's terrible this year 😩

Always wear sunglasses and keep taking the drugs.

Yodaisawally · 13/06/2022 09:37

It's been all over the news about 'thunder fever'. Joys.

Fexo and I've just got what I think is a new nasal steroid (or one that has been reclassified post Brexit) called Nasocourt, started that on Saturday and it's helping (OTC).

Once it starts I have to take the drugs all the way through the season or it's impossible to get back on top of it again.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 13/06/2022 09:42

Yep horrendous yesterday, eyes swollen and weeping, nose pouring. Looked a state.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 09:47

Thanks vipers!

Last year I swear it was better than this... and then weather forecaster mentions nettle pollen?! WTAF?!

Absolutely horrible. My eyes feel like they are bulging out of my head and it’s making me so ratty and irritated! I’m not fun to be around at the moment

BlackSwan · 13/06/2022 10:00

Really awful. I was prescribed fexofenadine in a high dose because of a reaction to the covid vaccine. I'm still on it & glad I have it because my hayfever has never been this bad. Could there be a link to the vaccine or covid itself? There are reports of asthma being worse after the vaccine.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 11:15

@BlackSwan - have had all 3 vaccines (Covid) so I hope not!

Got some OTC Allevia Fenoxofadine (sp?).

It's making my breathing bad and I get asthma but don't usually need to take inhalers. waaahhhh Sad

I'm suffering the worst hay fever for years, even my throat feels scratchy and tight.

Henerlo · 13/06/2022 11:31

I'm really suffering!

Never thought about it being the bloody vaccine. I had a reaction to it twice and earlier this year had a reaction to some other bloody actual not covid virus, which is not something I've experienced before. But my hay fever is terrible rn - can actually feel it come on and get worse rapidly when I'm out and about in certain situations. Never known it so bad.

BiscoffSundae · 13/06/2022 11:39

wow glad I seen this I was just thinking of starting this thread! I woke up horrific today, literally I’ve not stopped sneezing, my eyes are streaming I was so dizzy I was even struggling to get my kids ready for school this morning, this is the worst it’s ever been I even called the gp as there must be something stronger nothing over the counter works for me!! She said fexofenadine has just become available over the counter (use to be prescription only) so going to pick some up later hopefully it works

weirdly though my son who always gets it worse than me hasn’t had it at all this year.

BobbinHood · 13/06/2022 11:41

I’m taking Fexofenadine, as I have the last few years, but it feels like it’s started earlier for me than usual.

BiscoffSundae · 13/06/2022 11:42

I looked like I was crying this morning I see everyone else out they look so happy and smiley and I look a mess. So sick of hay fever, some people are so lucky they don’t get it

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 13/06/2022 11:58

I suffered badly as a kid but haven't had issues for years now. I'm taking antihistamines daily this year and they're not really working. It's not as bad as it was when I was a kid but it's definitely unpleasant.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 13:34

Slight update - have taken the Allevia which has Fexofenadine but only 120mg in it...

I still don't feel better. Pharmacist did say it might not work.

My head feels like it's about to explode.

Is it true you have to have no other allergies to get the vaccine for this? I used to be allergic to cats but now seem to be desensitised to them? have got one

OP posts:
AlternativePerspective · 13/06/2022 13:42

I read somewhere that it’s because of wild may where so many people let their grass grow throughout may meaning that the polun count is very high.

my hayfever reduced after I didn’t have a cat any more, not because I was allergic to the cat (although I was a bit), but because they obviously brought in polun on their paws and fur etc. But this year it’s particularly bad and I can’t take antihistamine because of other drugs I take.

Am up at the heart failure clinic this week so will ask then if there’s anything I can take, but meanwhile my air purifier is working overtime.

BiscoffSundae · 13/06/2022 13:57

Where is everyone getting the 180g ones from? As only 120 on Amazon as well?

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 13/06/2022 14:02

Wondering if you can snap the 120mg over the counter tabs in half. Not sure I'd they have the breakable tablet line like some medication...

My hayfever started about a month early this year. August better be bloody good then

BlackSwan · 13/06/2022 15:05

You can with a pill cutter

Bobbleballbags · 13/06/2022 15:23

@GonnaGetGoingReturns it took me a few days of taking fexofenadine once a day before I noticed an improvement in symptoms. I have to say it's not much of an improvement though. I haven't suffered with hayfever in about 9 years until now. I had it from childhood until approx my mid 20s then it just stopped. I'd forgotten how bad it could be.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 15:29

I guess I'd better ditch the cat then! Joking...

Can't you just snap the pills in half?

I've now seen the washing hair at night advice to help things!

OP posts:
GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 15:31

@Bobbleballbags - thanks re your experiences!

Same with me - not had hayfever that badly for a few years or it's been fine with OTC meds.

I got it badly as a child and was also badly allergic to cats but then got desensitised to them in my early 20s. My eyes before that would turn to jelly after touching cats!

Oh and this is not Covid either (people say it can be confused with it) - had a couple of negative tests.

OP posts:
GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/06/2022 15:36

PS - anyone thinking of getting hayfever vaccine, apparently Asthma UK (I think) don't recommend it, and it has nasty side effects too.

They also say to avoid alcohol Wine and Gin whilst suffering with hayfever - well thank god for that!

There's also a list of foods to eat to help with it including omega free (salmon, tuna), parsley, onions and peppers and berries. So dinner later is tuna shell pasta with onions and tomatoes (plum) and cheese sauce.
