Is anyone else’s hayfever unmanageable this year?

Cantstopsneezing2022 · 04/06/2022 06:27

I always get pretty bad hayfever but this year even with tablets (and taking more than I should be) and nose spray it seems worse than ever.
eyes are streaming, throat and ears so itchy and the sneezing and snot is ridiculous.
I’m showering and washing my hands and face often, I shower the dog when she’s been running through the grass, I’m smearing my nose and eyes with Vaseline, drying clothes inside…
Nothing is working and I feel like total shit.

I don’t get it but DS does and he is definitely worse this year. He went to bed early last night as he was so fed up, which is unheard of.

cheapskatemum · 04/06/2022 06:37

Yes, I was just commenting at work last week that my hayfever is worse this year. My colleague agreed hers is too. She has an app that tells you which particular pollens are around when & apparently it's grass & something unpronounceable that I can't remember at the moment. We're surrounded by grass at work, so that figured. I'm sorry to hear you're suffering so badly too. You have my sympathy.

PickleThePenguin · 04/06/2022 06:38

Mine seems worse this year than last. It's making me want to stay inside and not do anything 😞

Cantstopsneezing2022 · 04/06/2022 07:48

I’m blaming no now may!

I’ve just read an article on how to use the nose spray most effectively (don’t hold other nostril shut, aim at outside of nose, don’t sniff) which I haven’t been doing so I’m crossing fingers that this might help.

I would quite like to scratch the inside of my mouth and throat out at the moment. It is hideous

Margaritawithlime · 04/06/2022 07:56

YESSSSSS I’m so glad you posted I said to my husband yesterday, while trying to scratch my eyes out, that nothing was working. And the sneezing! Dear god my pelvic floor.

Oh really, that's interesting? I was told by a GP to get my head down as low as I could before spraying it. Can you link to the article please?

I have wicked hay fever, mine is on fill force us by now but I've just had the odd itchy eye ,it'll come I'm sure 🙄

LimesandClementines · 04/06/2022 07:58

Yes! Mine had eased off the past few years and I was only having a couple of bad days with it but this year it's back to being horrendous every day. I want to rip my eyes out.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 04/06/2022 07:59

A lot worse this year. For the last 3 years I’ve managed with just nasal spray as I’ve been pregnant/bf this year it isn’t enough and despite still bf I’m taking tablets too.

User48751490 · 04/06/2022 08:02

I went to my local pharmacy and explained that cetirizine or loratidine just don't work for me and could she write a slip to the GP for prescribing me something stronger.

I got a prescription for fexofenadine. What a relief!

Hopefully you can do something similar OP. Hayfever is such a bummer.

aleC4 · 04/06/2022 08:02

Mine's bad too and it's really affecting my asthma. I feel wheezy all the time despite upping my steroids and taking more ventolin.
I wish it would go away!

MayBeee · 04/06/2022 08:02

Taking antihistamines but have not found a decent nose spray . Which one do you all recommend ?

Flaunch · 04/06/2022 08:05

Mine is worse this year than it’s been for about ten years 🤧

Fizzgigg · 04/06/2022 08:11

My eyes were relentlessly streaming but I bought the Optrex hayfever eye drops and they've really really helped.
Also I was finding nasal sprays useless this year but got the Boots one that's a powder rather than a liquid and that's helping a bit too.

MmeMeursault · 04/06/2022 08:17

Yep here too

Taking 2 x Fexofenadine each day at the moment but they're hardly touching the sides as
nose still streaming and head still v blocked.

Had a couple of years relative peace from it but this year it seems to be back

The klarify app (free) and Pollen / Pollen pro apps are helpful in alerting you to the next day's predictions and with klarify you can log your symptoms.

jay55 · 04/06/2022 08:27

If I take a nasal steroid spray at the start of the season, I find I'm getting a much easier time later on.
My eyes are bad now but nose is fine.

OldTinHat · 04/06/2022 08:36

Me too!

averythinline · 04/06/2022 08:36

Me too......taking fexofejidine and cetrizine ....but chest tight and ears n eyes m throat so scratchy feel rubbish...maybe need spray as well! Worst for years... i was wondering if my immune system had gone to pot and id caught another cold...maybe its just crappy hayfever

wineandsunshine · 04/06/2022 08:59

My 10yo DS is SO bad with it.
His eyes are so puffy 😞😞 the GP has prescribed stronger antihistamine but the grass pollen has been so much stronger this year!

AnnaMagnani · 04/06/2022 09:33

This is absolutely no use to you now (sorry) but the nasal spray and eye drops need to be taken 2 weeks BEFORE the start of symptoms to be most effective.

So if you can make a note for early next year in your phone, you will be amazing next year.

I am massively lazy + have pretty much year round allergies bar December so decided to take antihistamine all year regardless. Works for me.

Cantstopsneezing2022 · 04/06/2022 12:57

Yes every year I think I might have got away with it earlier in the season so don’t start taking them early enough-I’ve put a reminder in my phone for next year now.
already on fexofenadine which has helped in previous years but not touching the sides at the moment.
the nose spray I have is flixonase.
Sorry others are suffering.

DH is really bad

Now wishing he'd had his Kenalog injection in spring like previous years!

Might be useful for severe sufferers to look into

Peridot1 · 04/06/2022 13:10

Fexofenadine is now available without prescription. It’s called Allevia. I ended up taking two yesterday. We had friends over for a bbq and were outside and it was miserable.

I’m staying indoors today. Fell shattered after yesterday. It always makes me feel utterly exhausted as well as miserable.

I may try acupuncture. Found it really good years ago.

bizzieb33 · 04/06/2022 13:20

You could ask your GP for Dymista, it's a steroid and antihistamine nasal spray.
Another option is to try a air purifier?
I presume you are not drying clothing and bedding etc outside and keeping windows closed....

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 04/06/2022 13:25

Mine started end March and has been grim - I live rurally surrounded by farm and woodland. I’m getting a bit better now - still bad but getting better.

i take max strength fexofenadine from doctor but still suffer horribly. Miraculously I didn’t get a sinus infection this year though.
