Should I take ds to the doctor?

He's 9 months old and had a temperature of just over 100 on Thursday. He spent most of the day in just a nappy, being washed down with a wet flannel to get his temperature down and eventually it worked, also with the help of Calpol and Neurofen.
He also has a horrible cough and has coughed so much that he has made himself sick the other night.
He's been waking in the night(doesn't normally) and after a feed and a cuddle, going back down ok and has a constant runny nose too.
Yesterday I gave him and ds1(has it also!)some Medised and he seemed much better. He didn't cough much last night but this morning he still has the runny nose and a slight temperature. He happily had his milk and some fruit puree for breakfast but wouldn't touch his porridge.
Just wondering whether I should take him to our gp tomorrow or leave it while longer and see how he is,especially if it's just a bad cold.
Thanks.

It sounds as though he is on the mend from what you say. It does sound like a bad cold, I would wait and see how he is tomorrow - if he seems to be eating Ok and fairly cheerful I would not bother with Dr. as the worst is probably over and he is on the up.

Btw next time he has a fever, don't flannel/sponge, they have changed the advice now - best to use a warm/hottish bath, this will actually trick the body into trying to cool itself down. Cool flannel will make it try to heat itself up iyswim. so the temp won't go down very effectively.

HTH!

LIZS · 13/01/2008 11:13

Agree it sounds under control now and there is little more the gp would advise. Try decongestants such as Olbas Oil and a vaporiser at night and raise the height of his head in bed with a rolled towel under the mattress or books under the cot feet. dd had reflux as a baby and is still occasionally sick with a bad cough , not necessarily a problem in itself.

bubblagirl · 13/01/2008 11:15

i would say for peace of mind to take him as my ds was similar and it turned out he did need medical attention but if it turns out his ok then at least it was seen to sooner rather than later

gp's dont mind bringing lo's in to be checked as you never really know with them my ds was still eating then few days later was quite ill hope feels better soon

Bubbaloo · 13/01/2008 12:13

Thanks.Didn't know that about the bath and infact I actually gave him a fairly cool bath thinking it would help.
I have a towel under the cot, phone directories under the top half of the bed and Karvol plug in,in his room.Guess you just feel a little helpless when they're so little and not very well.Hasn't eaten any of his lunch but he does seem a bit happier,so will see how he is tomorrow.
Hi Bubblagirl-haven't seen you on here for a while.Hope you are all well.x

I know how you feel, it's so hard when they are unable to tell you what's wrong. It is something you get used to a bit, once you realise how tough they are

FlllightAttendant · 13/01/2008 12:52

Oh and I didn;t know about the water thing either till a couple of months ago. NHS were telling me to sponge, but MN was on the case as usual and someone told me not to!!

LIZS · 13/01/2008 13:07

Would n't worry about an erratic appetite as long as he takes fluids.

Bubbaloo · 13/01/2008 13:47

Cheers.Good old Mumsnet.

Never ended up taking ds2 to the doctor as during the night ds1 also had the same symptons and a very high temperature.
Dh ended up at a&e with ds1 at 3.30am this morning and when he got back at 6am,he then took ds2.
Both have viruses but ds2 is alot worse. They were both put on nebulisers and ds2 was nearly admited, being told he was borderline. They are now both home but dh is going back shortly to collect some steroids and a nebuliser for ds2.Have been told if their temperatures reach 38 then we are to take them straight back.Temperature at the moment is 37.1

hope your ok also it is very worrying hugs to all

Bubbaloo · 15/01/2008 15:25

Thanks.
Ended up back at a&e again yesterday as ds1's temperature went up to over 39 and really wasn't well.
They managed to get his temperature down again but he is quite a bit dehydrated. They wanted to keep him in but after drinking 2 sachets of Diaralyte they let him home.
Ds2 has been off his milk all day and refusing to sleep and ds1 is refusing to drink anything.I have so far managed to syringe about 300mls of liquid into his mouth and have even tried tempting him with fruit shoots and ice pops but he doesn't want either.Have also been using both the asthma inhalers on ds2 but they don't seem to be making any difference.
On the plus side,ds1 only woke once in the night and ds2 slept through.

bubblagirl · 15/01/2008 16:08

oh bless em i did manage with just icepops with my ds luckily temp only up for few days but worrying few days

lets hope they'll be on the mend soon poor things

as long as small amounts of fluid and often go i hopefully will help make him perk up

and at least they are settled at night gives you strength for following day

Bubbaloo · 15/01/2008 22:52

He's now back up at a&e again.
Dh took him at 8pm.He was baking hot, with cold hands and shaking. He just phoned to say he is having bloods done and waiting to see a specialist.I'm sitting here worried sick, pulling my hair out.
Ds2 is also still sick and not eating or drinking very much. He's also still coughing lots, despite me using the inhalers.Feel so helpless not being able to do anything for them.

Oh you poor thing, and your poor dss
Sure they will be fine but it is horrible when they get such high temps isn't?
Really hope they both get well soon

spanielsmom · 15/01/2008 22:58

oh bubbaloo - so sorry to hear about this, and both at the same time - . I hope they get better soon - it is so hard when you cannot do anything more than just make them comfortable and keep an eye on them. Make sure you keep well - big hugs.

Bubbaloo · 16/01/2008 01:34

Thanks.
Dh phoned about an hour ago. They've done blood tests and he's been admitted onto the children's ward until they get the results back.Dh will sleep there with him tonight and when my mum comes over in the morning to sit with ds2,I'll go and see him.
He still hasn't drunk any fluids though.

mckmum · 16/01/2008 02:05

gosh you poor thing you must be sick with worry hope they are better soon!
haven't read the whole thread as should be in bed but just wanted to say be careful about the hot bath thing. i'm a gp and i've never heard about hot baths to bring down temps. certainly you need less clothes when you;ve got a fever, not more (although its ok to use an extra blanket temporarily when they are shivering but remove after)
its tre cold baths are out but use lukewarm not hot. sponging is debatable.
sorry this is irrelevant as they are now being looked after in hospital but didn't want people to read this and give hot baths to those poor kiddies with fevers
good luck
x

mckmum · 16/01/2008 02:17

and i really hope they get better soon - i'm sure they will

Bubbaloo · 16/01/2008 08:43

Yes,it can be very addictive on here.

Was up til 3am with ds2 coughing and being sick.
Have just phoned the hospital ward to see how ds1 is.He's being drip fed at the moment and a little tired but enjoying the toys on the ward, aswell as the animals all over the walls there.
Will hopefully get the blood results at some point today.
Will be going into see him shortly.

FunkyGlassSlipper · 16/01/2008 08:47

Your poor boys. Hope they start improving soon.

spanielsmom · 16/01/2008 10:06

Hope you are not too tired. I am sure ds1 is enjoying all the attention. It is always amazing how quickly they perk up when the doctors give them what they need. Hope you get plenty of time for hugs and cuddles.

FlllightAttendant · 16/01/2008 10:09

Gosh I just realised this was all happening, after my advice earlier in the thread I am mortified to see they are both so poorly

I'm so, so sorry Bubbaloo. I hope things improve fast.

Bubbaloo · 16/01/2008 18:22

Have now been up to the hospital a couple of times today and ds1 is still rather poorly and refusing all foods and liquids.
The doctor said apart from the dehydration he THINKS he has severe tonsilitus as he can see lots of pus filled blisters down his throat. The bloods are all back and not good at all.Apparently one of them is meant to be no higher than 5 and it was over 300.Was told this is due to a virus. He's still being drip fed and now having anti-biotics but is very lethargic and really not 'with it'.
Took ds2 to our gp today and he has a bad chest infection and have been told to carry on with the inhalers but he's also prescribed him some Amoxycillin so hopefully he'll be on the mend soon.

OP posts:
bubblagirl · 16/01/2008 18:26

hope they both feel better soon big hugs to you all

hope you manage to rest to keep your strenth up or you will feel un well also

i'll pray for speedy recovery poor thing x
