Mouth taping

sunshine05 · 11/05/2022 11:03

Has anyone tried mouth taping?

I'm curious to know if it works. I don't snore all night but I am aware of my hubby pushing me -usually in the morning when I've turned over and started snoring.

But I have this irrational fear of taping my mouth shut in case I can't breath and dont wake up- I know its silly!

I'm also going on holiday with friends in a couple of weeks and don't want to snore then 😬

Bit drastic.

Have you tried those snore nose tape things first?

RampantIvy · 11/05/2022 11:08

Why don't you put a pillow or a rolled up blanket in the bed so that you don't roll over instead?

Beachsidesunset · 11/05/2022 11:09

God, what if you vomited?

Asimhereanyway · 11/05/2022 11:10

The idea of it is terrifying!

I'm a mouth breather. There is no way I could tape my mouth shut. I’m also very claustrophobic so the fear of not being able to breathe is very real!

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 11/05/2022 11:11

Mouth breathing is really bad for all sorts of aspects of health. James Nestor’s book “Breath” is absolutely fascinating and I plan to tape my mouth at night to see if I can switch over to nasal breathing.

I’m presuming you have a nose…..

CornishPorsche · 11/05/2022 11:13

Not even a little bit unreasonable to be scared of that - I'd not cope.

I snore, but because my nose is frequently blocked despite meds and sprays. This wouldn't help that.

Do you know why you snore?

You can get a stretchy thing that goes over the top of your head and under your chin that would be safer.

God, what if you vomited?

how often do you vomit in your sleep??

Mynamenotaccepted · 11/05/2022 14:31

You only need to vomit once with your mouth taped🤨

I'm pretty sure that they don't use gaffer tape for this technique.

In any case, unless somebody is under the influence of drugs or alcohol and shouldn't be sleeping on their back at all, never mind taping their mouth shut, they're most likely to wake up at the retching stage and get up pretty sharpish, pulling the tape off as they head for the bathroom.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 11/05/2022 16:14

I’m planning on using an inch of micropore in the centre of my lips only. And am consciously nasal breathing during waking hours to prep. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/05/2022 16:16

What about a chin strap thing?

I thought the same as you. But a friend of mine's husband died from vomiting in his sleep. He was only in his 30s. So sad and scary.

Gaspingandleaping · 11/05/2022 16:20

Interesting. I know mouth taping is a 'thing' as pp said.

I've never tried it but micropore would easily come off if necessary.

nomistake · 11/05/2022 16:22

You tape the middle of your lips with a tiny piece of medical tape , not your whole mouth with frog tape! It would come off if you vomited/pulled your lips apart suddenly

hamstersarse · 11/05/2022 16:23

I've done it and my DS17 does it too

He is exclusively a nose breather now, I am 90%. (All exclusive of high cardio)

It definitely makes you feel better and it helps your VO2 Max - and you get used to it pretty quickly. Just don't tape up if you have been drinking!

There are so many benefits. Such as not spreading covid if you nose breath - the superspreaders were all mouth breathers!

hamstersarse · 11/05/2022 16:24

Agree that James Nestor is the place to go to understand all about why mouth breathing is so bad!

He has done loads of podcasts as well as a book

Blackbird2020 · 11/05/2022 16:26

I’ve tried it (with a small piece of micropore).

The first few minutes are a bit uncomfortable whilst your nose realises it needs to do a bit more work than usual, then the nose breathing becomes quite comfortable and I can get to sleep easily.

Only problem for me is that I remove it in my sleep - I’ve often found the little piece of micropore neatly placed on my bedside table when I wake up!

And it does help with snoring (or so I’ve been told).

godmum56 · 11/05/2022 16:30

May I suggest that your husband try eartaping?🙄

ExhaustedChameleon · 11/05/2022 16:33

On my Doctor's advice I've been mouth taping for 3 years now & it's brilliant!

I was a mouth breather, with very poor sleep, high anxiety & over-breathing (without realising) during the day. Taping my mouth at night has completely changed my breathing day & night & my sleep is the best it's ever been.

Here's James Nestor on Dr Chattergee showing you how loosely you tape your top & bottom lip at the front with a tiny bit of micropore.

Have you been watching Corrie lately? Sorry but I think it's hilarious.😂😂😂

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 11/05/2022 16:48

It’s only hilarious if you don’t understand how dangerous mouth breathing can be. Everyone should breathe through their noses the majority of the time, anything else causes a host of health problems some very serious

Great book! I saw it recommended on here on an insomnia thread. Just finished it.

My nose is pretty much permanently blocked all summer thanks to hay fever (and I suspect a damaged nose after an accident doesn't help) so I have no option but to mouth breathe! I'm also allergic to tape so taping my mouth shut wouldn't work. Im worried that hay fever will be the death of me!
