I was on here recently concerned that dd1 hadn`t started her period yet and at nearly 16 she did start last night.
I was prepared to the extent that she would bleed though.
When i started it was just really light (i mean hardly anything ) for months.
DD however is off school and having her second bath already. She is soaking through pads about every half an hour and its literally running out of her.
I am reassurring her snd given her some paracetamol and clean everything.
Is it normal for the first one to be so heavy ?
Cheers x

Sorry meant to say WASNT prapared for how heavy it could be.

I don't know. Mine were heavy right from the start and continued that way.

I would give the docs a call and just check because hers does sound very heavy.

fakeblonde · 11/01/2008 11:33

Am taking ds with earache at 2 40 so could mention it then-cheers

I don't think that sounds "normal" (whatever normal is ) Definitely mention it to the doctor.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2008 11:35

Mine are really heavy post children but they're not like you describe.

foxinsocks · 11/01/2008 11:36

yes, I think it's worth mentioning. It's probably completely fine but best to put your mind at rest so you can put hers at rest iyswim. No-one ever spoke to me about mine and I was convinced I was going to bleed to death, especially as everyone else had really light ones and didn't need tampons/huge pads etc.!

By the way, you can get these special night time pads which are good for heavy bleeding (I imagine she won't be able to do tampons yet) - I think they are made by Always and they are in a blue pack (they are unwieldy, and humungous and nappy like and she won't like them but they work). Also, put a towel on top of her sheet if she is worried about going through her pad/PJs.

morningpaper · 11/01/2008 11:37

Mine were like this when I was quite little - I remember that I couldn't sit through the whole of mass (1 hour) without changing a double pad

Having said that it would only be for maybe 6 hours that it was REALLY heavy, not for more than 12 hours or a day or anything.

I was quite anaemic!!

noddyholder · 11/01/2008 11:37

Did you ever find out what was bothering her before?I remember you thought she had some sort of immunity problem?I had similar and I had a couple of episodes of extremelt heavy periods.Hope she is ok

colditz · 11/01/2008 11:38

Mine were very very heavy and painful - but this doesn't really sound normal - could you get her checked over?

monkeychambers · 11/01/2008 12:22

Hope this helps - I remember my first one - standing in the bath whilst mum got the shower on and it literally running out of me, me standing there sobbing 'The book didn't make it sound like this, you never told me it was this bad etc,...' - sounds exactly the same - it only lasted a couple of days and the next ones weren't sooo bad. I would see how she is in the next few hours - sending sympathy though - poor girl.

SmartArse · 11/01/2008 12:27

Oh poor her. I think I'd get her checked just to be on the safe side. My DD's are also heavy, but not to that extent. She does leak all the time though, day and night. Both yesterday and this morning I had to strip her bed, bottom sheet and duvet cover, and bung it all in the wash with a bucket full of Vanish (which, incidentally, is pretty good, but I never seem to be able to get it all out of the 100% cotton sheets - polycotton seems better for that-time-of-the-month!).

I do hope this is just a one-off - what a way to start.

magnolia74 · 11/01/2008 12:33

Dd1 is similar and we often throw out knickers ect... because she leaks no matter what pad she has in especially at night and they stain terribly.

I was the same from the age of 12 I had really heavy painful periods and even now at 33 they are the same.

I did go to the doctor as a child though and was prescribed something that made them a bit more manageble

yes, now that you've reminded me magnolia, I think I went on the pill at about 15ish to help with all this (having had them v heavy since I was about 10/11 grrr).

There are things that can be done if they carry on this way. Hopefully, it might just be a heavy first one .

Dropdeadfred · 11/01/2008 12:39

My dd really suffers, as does her best friend. Poor things...

LaineyW · 11/01/2008 12:53

My DD started very early (she was 10) and they were heavy from the word go. Our GP put her on tranexamic acid for a while but she is very anti-pills and it was hit and miss as to whether she'd taken them (from memory you have to take quite a few every day while you're actually bleeding).

Eventually, after numerous episodes of her leaking - and me having to go and get her from school on one occasion... we were referred to a gynaecologist who said the best thing would be the pill (she's was 14 then). She finally agreed to take that last year and hasn't looked back. It's greatly reduced the flow, hasn't completely stopped the period pains though, but life is much more manageable for her.

Not the ideal solution but if it's going to continue so heavily it might be the right thing for her.

Good luck!

magnolia74 · 11/01/2008 13:13

I was given Tranexamic Acid tablets which did help and then on the pill at 14.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/01/2008 13:21

I would advise you to visit the GP and ask for a gynae referral. Many GPs are not very good with such problems. I'm a lot older than your daughter is but I've had period problems and they need addressing now. You need to find the underlying cause of the problem rather than just try the pill and transexamic acid tablets to mention but two. These will help with the symptoms but they do not address the underlying cause.

Fibroids can be a cause of heavy bleeding and these are very common.

fakeblonde · 11/01/2008 14:10

Thanks everyone.
I am reassurred by the fact so many of you had similar with the first one.

Monkeychambers-poor you-thats exactly what she must be feeling.I just dont want to panic her so i told her it was all fine normal ect at the mo.We are talking about a girl who clean passed out when she found a lice in her hair !
I will mention to gp as i know him anyway .
Noddy it wasn`t immune disorder-i think something metabolic or sim but i have to go now as got appt.Catch up later x

morningpaper · 12/01/2008 11:18

How is she doing now?

Emprexia · 12/01/2008 11:27

its probably normal, but if it happens like this again, it might be worth talking to GP about putting her on the pill so control them a little

fakeblonde · 12/01/2008 13:58

Ok saw locum gp yest as ours was sick.Only took ds as he had ear infection-he told me to put ds on meat free dairy free gluten free wheat free diet and give him a vitamin supplement instead !! mmm dont think so.

Then he launched into a lecture on not delivering placentas at del for at least 40 mins (when he saw i was a midwife ) as if babies are separated they can somehow hear heartbeat of mother thro the cord still beating away in the bed !

I didnt actually venture into asking him about dds perids at this point because i was losing faith big time.

DD however was ok overnight but got up this morning and flooded the place.Ive got some night time pads which are better. She was quite faint but i think thro being scared more than anything. She also lost quite a few clots this morning .I will just have to phone the out of hours service if it gets out of hand again but i dont really want her on medication if she can help it straight away as it could be a one off. If its the same next time then ill just have to discuss this option-at least something can be done.
Cheers x
She wont eat because she feels sick.

noddyholder · 12/01/2008 14:02

that sounds worrying hope she is ok

SmartArse · 12/01/2008 21:19

Hi FB, just wondering how your DD was doing today.

And if anyone has any good tips for getting blood out of sheets and knickers, I'd be very grateful!

vole3 · 13/01/2008 07:11

Soaking in the bath with COLD water and lots (about 200g) of salt stirred in. Hot water can fix the stain and as plasma has salts in it, the salt in the water helps remove the blood from the sheets. Leave until water has changed colour - you may need to agitate the washing a bit so get a broom handle / sink plunger to use as a washing dolly, drain out and rinse with shower attachment or buckets of cold water. Repeat if necessary until acceptable result obtained and then wash in machine as normal.

Even though she is feeling sick, encourage fluids as the nausea could be due to lowered blood pressure and now is the time for the full fat coke to keep her blood sugar level up if she's not eating.
