Thrush before every period

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 14:32

Has anyone experienced thrush before every period. I have been getting thrush for a number of years so I came off the combined pill, this hasn't stopped the thrush but I know get it routinely the week before my period - has anyone fixed this? I have tried probiotics, tested for diabetes, don't use any scented products and it is 100% thrush as it has been confirmed many times at the GP and sexual health clinic. Thanks!

Yes, I get this as well, have given up with investigations and just store canestan from different chemists ( local ones get snotty supplying it too regularly - refer back to go who doesn’t understand it either - and I also have to give a false name for the register … not in the UK).

anyone know of any solutions I’d also be really grateful. Thanks OP for asking.

Hidingawaytoday · 08/05/2022 14:56

I had the same a few years ago. The thing that fixed for me it was to stop shaving down there. Not sure how/why that worked but I'm thrush free since then!

LemonDrizzles · 08/05/2022 14:59

Yes sadly. But my resolve was giving birth! Haven't had it since!!

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 15:31

@658Doyouknowwheremysparkis Have you tried fluconzole?

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 15:31

@Hidingawaytoday I have tried this but no luck - maybe a product you were using to shave was irritating!

@LemonDrizzles Interesting, how long did you struggle for before it resolved! I have seen someone else say having a child stopped their thrush while others have said it actually caused it! Sadly I am only 23 and not planning on have a child soon!

@658Doyouknowwheremysparkis Have you tried fluconzole?

No, will see if GP will give me a script as am presuming it’s not over the counter, thanks!

658Doyouknowwheremysparkis · 08/05/2022 15:35

Ahh just checked, it’s called something else here and yes have tried it… sigh

ItOnlyAMovie · 08/05/2022 15:36

I get this!

Around 4 to 5 days before bleeding I get mild thrush which is then gone after period.

I've resigned to just buying cheap 1% canesten and using that internally for a few days each month.

I can do a proper course of treatment but it still comes back following month.

I think it's due to hormonal fluctuations.

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 15:42

@658Doyouknowwheremysparkis I did a long course of it (once a week for 6 months) and it did clear up for me but it came back a year later but I have read that it has worked long term for some women!

OP posts:
kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 15:44

@ItOnlyAMovie Yes same, I treat it fully each time because I am worried about passing it on to my partner!

This happened to me OP for about a year. I took a fluconazole tablet just before my period and another 72 hours later, it stopped the thrush before it got going every time - after a year it just vanished. I've no idea why it started, couldn't pin it on anything specifically but it was bloody annoying. Maybe try that? Just take the two pills every month regularly?

Shudacudawuda · 08/05/2022 16:01

Yes I have this problem, had it for years and can't fix it. I think the mirena coil triggered it, but it has only slightly improved since I had that removed.
I manage it with cream at the time of flare up, I also find sleeping without underwear has helped, and reducing my sugar intake.
But I can't seem to completely get rid of it, even after a 6 month course of tablets from the GP.

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 16:02

@Hensintheskirting I did this for a few months - probably 4 and it did work, the thrush stayed away but after a few months of stopping it came right back. I am just conscious the thrush is indicative of a bigger health issue (candida in my gut or hormone imbalance) and I worry the fluconazole is just a plaster and it will keep getting worst! It is very positive to hear you were able to solve it - how did you know when you were ready to stop taking the fluconazole, maybe I stopped too early last time?

OP posts:
kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 16:16

@Shudacudawuda I think I should reduce sugar too, the candida diet looks very tough but I know it does work for some. I am worried about doing it for the long haul and then getting it again once I return to a normal diet. Have you tried probiotics, seem to have worked for many on here (not me sadly...)

It was the Dutch Cap & spermicides that gave me chronic thrush. Changed contraception method & it went away, forever!
Dont use bath essences, bubbles or oils.
Cut right down on sugar.
There are some helpful books at your library or book shop.

AlphaAlpha · 08/05/2022 16:28

I get what looks like thrush discharge about 4/5 days before my period starts but no other symptoms and it's gone the next day without any intervention.
I am peri-menopausal and I have posted on the PM board about this but didn't get much response.

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 16:37

@Maybebe did you take it every week for 6 months or once a month for 6 months? X

OP posts:
Hensintheskirting · 08/05/2022 16:37

@kittykat818 I was really worried about masking an underlying problem too but the GP was reassuring about it often just being triggered by normal hormonal fluctuations. I used the tablets for about 6 months I think and then one month just forgot to take them and it didn't reappear. I hope you can find something that works for you!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 08/05/2022 16:47

I know you've been tested for diabetes which is great but what is your diet like?

I find if I let my diet fall into bad habits and eat too much sugar I get thrush.

I don't have diabetes but I do have PCOS and am insulin resistant, which means that when my hormones fluctuate during the month, if my carbs/sugar intake is too high then a few days before my period I get thrush, it then ends up in a vicious cycle where just as it starts to clear up it comes back.

The only thing that stops it is to clean up my eating.

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 17:12

@Hensintheskirting I am so pleased something worked for you, how long have you been thrush free for?

OP posts:
kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 17:14

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo I have suspected PCOS or endometritis for myself, the doctor found cysts on my ovaries but because I have very regular periods they have said it isn't like PCOS but I do have extremely heavy and painful periods. How did you find out you were insulin resistant, is there a specific test? I am a normal weight but I definitely do have a sweet tooth!

OP posts:
HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 08/05/2022 17:39

PCOS is usually diagnosed if you have 3 or more of the symptoms.

I had an ultrasound of my ovaries and a load of hormone blood tests when I didn't have a period for 6 months.

I had multiple cysts on one ovary
High testosterone
High waist to height ratio/ apple shaped
Irregular periods

I got Gestational Diabetes when pregnant with DD So have had several blood tests since, can't remember what they're called H1BAC I think which show me in the pre diabetic range unless I reign in my carbs.

I also find it impossible to lose weight if I do it just based on calories. I can eat 1500 calories of carbs and lose nothing or 1700 calories of fat/protein/green veg and lose consistently.

kittykat818 · 08/05/2022 17:50

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo Hmm, I don't have many of those - I have never missed a period, more of a pear shape than apple but I do have cysts on both my ovaries...I am getting a hormonal blood test tomorrow so I will see what that comes back with! I am hoping to get some answers soon!
