18month old DD has bug of some kind, or is it teething?

PavlovtheCat · 06/01/2008 20:42

DD is a bit poorly.

I thought it was teething, she is dribbling soo much we have to keep changing her top, if she is sitting down naked she gets a wet pool on her chair!

However, she has had a raised temperature since Friday afternoon, varying between 39.1 and 39.9, although did go down a bit yesterday. I thought I had seen what looked like a tooth coming through yesterday, but it seems to actually be an ulcer, and she has a couple more ulcers on her inside lips and tongue, and her gums look red raw. She is not eating, hardly drinking milk, and has a pout constantly, looks like she is in discomfort.

Also, has smelly breath and a white powdery tongue. She wont let me look at her throat, but seems to be painful to swallow.

Usually takes medicine ok, but wont allow us to give her any, forced a small amount down her this evening.

Oh, and not surprisingly, she is not sleeping well. Very grouchy and dozey, usually doesnt sleep on me well, figits too much, but wants to lay on me constantly.

Could it be tonsilitis? Should we take her to Drs?

I go to s**t when DD is unwell!

Hello - this is my DD exactly at the moment - smelly breath, dribbling enough for 6 lots of double bibs a day, ulcers the lot!!!! Yes definitely take her to the Drs and get her all checked out - ears, throat and chest etc.

We have just discovered a molar coming through in DD, so it could well be teething with your DD too but do get her checked as she has quite a high temperature. I took mine because I had tonsilitis at the time and thought she may have it too! They said it was just a virus.

DD has been out of sorts for about 10 days and ius just starting to turn the corner now. It's absolutely horrid when they're poorly isn't it.
With regards to medicine - calprofen (ibuprofen) helps hugely and we find that by syringing it in, we get the full dose in. Our latest technique is to gently hold face still by squeezing cheeks gently and syringe in the dose in 3 goes in to the side of her mouth. Ideally two man job but can do on your own. We kept the dosing up through the night (6-8 hours) to try and facilitate a good a nights sleep as possible for her.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 06/01/2008 21:42

If she sleeps better in your bed then you could do that - the poor thing - thye need lots of cuddles when they're poorly don't they? Our DD doesn't like co-sleeping so she's always in her cot but wants us to hold her hand constantly at the moment.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 06/01/2008 21:44

keep offering her fluids and syringe some in if you have to - will she suck on a wet flannel?

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 06/01/2008 22:00

Could it be hand foot and mouth disease?

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 06/01/2008 22:07

oh yes I forgot about that - does she have any spots on her hands or feet? I believe that treatment for that is just calpol / neurofen isn't it?

Denny185 · 06/01/2008 22:17

DD gets smelly breath with every bout of tonsilitis, keep offering fluids, paracetamol/ibuprofen (or both) for pain relief/temp control. If this is the first time she had anything like it though would def get checked over by Drs tom.
Hope shes feeling better soon

FlameNFurter · 07/01/2008 08:18

Get her to the GP today.

It sounds very much like when DS had coldsores all inside his mouth. You need to keep forcing fluids in her or she will dehydrate (I was syringing fluids in the end).

SlightlyMadShrek has been through the same thing.

If they catch it early enough and it is bad enough then they will give meds, if not it is a case of riding it out, but it will be a hard couple of days.

My email is flamesparrow at gmail dot com if it does turn out to be that and you want some support for the next few days

If you search health for "sores" last January you should see my threads

Good luck

xx

pooka · 07/01/2008 08:56

Syringe very good for getting fluid in as a last resort. Helpful also in that you know how much she's getting.
Is she still weeing - wet nappies?

PavlovtheCat · 07/01/2008 20:38

thanks everyone. I did not reply again last night as DD woke up again, and well, pretty much stayed awake since, and I worked today. meant to work 8-6 only managed 9-3!

Its a bloody nightmare. She is screaming almost constantly, wont eat, or drink or sleep. She is bad tempered, displaying signs of anger which we have never seen before.

GP was unsympathetic, said it was a virus, and told DH 'thats life' when he said she was screaming the place down. She NEVER screams the place down.

Her tongue is white, but hard to say if its milk or not, and breath still absolutely stinks and her dribble is hot and constant.

Foot, hand and Mouth - no spots on hands or feet but has a spot by her eye which is new? GP was not at all concerned about her eating.

Puthatinyourpipe - does sound exactly like our DD. She is the same does not like co-sleeping, but has spent half hour at a time with us, the rest of the night she is screaming/crying. Often in pain, but also seems in anger now too (tired/hungry).

We are pulling our hair out.

only 10 days you say?!!

she wants food, asks for it, then shakes her head, and cries. same with milk, too hot, too cold, wants water, doesnt actually want anything when offered. Has carried her milk for last hour not touched a drop. Aso, she usually talks and babbles constantly, but has hardly said a thinng for days, just points and grunts

oh I want my daughter back. Right now, I want some sleep!

Someone tell me she will get better soon. Please?!!!
Her constant crying is going through me, poor baby girl. She is really really fed up.

Not a smidge of going to sleep either. so much for my early night

I think my DS has exactly the same thing. the poor mite has just been sleeping on me and whimpering all weekend.

The doc said it was just a virus too.

He seemed to be turning the corner today and managed to eat a little bit of soup. hopefully your DD will start feeling a bit better soon too.

PavlovtheCat · 07/01/2008 21:58

oh well. I am now going to grab two co-codemol, and go to bed for a few mints shut eye while I can.

Went to sainsburys for syringe as we cant find any, she screamed all the way there, DH and I had an argument, she screamed all the way back until the last two mins, fell asleep, and is now asleep in her cot, bar a few screeches before going back to sleep. It wont last so, I might be back on searching for some sympathy.

Oh talking of which, this morning, I was exhuasted, said, I am so tired, have hardly slept for 4 days, my dear husband said, stop complaining. I have empathy for you really I do, but will you just shut up complaining you are driving me crazy!!!

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 07/01/2008 22:00

thannks trixy. She was talking a little before we went out, in between dribbling like a tap turned on everytime she opens her mouth, which is a start, and pulled lots of spaghetti from DHs plate and chucked it on my plate, but no interest in food to eat.

Has had 4oz milk today and no water. Her nappies are less wet than normal but not dry yet.

Sleep for me now though, for a few minutes.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 07/01/2008 22:06

Are you giving her paracetamol and ibuprofen? Is she better after a dose?

trixymalixy · 07/01/2008 22:10

You get a syringe with bottles of nurofen for children.

Can I just give your DH a big slap!! It's no joke that sleep deprivation is a form of torture.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 07/01/2008 22:14

Could it be measles? I'm sure there's another thread on here with similar symtoms that turned out to be that - don't quote me on it though.

PavlovtheCat · 08/01/2008 01:30

forcing medicine down her, syringe has helped lots. Gave her medised to try to help her sleep, and ibuprofen. her fever is better after a dose, but she is grinding her teeth and the water is pooring out of her mouth (thats why i originally thought teething) and still crying constantly.

She just wont sleep. She wakes ever half hour, which is why I am here, just not bothering to sleep right now. She wakes up screaming. She is so upset, and distressed, but has taken about 3oz of milk now, at midnight.

I am not sure, but think possibly her ears? she put her hands over them a couple of times earlier?

I did look up measles putthatinyourpipe, she has no rash, but a whitehead spot has come up right by her eye.

Oh and DH - he is asleep. Poor thing. He did not sleep a wink last night (can you hear the sarcasm?). I got to work at 8am, he is home with DD. Apparantly, he has had it worse than me as he has been at home. However he slept through it all the first two nights. Feel free to give him a slap.

He is asleep. I am awake. He did not offer to get up, or for me to wake him for a shift. I will have to ask him, and he will do it, with a bitch and a moan about it, probably have an argument.

Oh I should not complain, he is great with her, I am just tired.

OP posts:
PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 08/01/2008 08:37

Oh poor you and her - it sounds like you are both suffering horribly but in different ways. Did either of you get any sleep at all last night? Yes I would love to give your DH a slap!!!!

I am presuming that the GP checked her ears and throat? You could take her back in today and ask to see someone else. If it is a virus then that's all well and good but it's good to make sure that it hasn't turned in to a bacterial infection that needs treating as can sometimes happen.

They can pull at their ears when it's their teeth hurting them too don't forget. Could it be her back teeth do you think? Have you managed to have a look?

Keep going with the fluids and I would dose her up with ibuprofen and paracetamol staggered a couple of hours apart for max effect. Also warm baths and allow her to air dry will make her more comfy and help to bring the fever down. There is a school of thought that think that fever is good because it will kill the bugs and get it all over with more quickly. I agree with that BUT I do think that facilitating a good night's sleep and the ability to get fluids in is hugely beneficial to recovery.

FlameNFurter · 08/01/2008 14:31

Oh sweetheart I have had no internet so I couldn't get back on.

DS was pulling at his ears with it too. I am so so with your doctor. DS started chirping up almost immediately with the meds, but we still had a couple of hard days after that... I have no idea of timescale without them

Is there any way of seeing a different doctor? I am 99% sure this is the same thing judging by everything you have said, and the thought of another baby (and mum) going through it is heartbreaking

The only thing I can suggest is ice lollies - they might soothe her mouth whilst getting fluids in her

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 08/01/2008 20:52

How is she now?
