18month old DD has bug of some kind, or is it teething?

DD is a bit poorly.

I thought it was teething, she is dribbling soo much we have to keep changing her top, if she is sitting down naked she gets a wet pool on her chair!

However, she has had a raised temperature since Friday afternoon, varying between 39.1 and 39.9, although did go down a bit yesterday. I thought I had seen what looked like a tooth coming through yesterday, but it seems to actually be an ulcer, and she has a couple more ulcers on her inside lips and tongue, and her gums look red raw. She is not eating, hardly drinking milk, and has a pout constantly, looks like she is in discomfort.

Also, has smelly breath and a white powdery tongue. She wont let me look at her throat, but seems to be painful to swallow.

Usually takes medicine ok, but wont allow us to give her any, forced a small amount down her this evening.

Oh, and not surprisingly, she is not sleeping well. Very grouchy and dozey, usually doesnt sleep on me well, figits too much, but wants to lay on me constantly.

Could it be tonsilitis? Should we take her to Drs?

I go to s**t when DD is unwell!

Sorry I have not replied. It has been awful. It just so happened that she fell over and hit her head, huge bump so I took her to minor injuries unit. Head absolutely fine but I saw a wonderful nurse who gave DD a thorough checking over after I told her how worried we have been. We had not sleep all week, had to stay up doing shifts and I still went to work! However took yesterday off.

Nurse confirmed it was a virus, she has viral spots by her eye and lip, and said she has wax ears with one a bit pink but not too bad to warrant giving antibiotics yet. She said sh most likely has ulcers on back of her throat too, a particular type of virus that it seems some of our little ones have. We said how worried we were about her not eating or drinking anything. She said give her water any way we can, but dont worry about food for now.

Nurse confirmed that DD has been and continues to feel utterly miserable, she looked drained and tired, but not dehydrated and alert which was good. She still had a fever at this point, and I was told to continue with meds whether she seemed ok or not for a few days. She said it would most likely not improve until end of week at least!!

Anyway, she is much much better, she is not eating a thing, but drinking some milk, and some water. her temperature is down, and she is more chirpy, and last night she slept well, so did I, AND she had a wet nappy! So its on the up, but she still has ulcers and its obviously not pleasant at all. Just need to keep an eye on her water intake and ears.

For all those people with babies with this, good luck, and for those who offered advice thank you, people on MN seem to be able to offer better advice than blood Drs.

Gosh how extremely stressful and worrying but at least she's on the up. I hope even more so since you posted on Friday.

I agree with the meds regardless of ok or not - to give them as good a night's rest and make drinking as easy as possible really helps them to beat the bugs.

'normal' viruses take about 2 weeks really to run their course - it really does seem like forever doesn't it?

thanks for the message everyone.

She is now drinking a good amount of milk, and a tiny amount of food

DH bought some chocolate milk, and blended it with a banana, she had about three mouthfuls
Yesterday morning she had two mouthfulls of porridge, one mouthful of scrambled egg.

at 5am she woking up screaming the place down, ai went in to find her standing with her bottle crying milk, milk! Gave her 8 oz, gone when I got her up!

She had about 5 huge mouthfuls of porridge and raspberries this morning and even picked out a raspberry, she has not done that for over a week.

And she took a slice of bread and jam off me ad has been slowly eating that all morning, wont let it go. Usually I wont let her eat anywhere but the table, and not usually jam sandwiches either!!! But she is eating so I wont complain for a few days!

Still dribbling loads and loads, possibly teeth, maybe her ears still as has pulled on one a few times. Will see another Dr on Monday and get them to check, dont care if they think I am a fussy mother, DD cant tell me what is wrong, so they should!!!
