Ds1 has had it and now ds2 is getting it and i've suddenly got loads coming up and i'm all itchy, and panicking because i've not had it before. Should I be worried? Has anyone else had it?

Are you pregnant? Poor you

Artichokes · 06/01/2008 19:24

I had it as a child and as an adult ( at my immune system). There is not much to wrry about it is just very uncomfortable and you feel abit unwell (like a mild flu virus). The one danger is it turning into shingles which can be very painful and take a while to recover from. This is most likely to happen if your immune system is very low or compromised for some reason. Just try and rest as much as you can.

Hope you feel better soon.

lazarou · 06/01/2008 19:24

No, not pregnant thankfully. I did think i'd got away with it considering ive never had it.

dd1 had it over xmas and dd2 got it now (very badly) for dd1 we used eurax cream was great for stopping itching and pitiron

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 06/01/2008 19:26

My dh currently has it (as does dd), at age 42! He's felt pretty weak and itchy for a few days, and is covered in spots, but nothing worse than that, thankfully.

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 06/01/2008 19:27

Oh yes, have baths with lots of bicarb of soda in - helps to stop the itching.

lazarou · 06/01/2008 19:27

Dh just suggested i cover myself in calomine and have a cold bath!

oh, i'm all itchy

I just had it over Xmas - 3 days of flu like symptoms and then horrible itchy / painful spots and pain in ear and throat. I just dosed up with pain killers and got on with it! Don't go searching on the internet as there are loads of scare stories about adult CP. Get well soon

binklegoestoLondon · 06/01/2008 20:52

I had it at 33 for the first time, I had spots EVERYWHERE - inside and out in every orifice you care to mention. Took about 2 weeks to stop feeling poorly and about a month for all the spots to go. Felt very unwell and only relief came from sitting in a lukewarm shower at all hours or lying in bed with damp flannel on my face to stop me itching.

Calamine didnt really help but piriton syrup took the edge off it.

My sympathies go out to you Lazarou!!

lazarou · 06/01/2008 21:04

More and more spots keep appearing and i just want to scratch. Should i tape oven gloves to my hands like phoebe in friends?

OP posts:
FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 06/01/2008 21:06

lol. You should go and have a cool bath with plenty of bicarb, and then smother yourself in aqueous cream with calamine (much better than calamine lotion, which can actually make itching worse).

Also take piriton if you have some.

lazarou · 06/01/2008 21:07

ive got some zirtek, is that any good?

RGPargy · 06/01/2008 21:08

Blimey, must be something going around!!

DP and DD have both had it in the last couple of weeks, as have at least another 3 other MN users too.

My DP offers his sympathies to you - he is currently sitting here covered in little scars and would like to warn you DO NOT PICK THEM!!

Get better soon!

binklegoestoLondon · 06/01/2008 21:09

any antihistamine will helpp but really a coolish shower was the only thing that stopped me needing to each those prickly-feeling spots!!

RGPargy · 06/01/2008 21:13

Eurax lotion is very good too. Dont bother with calamine!

lazarou · 06/01/2008 21:13

I can feel them on my scalp as well. I should probably go to bed as ds2 is bound to be up in the night. I'm even itching in places where there arent any spots. Dh has told me to stop going on about it as i am making him itch by just talking about it.

OP posts:
binklegoestoLondon · 06/01/2008 21:17

Lazarou, I had them on my scalp, up my nose, in my mouth, in my bottom and in my doo-dah, it was awful. YOU MUST NOT SCRATCH!! Keeping cool is the only big help I think.

However, I was very very careful not too scratch those on my face and if I was desperate I would treat myself to a little scratch where it wouldnt show like my tummy or something nowhere rude! - but I still got a couple of little pox marks on my cheeks where the scabs got knocked off accidentally and a big one came off my scalp with a lovely big clump of hair attached

Please dont disturb the spots if you can help it.

porkypoo · 06/01/2008 21:19

sympathetic dh eh!!

Have to admit though i am starting to itch now too

lazarou · 06/01/2008 21:23

binkle, your post has made me laugh, especially the use of the word doo dah.

OP posts:
PortAndLemonaid · 06/01/2008 21:23

You are quite likely to feel very ill. Can you get some help in, if you normally need to look after children? There's a good chance you'll wind up confined to bed entirely.

moyasmum · 06/01/2008 21:25

Really sorry to hear this lazarou. My dd gave them to me in mid 30's , felt horrid and sensitive to the sun,it made me even more itchy. (not a problem in Jan I suppose.)
Remember rollimg over in bed ,and my blisters popping on my back, like bubble wrap.......
On the bright side ,got over it quickly.

binklegoestoLondon · 06/01/2008 21:26

'chicken pox of the doo-dah' is not a condition I would welcome again!!

lazarou · 06/01/2008 21:30

My mum will be round in the morning to look after ds2 while i take ds1 to nursery. I hope i don't get so bad i can't get out of bed. Dh would have to take time off work.
