Really not fair. Tall lass. Never worn stupid heels. Not overweight.
Any top tips?

No sorry, Ive apparently inherited mine from my mum and she never wore narrow shoes or heels !

EBearhug · 24/03/2022 13:10

Mine are genetic, too.

loopylindi · 24/03/2022 13:11

Mine were genetic too. Only choice - have the op. I had both mine done at once. Never regretted it.

robocracker · 24/03/2022 13:21

Mine are genetic. Hard to find shoes. So annoying! My grandmas were huge and her toes completely crossed over.

I have had one of mine straightened as it caused pain in my four and a knock on pain in my hip (my hips are a problem anyway). I was 34 when I had it done. The doc said usually they wouldn't do it that young but as I am a teacher so standing a lot they decided to do it. He said they'd also do it if I was a nurse. I was told as I had it done young it might need doing again. 10 years later I can see it's moving again. I'll see if I can find some pics.

samthebordercollie · 24/03/2022 13:24

70% of womens bunions are genetic. Mine aren't either. Same as you, tall, never worn heels. One of mine is so deformed now I can only wear mens trainers which are wider in the toe box and even those end up with a hole int the size. I've decided to get it fixed but am dreading the recuperation as I'm really sporty and run, cycle, walk miles every day, the inactivity post op will be very difficult to bear!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/03/2022 13:24

My advice is to avoid surgery. I have undeserved bunions, inherited from my DM, who has had surgery on hers. The surgery was apparently successful, but her toes no longer bend, making it hard to kneel.

robocracker · 24/03/2022 13:25

First pic is before, second pic is after, last pic is 10 years on.

My surgery was great. I have since run several half marathons and a marathon. They do flex slightly less so high heels are tricky but I'm not too bothered about that as it hurts my other bunion anyway.

I have some numbness in my big and second toe.

How long it did it take to heal? Were you off your feet for long?

Escarpahell · 24/03/2022 13:32

I had bunion surgery 4 months (and 1 day!) ago. Second toe was crossed over the big toe and couldn't wear anything other than Crocs. Still slightly swollen and the second toe doesn't move - it had to be broken - but no pain and I can start shoe shopping again Grin

"After" photo is from a few weeks ago, swelling has gone down a lot since then.

My surgery was transformational too. I had both feet done at the same time, two weeks no weight-bearing, two weeks of hobbling, two weeks of generally being careful and then I was able to drive again. Fantastic investment, and I can give you the name of my surgeon if you like. I did go privately, mostly paid for by health insurance.

I can now go into any shoe shop anywhere, and try only any pair of shoes in the shopSmile. Amazing!

TheTeenageYears · 24/03/2022 13:38

Mine were diagnosed in primary school so definitely inherited rather than shoes.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/03/2022 13:43

Wow Escarpahell! That was one hell of a bunion! Congrats on your new and traditionally shaped foot!

samthebordercollie · 24/03/2022 13:51

@Escarpahell did you have the minimal incision surgery? How long before you could walk/drive?

robocracker · 24/03/2022 13:51

About 6 weeks I was back to driving and going to work. I had to wear walking sandals for a few months. So sexy!
samthebordercollie · 24/03/2022 13:52

@robocracker how long was you recovery? Was it several months before you could run?

Wow that's so much worse than mine! Was it really painful? It was the pain that persuaded the consultant to do mine. I genuinely didn't think they would. How was your recovery?
sproutsandparsnips · 24/03/2022 13:53

Wow Escarpahell!
I have a bunion on one foot, and I can't help but think it is related to my completely flat feet.

robocracker · 24/03/2022 13:54

I still have really wide feet so not much better for shoes! Also still have the other bunion which causes pain but only in some shoes.

Yes good question, i want to know that too @escarpahell I have a huge scar! It's hard to see it now though but I hated it for a while.

tedgran · 24/03/2022 13:59

Mine were inherited from DM, I've had both done, but not at the same time. Really pleased that I had the ops. Only downside was that I wasn't advised about aftercare, went online and did the exercises reccomended by an American website. My toes still bend.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/03/2022 16:18

It's inherited - my DM, her DB, my DB , several cousins and I all have them.
Mine were diagnosed when I was 16 and I had an OP last year, because it got worse. No I can walk properly again.

robocracker · 24/03/2022 16:32
@robocracker how long was you recovery? Was it several months before you could run?
I think it was about 3 months before I tried exercising, I was nervous! Started with Zumba and yoga. Found some stretches tricky to start with. Running was actually easier than those!

intwrferingma · 24/03/2022 17:22

Well that nails it. My mum had them so I guess that's why I do.
Interesting surgery stories. So far mine aren't as advanced as the ones pictured in this thread. But I am goi f to have to adjust my shoe buying g habits.
Any brands yiu ladies would recommend?

I'd love to hear from those of you who've had non invasive surgery. I think my bunion is too deformed for that now, sadly!
