Is it possible to have a stomach bug very mildly?

Last night I had really bad stomach cramps all night which kept waking me up. Today I've felt really nauseous all day and have just been drinking water but I haven't been sick.

I keep hearing about this horrible norovirus thing that's going around, which I'm totally dreading dd getting from school, but I definitely haven't been ill to that degree.

Dd was a bit off her food last week and had a couple of very pale poos which has previously only happened when she's had a tummy bug. But she hasn't actually been ill.

Is it possible we've caught the bug very mildly? Does that mean we won't get it again this season?

I'm very phobic about being sick by the way.

I'm hoping I don't feel worse tomorrow and this is just the onset. I haven't been able to face anything today. But dd's not been that poorly so maybe it's not a bug?

I am phobic too but still have to click!

I am not sure of the answer IF, I would imagine (and hope) that it is possible to get these things mildly.

Sorry I'm not much help but I hope you feel better soon, I know how hard this is

annoyingdevil · 05/01/2008 23:13

Yes, I've had it mildly 3 times since September. Not all adults vomit with it

imaginaryfriend · 05/01/2008 23:15

Tatties, it's such a nightmare. I feel lousy and I don't know whether this is the tip of the iceburg or if it's going to get any worse. Or if I'm going to get it all over again via dd at some point.

I hate this time of year.

annoyingdevil, did you just feel very nauseous, sore stomach and that's all? Did your kids have it?

Tatties · 05/01/2008 23:20

I feel lousy a lot of the time IF - ongoing nausea is really awful - but IME, when I have been really ill, it has happened quite quickly.

Do you think worrying about it may be contributing to your symptoms?

pigsinmud · 05/01/2008 23:28

I agree with Tatties - normally hits quickly. The few times I've had a stomach bug I've been woken in the night by stomach cramps and 12 hours later it's all over!

imaginaryfriend · 05/01/2008 23:50

Tatties, worrying may be contributing but there's definitely something there this time, no denying it even though I wish I could!

Last year dd had a terrible bug that went on for 3 days and I got it but much more mildly. It seemed to go on and on, at least 3 days of not being able to eat and a further week to get my confidence back enough to eat again!

The first couple of times, the dc's were sick. DP and I had various other symptoms - him bad tummy pains and the runs. Me - nausea, extreme tiredness and the runs. Most recently all of us had just mild tummy pains and the runs (guess we're immune to it now!) Spot the obsessive emetophobe who knows more about this bug than a doctor!

imaginaryfriend · 06/01/2008 21:22

Can you become immune to tummy bugs though? I thought you couldn't.

I've felt lousy today, especially when I woke up this morning. I've had to fight the urge to retch all day and have eaten nothing at all and only sipped tiny bits of water.

Dd started complaining of tummy ache this afternoon and has been off her food too.

I so so so wish this was over.

ds1 and I had what I'm sure was a norovirus a year ago. He was fine tbh, just threw up about 3 times and went straight back to playing. I was dreadful - it hit me suddenly, felt hideous and threw up violently several times. But it was over in 24h. So yes, it can vary a lot in severity.

FrayedKnot · 06/01/2008 21:30

imaginaryfriend I think I had exactly what you describe last week.

Tues night felt sh*tty, Weds felt very sick but wasn;t, with really sharp stabbing pains in my tummy, which lasted all day, and I also ached all over.

By Thursday I was feeling much better.

DH then had similar except he had one bout of diarrhoea with it.

Very peculiar but not a proper tummy bug. Hopefully you will feel better tomorrow!

imaginaryfriend · 06/01/2008 21:46

Thanks FK. Does that mean we still might get the dreaded norovirus? It seems to be everywhere and the only relief I have been getting while feeling so lousy was that this might be norovirus, over for this year.

My stomach hurts so badly, really hot and sore.

I think you already have it. Adults can definitely have it without vomiting. You do get temporary immunity to it

imaginaryfriend · 06/01/2008 21:58

Do you think so? Although I don't want to have it, if I have to feel like this then I want it to mean I won't feel like this again for a while.

ScarlettOHairy · 06/01/2008 22:00

IF unfortunately there are many different strains of noroviruses, some are mild, some are worse. So you can be immune to one but not another one. Sorry about that

imaginaryfriend · 06/01/2008 22:05

I'm putting my fingers in my ears Scarlett

i hope you don't mind me asking, is it actually being sick you are scared of, vomiting? or are you scared of being ill? I am overly anxious about getting tummy bugs but throwing up doesnt bother me per se, its just the feeling sick that i cant handle

imaginaryfriend · 06/01/2008 23:23

It's everything to do with it to be honest. I have no worries about being ill with colds etc. I've had pneumonia twice in the last 12 months and been really unwell for a month each time but I'd still prefer that to even 1 hour of vomiting or feeling nauseous. The idea of vomiting is probably the worst fear but the anticipation of it while feeling nauseous is pretty awful too.

OP posts:
handlemecarefully · 06/01/2008 23:29

Yes totally. I had stomach cramps and a single bout of diarrhoea then back to normal. Ds though had trouble keeping down even sips of water for a period of 4 days over the same timescale

handlemecarefully · 06/01/2008 23:31

"Can you become immune to tummy bugs though? I thought you couldn't."

only very short term immunity, not long lasting

VictorianSqualor · 06/01/2008 23:39

DP had a stomach bug where he was up all night vomiting and had awful diaorrhea then slept for two days, a few days later I was sick a couple of times had a bit of a bellyache and not the greatest of erm number 2's. It could be because he is male but I suspect I just didnt get it as bad as him.

imaginaryfriend · 07/01/2008 00:03

The weird thing is that only I seem to have this unless dd is coming down with it as of today... I've been waiting all evening for her to call me and say her tummy hurts or something like that.
