Help - DD crying so much and I don't know what to do

DD, two, just keeps screaming in pain and I don't know how to help.

She had a very slight fever yesterday all day on and off and then since today she started spitting out her dummy, as if her mouth hurts.

She's been OK in herself, but not willing to eat/ drink much. Then tonight it got so much worse. She just won't stop crying, it's her tongue. It has ulcers on it that are very sore.

She's dosed up on ibobrofen and paracetamol. But she didn't go go sleep until 10 pm, as she was crying and has since woken up hysterically crying and completely inconsolable a couple of times. She cries and wiggles around for a good 10 minutes before falling sleep again. Then she sleeps for a bit, wakes up and cries so much again.

I have never seen her like this. I think it's her tongue that hurts and also her throat when she swallows.

What else can I do ? Other than give pain medicine?

Hand foot and mouth? Are there blisters on her hands?

Do you have any ice lollies?

Yes she had one earlier which she enjoyed.

My son had something like this when he was very small. Hand foot and mouth was never diagnosed as it was just a huge ulcer under his tongue. We just decamped to the sofa and watched tele and he survived on breast milk and 100% fruit juice ice lollies for a couple of days. Maybe the pharmacy could give you something while you wait for the doctor?

QuizzicalEyebrows · 02/03/2022 00:47

It could be an ear infection which is really painful . Call your GP and maybe get antibiotics

Notimeforaname · 02/03/2022 00:55

Oh op how awful for the both of you. It sounds very like a reoccurring viral infection I had as a child...tongue and throat blisters.

Keep trying to get her to sip on any liquids or suck on ice pop if still awake and you have some. Ice cream even. Anything she will take.

The more her mouth and throat dry up, the more painful it will be. Is it possible for you to sleep with her if you aren't already?

Dehydration was the only real concern when I was unwell like that.
As it was said to be viral there wasnt much to be done except ibuprofen, plenty of liquids and try to stick to all cold food and drinks and some dioralyte.
Hopefully its just something like this and will pass quickly.

minipie · 02/03/2022 00:56

Yes hand foot and mouth seems likely, if so it’s viral so antibiotics won’t help.

Keep giving ibuprofen and calpol as regularly as allowed. Don’t be scared to give the max dose permitted, the max number of times a day, of both (alternate them and space them so she always has some painkiller in her system, iyswim). Keep getting fluids in however you can - little sips of water or cold milk is better than nothing. Ice cubes to suck maybe.

It will be a dreadful night or two but she will feel better soon. If you feel like she is not taking in any fluids then she needs medical attention.

When was her last painkiller dose?

Last dose of ibo was at 8 pm. She's due paracetamol.. she's going to get upset taking it. But I'll have to give it to her. Has woken screaming since my post.Sad it's awful. I've never seen her like this.

Has she got a fever now? A rash?

Has she got all her teeth, I imagine so?

dipdye · 02/03/2022 01:17

Feel your pain op, it's awful when they're sick 💐

Puddlelane123 · 02/03/2022 01:18

Sounds awful OP. Try getting some Anbesol liquid from the chemist in the morning - really good for teething and ulcers.

She's got a few pimples around her mouth. No fever. All teeth are in.

Your poor DD. Call your GP or present at A&E. I rember DS having white spots at the back of his throat he was distressed and had a really high temp. I got given antibiotics

Gottamakesense · 02/03/2022 01:29

I would call 111 and ask their advice. I hope she feels better soon.

Using suppositories (rather than liquid) can sometimes help when they're small, especially if it hurts to swallow and/or they can't keep anything down. I found paracetamol suppositories useful for mine anyway. Sorry, not helpful if you don't have them now, I know, but maybe for tomorrow or another time.

I do have them. I will try again when she wakes up.

Sounds like tonsillitis or an ear infection- my little ones have been screaming in pain with that before. I had hand foot and mouth when I was last pregnant and the pain on my tongue was horrendous- so could be that too. Try ice cubes, lollies and alternate the ibuprofen/paracetamol tonight. Hope you both get some rest Flowers

MrsSantaClausitback · 02/03/2022 01:41

Not sure if it’s suitable for 2 year olds but difflam spray was my saviour with HFM

It is heartwrenching but know that you are comforting her and by being with her you are making it better than if she were alone.

I would check breathing is all ok and then just keep offering ice lollies as others suggest. Pharmacist should be able to advise. If it might be HFM you should phone rather than take her out?

babygirlmummy2020 · 02/03/2022 03:07

I've finally managed to get some more paracetamol in her. And she drank water. Success. Hope her pain calms down a bit. I'll just keep giving her both paracetamol and ibo whenever the next doses are due, rather than waiting for the pain to escalate. I think it's the only way. I'll call GP tomorrow.

Sounds like she has herpetic gingivostomatitis. (Cold sore virus)
Lots of liquids/ice lollies
Hopefully she will feel better soon

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 02/03/2022 03:24

As a pp said, space out and alternate so you are giving something every two hours, so ibu then 2 hrs later para, then 2 hrs later ibu again (so keeps the 4hrs between ibu doses) and just do it that way, as you said don’t wait for pain to escalate, stay on top of it with the pain relief.

Hopefully it will pass soon

Tigerteafor3 · 02/03/2022 03:50

Would teething gel around the ulcer help to numb it at all?

Also are you 100% sure this isn't the start of chicken pox? Ibuprofen with chicken pox makes the immune reaction worse and can cause more pain.
