Has anyone ever scratched their eye before? Please help!

I think I've scratched my eye whilst removing a contact lens two nights ago. I've got pain in the eye, blurred vision and I've also got this feeling that something is in the eye/sensitivity to light.

Will this permanently leave my vision blurred?

Waiting in A&E to be seen, but I'm just so worried.

Thanks

I've done it twice. Once my son scratched me in the eye. Got some antibiotic drops and it healed in a couple of days. Once I bashed my eye into the back of my partner's rude on lawnmower and same thing. It's really painful but usually heals in 24-48 hours. No long term damage. Try and keep both your eyes shut just now. It will be fine

ttcbabyk · 01/03/2022 20:39

I've been reading up on all sorts!

I've read about parasites in the eye from using contact lenses and water coming into contact with them and then permanently losing sight.

I think the logical explanation would be that I've scratched my eye when removing the lens.

What symptoms did you have?

Thanks

I have dry eyes and managed to rub my eye in my sleep. I went to OOH and they put a yellow dye on to check if it was scratched. I wore a patch for a few days and had antibiotic drops. It was fine after.

quirkychick · 01/03/2022 20:42

Mine felt like I had something in my eye, I used an eye bath (recommended by the pharmacist) but the feeling stayed.

Was your vision okay?

My husband scratched his cornea before. It wouldn’t stop streaming. You can tell which eye it is now when he’s tired it sort of droops a bit.

vipersnest1 · 01/03/2022 20:48

It's highly likely this is something you and your vision can recover from. If it's a corneal scratch you will be given antibiotic drops (don't wear your contacts at this point while your eye is healing). You will be called back to check your eye has healed, then you carry on as normal.
In future, keep you nails shorter, don't use saliva, etc, if any of those things could have caused the scratch in the first place.

Bagelsandbrie · 01/03/2022 20:48

I’m sure your vision will be okay. I’m not an expert but I do have a lot of eye issues (very short sighted, astigmatism, retinal issues, sjorgens etc). To damage your sight it would have to be a very deep scratch or you’d have had to damage the retina at the back of the eye - neither of which it sounds like you’ve done, and even then most eye injuries are treatable if caught early enough which it sounds like you’ve done. Most minor eye scratches are treated with antibiotic and painkilling eye drops and maybe some steroid eye drops depending on the swelling. Hope you get seen soon.

onemouseplace · 01/03/2022 20:50

Yes, I have - taking contact lenses out (when quite drunk). It was about 20 years ago now so I can't remember all the details, but I remember being barely able to open my eye because of the sensitivity to light and it being very painful.

No long term effects to my vision at all - but it took a long time to heal fully (I couldn't wear my contacts for around 3 months or more afterwards as my eye was just too sensitive).

Got a papercut on my cornea once. Agony same symptoms you have.
Had to have the flappy bit cut off as everytime I blinked it opened the cut up.
Had drops to put in for a while.
Vsion returned to normal

I have a condition called recurrent corneal abrasion (basically I have a scratch on my cornea that keeps coming back) and (apart from when it flares up and I have to keep my eye closed Grin) it hasn’t affected my vision at all and the eye hospital said it wouldn’t!

Hope you get it sorted quickly, some eye ointment and time should sort you out.

PennyDeFuckwit · 01/03/2022 20:54

I wore lenses for YEARS - I once burnt the surface of my eye by putting them in from the wrong solution (hydrogen peroxide, back in the days when you soaked them overnight and neutralised them the next day before re-wearing them). When you're screaming blue murder and your eye has clamped shut from the searing pain, they're a bit tricky to get out...

I had steroid drops I think, it soon healed. But it was certainly like having an eye full of grit.

Hope you can have your mind put at rest soon.

Ouch! How did that happen?! New fear unlocked ShockGrin
veralo · 01/03/2022 20:57

I scratched my eye due to an injury and had a flappy bit too that had to be removed under a local anaesthetic or else it wouldn't have healed. It was extremely painful beforehand with a searing sensation and also kept on watering a fair bit. Had antibiotic drops for a few days after and then it was fine. Feels irritated if I am dehydrated.

ttcbabyk · 01/03/2022 20:58

I'm just waiting for a DR to see me. I'm worried what they'll do or how they'll check? does it hurt when they check? I'm not too bad with hospitals but losing my sight is lmy biggest fear :/

TheBigPeach · 01/03/2022 20:58

Yes it literally was running for a two days, I took him to an eye hospital that was nearby and he had to wear a patch for a few days and put drops in. He got hit with a stone.

Your injury doesn’t sound as serious if that makes you feel better

UnUdderOne · 01/03/2022 20:59

Don't worry, stay in A&E as you need to be seen urgently, but when I had an infection from a contact lenses the pain was excruciating and I wouldn't have been able to concentrate to post.

ttcbabyk · 01/03/2022 21:00

It does sound like a scratch doesn't it? It can't be a parasite or something serious with permanent consequences ?

They’ll just look at your eye with a light.

I got given a long lasting anaesthetic drop and it healed very quickly. No lasting damage.

In the kindest possible way I think you’re being a tad dramatic.

The2Omicronnies · 01/03/2022 21:04

My kitten accidentally tore my eye (it was batting my hair). It was very painful and like others, I had the dye done at the hospital.

For quite some time afterwards, when I woke in the morning I would feel it re-tear (sorry if TMI), but eventually it healed and vision is fine.

I think i am too. As I said I'm not bad with hospitals but it's just because it involves the eye and every site I read on it says it can cause permanent damage to your vision. If I'm reassured that that's not the case i guess I'll just wait it out and allow it to heal

vipersnest1 · 01/03/2022 21:05

Don't worry. They'll put something called flouriscene (sp?), a yellow dye, in your eye which will show any injury. It shouldn't be painful and they will be very gentle, knowing that when your eye is hurt it's very painful indeed.
It's very unlikely to be something else, so try to stay calm.

BabbleBee · 01/03/2022 21:06

I scratched my cornea recently for the first time. I managed to get a flake of dry paint lodged in my upper eyelid when I was sanding. It hurt a lot! The flake was removed, I had yellow dye put in my eye and it was looked at with a blue light. Then flushed a bit with what I assume was sterile water or saline. I used antibiotic drops for 4 days afterwards and it was fine.
