Found a lump in my breast, not coping

I found a lump in one of my breasts. My dr can feel it too so has referred me to the breast clinic and I’m waiting for the appointment to come through.

The lump is within the breast tissue, it feels smooth, not painful and it is moveable. The dr said it didn’t feel tethered which I’m assuming is a good thing. He says it’s about 5 mm.

We have a history or breast cancer in the family.

I’m not coping with this at all. I suffer with anxiety, have on and off for about 30 years. I’m not eating or sleeping much, I’m terrified of what this could do to my family. I know nobody on here can tell me what this is, but I’m really looking for reassurance until I get this checked out. Please be kind I feel like I’m sinking. I’ve not googled anything, I know from experience dr Google never offers reassurance!!

Coming back to this post after several months just incase someone reads this at some point in the same position. In the end my lump was benign, I had to wait about a week for the results. My mental health is better now, my depression is lifting. Thank you to everyone who supported me and checked on me.

Thanks for update. Folk are right that 90% of the referrals are benign & 90% of the ones that aren't benign are still easily treated.

@Reallyhadenough4 thank you for the update — that’s really good to hear! I was eventually referred for a breast MRI after an ultrasound but all was fine and my lump was benign too. Much relief!! x

Oh love I have been here so many
times. Overwhelmingly
you will be fine. Keep busy

Oh wonderful news OP. Thanks

I am so pleased. I understand the anxiety as going through it right now but for a lump in a different part of the body. Hopefully will find out by the end of this week. I am definitely a person who immediately jumps to the worst case scenario also!

Great to hear 😊

Hi all

I've just discovered a pea sized lump in my breast, I had a mammogram last July which came back clear. I'm really worried and would appreciate any advice or support, im 59 . I'm planning on seeing my GP tomorrow.

Reallyhadenough4 · 11/02/2026 15:41

@Mangolovers how did you get on with your GP? Please remember that the vast amount of lumps prove to be benign.

Thanks for your positive response, my GP has referred me to the breast clinic, I've got an appointment for next week, so fingers crossed everything goes well.

Thank you to everyone who has answered.
@userxx I’m 48. I’m not entirely sure what moveable means. I can wobble it about a bit, does that mean moveable? My poor boob, I keep poking at it!!

@Trunumber it’s so reassuring to hear of so many positive outcomes, thank you, it’s really helped. I do catastrophise.

@BeanAnTae I can hardly look at my children either. Thank you I will bear that in mind, take a run at it!

Thank you so much to you all, I can’t tag everyone, but you are all helping to ease my awful anxiety.

I was in your shoes back last summer but my lump was much larger and dr thought it was fixed, although I thought it moved around. Consultant felt it and said that he was confident it was a cyst. An ultrasound 2 minutes later confirmed his suspicions and quickly drew off the fluid and poured down the sink. Very common in later 40’s. I was absolutely petrified before appointment as dh had been diagnosed with cancer the year before so I was convinced I was going to be putting my kids through more trauma. I hadn’t slept or eaten for days before,
