Smoking cessation

I know Mumsnet hates smokers so I am not expecting any support here - more just that I wanted to create a sort of log. I started smoking at uni when I was 21, I'm now 48.

I've joined Boots smoking cessation programme and have patches and a spray thing. I also have a vape. I think the habit of smoking - the punctuation points in the day - is going to be really hard to quit, but I realise I have everything to gain from stopping and nothing to gain from smoking.

Reasons to stop:

Health
Wealth
It's embarrassing to smoke and I am ashamed to be the last raver still at the party!

I have not smoked today.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses I started with back and hip ache which quickly progressed to excessive tiredness. Since Monday I've had aches all over, sweats and chills, raging temp and awful stomach cramps also lost taste and sense of smell today so wondering what's next on the tick list. It's far from a mild cold I can't believe that they're removing testing with cases the way they are. I hope you feel better soon Thanks

You were one of millions trapped in smoking addiction.

🎊 Congratulations 👏

I hope you recover from covid soon too.

Day 48 today. Still full of Covid too.

Hope everyone is feeling ok. Nice to see you all doing well! Day 21 today for me. Shocked how easy I've found it considering the amount of failed quits under my belt!

Escarpahell · 02/04/2022 12:06

I'm on day 3 of completely smoke free and feel great! Gave up initially in November but was sneaking 1/2 a cigarette here and there and was up to 5 a day (nothing like the pre November level of 20+ a day but still...) so decided to knock it completely on the head. Luckily I have a friend who is a hypnotist/smoking cessation specialist and she has given me two free sessions. We figured out I've smoked around 300,000 cigarettes over the last 40 years. Shock

Well done Judy 🎉.
How are you finding it. If you're not thinking about smoking then you've won the battle.

Treat yourself to a nice bottle of perfume, a gift to yourself to always smell nice from now on.

chilling19 · 26/04/2022 18:33

Well done Judy. 👍

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/04/2022 21:17

Thank you! I am in covid isolation but am waiting on a couple of lovely parcels being delivered.

Day 72 today.

I had done 77 days.. and then last night, for some completely inexplicable reason, we we onto it for dinner and drinks and I smoked. And smoked. And had about ten. I’ve no clue why as I have been so so happy not smoking!! Back to fine today, but gutted with myself 😕

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/04/2022 18:51

Oh no, @PaulineFowlersCardigan - how do you feel for it physically? Tomorrow is my day 77 and we are also going out for dinner…

OP posts:
PaulineFowlersCardigan · 30/04/2022 22:50

@Judystilldreamsofhorses I feel rubbish! My chest isn’t happy, and I woke up and my hair smelled, I couldn’t wait to wash it all off again. I’ve had a few moments today where I’ve thought ‘should I go out and have one’, which is definitely just habit, I haven’t been wanting one at all. Shows how quickly it can get you again I suppose...

I was so mad with myself, but I’m just going to get back on and reset, because I’ve been feeling so great and full of energy, with so many hours in the day, since stopping.
You’re doing fantastically, how are you feeling?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/04/2022 23:09

@PaulineFowlersCardigan i think that is good actually, feeling rubbish? Do you still have the cigarettes? If you do, get rid of them by soaking them or snapping them so you can’t be tempted. (I am the sort of person who would take them out of the bin.)

I’m doing okay, but I know I could slip up at any time. I had a really, really shit day at work last week which was the most tempted I have been. I kept reminding myself that the situation wouldn’t be better if I smoked.

OP posts:
PaulineFowlersCardigan · 30/04/2022 23:14

@Judystilldreamsofhorses thats exactly what I did before coming up to bed, I broke the last few up and binned them, so I can’t sit and obsess over having them!
You’re so right, it wouldn’t be better if you smoked, and take it from me you would be so disappointed! Keep going x

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/05/2022 16:04

Day 83 today - tomorrow is 12 weeks! I stopped the patches whe I got Covid and obviously couldn’t go out to the appointment, but 12 weeks is the length of the programme.

How are you doing @PaulineFowlersCardigan ?

OP posts:
PaulineFowlersCardigan · 17/05/2022 20:46

@Judystilldreamsofhorses you have done so brilliantly! Still going strong?
I completely fell back into it after a family crisis, and am now on week one again.
Honestly so cross with myself as I felt so much better not smoking! But I’m even more determined this time.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/05/2022 22:34

Oh no, @PaulineFowlersCardigan - but brilliant you are back on the wagon. I hope you are okay? Day 93 here. Who would have thunk it? I do feel porky though, so my next quit needs to be crisps and wine.
