Please help me! I have an impacted wisdom tooth breaking through the inside of my jaw which is infected.

To top it off the molar next door but one is waiting on stage 2 root canal and is also infected.
I’m in so much agony and I just want to cry. I could be like this for months and can’t do it.

Clove oil, but go steady as you don’t want to add a chemical burn to your problem. Heat to the side of your face. Alternate ibuprofen and paracetemol. Hot salt gargle.
111 seems to be working really well for dental probs- I’ve had a next day emergency appointment and antibiotic prescription sent to nearby pharmacy within 90 mins a couple of times recently.

Clove oil - you can get it from any pharmacy.

I’m on my third lot of antibiotics. I’m desperately trying to find a dentist that can help me but coming up against major delays because it needs a surgeon.
Got clove oil, orajel, tramadol and taking oromorph. I’m used to high doses of strong pain killers so they’re not helping. It feels like my tooth is going to burst!

OP posts:
MrsSantaClausitback · 20/01/2022 20:37

It’s horrific. I’d take childbirth over it any day. The only relief I had with a similar tooth infection was 800mg of ibuprofen plus codeine. Nothing else touched it. Warm water with salt helped too.

Einszwei · 20/01/2022 20:54

If oromorph and tramadol are not helping with the pain then you need to seek medical attention asap.

Agreed! Don’t suppose you have a dental hospital anywhere nearby OP? If you do I’d get in touch with them.
G123454321 · 20/01/2022 21:34

No dental hospital anywhere close and I have had 2 emergency appointments at my dentist this week alone.

They don’t have time to do anything with the root canal before my Feb appointment.
Been given antibiotics but this is my 3rd lot and they think it’s resistant as they’re not working. I can’t take metronidazole I’m allergic.

The wisdom tooth they’ve said they can’t do anything about. It needs a surgeon.
I have an assessment booked on Tuesday with another dentist and then if that fails a back up appointment with a surgeon at a hospital.

I’m struggling to function and am out of help options. This is literal torture and I live in pain with other conditions hence the strong pain killers.
I don’t remember what life without pain felt like, but this on top.. it’s agony.

OP posts:
Lancssss · 20/01/2022 21:49

I thought you must have a pain condition to have access to such strong painkillers. Are you managing to sleep at least? If not I’d ask the GP for temazapam or something similar so at least you can get some relief while you sleep. I’d also ask them about stronger anti inflammatories.
When is the appointment with the surgeon? Could you ring daily to see if they have cancellations? I think you should make a nuisance of yourself and tell them you’ll come at very short notice if they have a cancellation. My Mum has had urgent surgery by ringing every few days and asking about cancellations. Also ask the dentist what he’d do if he was in your situation because I’m sure he wouldn’t be sat at home in this much pain.
It sounds absolutely awful OP and you have my sympathy! They really shouldn’t be bloody leaving you like this it’s cruel beyond belief.

Ohshittt · 20/01/2022 21:55

I had severe dental pain for 10 days over Christmas OP, (400mg metronidazole didn't even touch the infection) and all I can day is you have my complete sympathy, its absolutely horrific and I genuinely wish I could take it away for you. A mixture of making sure I was alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen, using orajel and clove oil and holding a hot water bottle to my face made me just about able to function but still in agony. Phone your dentist back, phone 111, phone your GP. Phone anyone who will take you seriously, I really hope you get it sorted soon!

jimmyreckon · 20/01/2022 22:04

Oramorph and tramadol aren't good for tooth pain - I take them regularly as well. Best for me was alternating co codamol with Ibuprofen. No idea how they worked when the stronger ones didn't

Dentist also said to try rinsing with a dissolved aspirin (don't swallow) as mine was during lockdown one with zero dentists available

Nat6999 · 20/01/2022 22:15

I've just had a tooth out that had an abcess for at least 12 weeks, I've had 3 14 day courses of antibiotics, the only way I managed the pain was 800mg Ibuprofen 3 times a day, 2×30/500 co-codamol 4 times a day & 2×30mg dihydracodeine 4 times a day. I'm just finishing the last course of antibiotics now. Could you go to A & E, take all the painkillers with you that you have been prescribed & see if they can give you oramorph?

ThreeB · 20/01/2022 22:17

Make a cup of tea and leave the tea bag to steep for a couple of minutes. Take the teabag out and squeeze the excess water out. Put the teabag in your mouth against the site of the infection. It will sting for a couple of minutes and then it will start working on the pain. Leave it in your mouth for as long as you can.

I can 2nd this... it’s a godsend...used it a lot over Christmas...helped me have a good Christmas without sitting all day in pain.
OrangeShark27 · 20/01/2022 22:35

It doesn't really look acutely infected OP, I wouldn't expect antibiotics to work. Tramadol and oramorph are not good painkillers for toothache.

You don't need to have the wisdom tooth out to treat wisdom tooth pain, most wisdom tooth pain is treatable by cleaning the area at the dentists. The actual tooth is completely unerupted and therefore not going to be heavily decayed. Do you have a water flosser? If you do fill it with some corosdyl and clean out under the gum where the tooth is coming through. Is that white patch definitely tooth? Because the photograph is quite fuzzy but it look more like an ulcer.

How long has the pain been going on for? What type of pain is it? I'd be a little wary of thinking that having the wisdom tooth out is going to solve all you problems. It sounds like multiple things are going on, and I'd probably advise seeing another dentist to see if they can give you a proper cause for all your pain and actually manage it, because antibiotics and painkillers won't work unless you actually treat the source of pain

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 20/01/2022 22:36

Triple up. Ibuprofen x 3 so a total dose of 600mg
Paracetamol x 2 total dose of 1000mg
Tramadol x 2 can't remember the dosage and cba to get up and check but it'll be on the packet.

Safe dosage of all and they don't interact so safe to take together but eat first, seriously, Ibuprofen is not good on an empty stomach. If you can get Ibuprofen lysine it works faster and you only need to take 2 not 3 as its a stronger dose.

Do not do this more than 3 times in any 24 hour period and leave 6 hours between doses. 4 if you really can't take the pain but your stomach and kidneys won't thank you so don't make a habit of it.

Do not keep this up for more than a few days as, like I said, your kidneys will not thank you for it. If you do find yourself exceeding the recommended dosage on a regular basis then you will have to turn up at A&E and they will have to at least do something about the infection.

I have to do this on a regular basis and have often spent nights sobbing and rocking in pain so I really feel for you. They ought to have at least done the first stage of the root canal, to get you out of pain if nothing else. Can they not drain the infection at least? My pain pretty much vanished when a fistula opened up in my gum and drained the abscess.

Nothingcanhurtme I’ve had the first stage done Dec 24th. Stage 2 is Feb 25th.
I’m taking 400mg ibuprofen 3/day, paracetamol is useless on me. I’m taking 8 tramadol a day, 50mg amitriptyline and using oromorph at night.
This is all the norm to me. Been on all those for other conditions for almost 20 yrs.

They won’t do anything for me unless I book a long appointment and that would be 2 months ahead.

I’m trying to hold out until Tuesday when I see another practise for an assessment to see if the wisdom can be done in house or if it’s a GA in hospital job.

@dane8

Instead of paying all the dentist appointment fees Get yourself on a train to the nearest dental hospital. Mine does without appointments
Is it somewhere in london? I’ve only ever heard of one.

Ask if you can be prescribed Naproxen or diclofenac instead of Ibuprofen, they may work better, you can buy Naproxen in one kind of Feminax or buy Nurofen plus which have codeine in them.

Bideyinn · 21/01/2022 16:25

How’s it going today @G123454321?

G123454321 · 21/01/2022 16:36

Thanks Bideyinn. Pretty rough but sadly having to get used to the pain. I'm making a note of what pain killers I'm taking and when so that I can take at least something every 3 hours.
Roll on Tuesday so I can see a dentist who will tell me if he can do it and whether it will be this month or March.
Then Feb 25th will be root canal stage 2, although I am sorely tempted to have that one yanked out too.

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 21/01/2022 16:40

When that bursts hopefully you will get some relief

G123454321 · 21/01/2022 16:42

Theunamedcat, do you mean the tooth bursting through?

The white spot isn't the top of an abscess, that's the wisdom tooth!

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 21/01/2022 16:44

Are you sure? I suppose you are really! In that case I would be researching dental hospitals ASAP and contacting them
