Please help me! I have an impacted wisdom tooth breaking through the inside of my jaw which is infected.

To top it off the molar next door but one is waiting on stage 2 root canal and is also infected.
I’m in so much agony and I just want to cry. I could be like this for months and can’t do it.

Warm, salty water and hold it in your mouth for as long as possible. When I had problems I kept it in my mouth for 20 mins or more, then a fresh lot after that. It did help.

@Theunamedcat

Are you sure? I suppose you are really! In that case I would be researching dental hospitals ASAP and contacting them
Yep and it bloody well hurts! Two dentists have looked and have never seen anything like it. Fan fricking tastic.

I'm seeing a private dentist on Tuesday and if that fails, I'm seeing a maxillo facial surgeon on Thursday.
I was told by his secretary that there could be quite a wait as all consultants are being pulled to the NHS to help clear backlog from covid. That doesn't really help me!

You can safely bump the ibuprofen up to 600mg 3 x a day. I have done 800 on a really bad day.

If its still hurting after the first stage is done then they've either missed a canal or its down to infection and you need stronger antibiotics.

Keep harassing them about it, they really can't leave it like this for 2 months. Untreated dental infections are dangerous, you could get blood poisoning.

Thanks. I'll up it then. I have two problems it would appear. The root canal tooth and the impacted wisdom tooth that is breaking through on the inside of my jaw.

The infection is in both. The stronger antibiotics I can't take as I'm allergic.

They told me yesterday that I have to put the wisdom tooth first. Getting that done is a priority but I'm on my own with that as they can't do a thing with it.

The rct stage 2 is booked for end of Feb. I'm really hoping I will have had the wisdom tooth out by then, but who knows. Knowing my luck I'll have the surgery and then have have my gob open for hours to sort the rct.

I don't think harrassing will do anything. I've been twice this week alone and walk out the same as I walk in. All I have been able to do is get a referral letter and that was hard enough.

There are stronger ones other than Metronidazole. What are you taking now, Amoxicillin?

Are you allergic to all of them or just Metronidazole?

If not then you can ask for Azithromycin or Cefoxitin as alternatives.

I'm allergic to penicillin which is a pain in the arse so always end up with Metronidazole but there's a lot of alternatives for tooth infections so I don't understand why they keep fobbing you off.

CAN the wisdom tooth actually erupt or is it fully impacted?

I have two premolars that erupted sideways because there was no room for them. Once they were through, the pain stopped so you might find that it eases once it comes through, even if it's not in the right place.

G123454321 · 21/01/2022 20:12

I had two rounds of amoxicillin and am now on a higher dose of erythromycin.
The tooth has started to erupt in that strange place ( picture on a prev post) so I have no idea if it can break through so low down under my tooth line.

I really don’t want to keep the wisdom tooth. I keep getting infections where the gum is loose above it although the infection I have now I think is in the root canal molar.

Two problems all in one area. I have to just try to fix one tooth at a time and deal with the pain in the waiting bit.
Easier said than done!

Erythromycin is pretty strong so hopefully will kill the infection. The root canel tooth, if done correctly, no longer has a nerve or pulp so any pain in it is either an infection or referred pain from the wisdom tooth.

I wasn't suggesting keeping it, just saying that if it breaks through it will stop hurting in the meantime while you wait for it to be removed.

Thank you so much! I see what you mean now by it not hurting as much once it’s further through.

I’m on 8x 250 mg a day of the antibiotics.
I really think you’re right about referred pain as it’s like a pressure pain more than a sharp one, I don’t have any sensitivity to hot or cold like I would expect if nerve had been missed.

I came on to say about salt water also.
Boil kettle and let it cool
Pour water into a mug
Add a fair amount of salt to mug and mix
Take a drink (dont swallow) hold on your sore side for a few mins.
Repeat until mug empty
Do this 3 times a day. You should definitely feel relief within a few hours.

Hope you get better soon op 💐

You might find that a fistula forms and it drains itself. I had an infection under a crowned tooth at one point and a little thing appeared on my gum, I thought it was an ulcer at first.

Abscess drained out through it and it stopped hurting. Healed up on its own about a year later and never had a peep from it since.

I really hope you get some relief as tooth pain is awful.

G123454321 · 21/01/2022 22:24

Thank you nothingcanhurt and starry. I’m doing salt water rinses every time I eat (slurp soup) or drink.

It’s such a nagging knawing throbbing pain. It’s kind of sad how I’m starting to get used to it. Had to do that with my other conditions but at least this one has an end in sight with being fixable.

@G123454321 is it this Thursday that you're seeing the maxfax surgeon? If so it might be worth asking for a price to have the issue dealt with privately.

opalescent · 23/01/2022 19:49

In terms of pain relief:

  • 800mg ibuprofen three times a day
  • co-codamol or paramol staggered with the ibuprofen
  • Orajel topical
  • saltwater rinses
-sleep sitting up, supported by pillows
  • ice pack on face
-swilling cold water
G123454321 · 23/01/2022 21:24

Thanks opalescent for the pain killing ideas.
I’m hanging in there and the antibiotics are taking the edge off now.

I’m seeing a private dental practice in Tuesday to see if they think that they can do it with a local.
If not I’ll see the max surgeon on Thursday. That would be covered by my private health insurance as it would be classed as a surgery.

I’m holding out hope that Tuesdays appt gets me booked in asap. Their operating date is next Saturday. 🤞🏻
