Blood tests results help please

Hi a few days before Xmas I noticed something on my neck. I think it’s a swollen lymph node, however it’s not a pea sized lump. It’s like a long shape under my skinI can’t really explain it. I don’t think it’s always been there. But anyway I freaked out and went to doctors, doc couldn’t feel anything. If I move my head in certain ways it disappears. Anyway he said he’d book me in for a blood test to rule out anything nasty as I told him I was a worrier.

I had the blood test on xmas eve, a couple of weeks before that I has covid. Then over Xmas I developed a cough / cold / headachey type thing.

Fast forward to yesterday I got my blood test results ( I rang them) and everything was okay apart from my esr levels were raised slightly ( I don’t no the exact figure) and my full blood count was also slightly raised.

Receptionist said doc has asked for repeat bloods in four weeks times. I am now shItting myself that I have something wrong with me. I know the levels would be high if it was something sinister but I still can’t help but worry myself to bits.

I know esr and full blood count levels can be raised slightly by an infection Etc … I did have covid and I did have a cold so I’m hoping that’s why they are raised.

But I’m now gonna worry for the next month and I hate it

Anyone else experienced similar ? Hopefully someone can put my mind at rest.

Thanks in advance x

Please, please go back to your Dr's and insist on more tests. DH has just been diagnosed with throat cancer & the only symptoms he had & still has were raised lymph nodes. His blood results showed only slight inflammation as well.
That's the only advice I have. Good luck x

Pineapplemonkey · 06/01/2022 14:54

My ESR is always massively higher than it should be (5x is usual for me). There's no reason for it and it's just an anomaly and doesn't effect me in any way. No need for you to worry, if your Dr was in anyway concerned about your results, they'd be repeating the tests a damn site quicker than 4 weeks

Why would you says this to someone who is clearly incredibly anxious? I'm sorry about your dh's diagnosis but please, a bit of sensitivity wouldn't hurt.

Op, slightly raised blood results are incredibly common. Bearing in mind you've just had covid it is not surprising.

A repeat in 4 weeks seems very reasonable to me but why not ask for a 2 week check if you think you'll be making yourself ill with worry. Good luck.

@JaniieJones those were my thoughts exactly, as sorry as I am for her husband's diagnosis.

@MummyNWife I've been to the doctors for what sounds like almost the exact same thing. I am also a health anxiety sufferer. My doctor eventually managed to feel my lump (like yours it disappears if I turn my head). She's not even sure it is a gland, more likely a knot of tissue or fat lump, even if it is a gland it's too small to be concerning. She described it as a tiny pebble. I've got to have what sounds like the same blood tests to rule anything out. I've not even had the test yet and am stressing over the result! She did warn me that if inflammation markers came back raised, the test will have to be re-done, which makes me think it's quite common!

I have had experience with blood results - if they're bad, you are in there and then! Mine came back in the afternoon and they had me in hospital by 7pm the same day as the lab rang the doctor

Thank you 😊 that does help me slightly. I remember about a 8-10 months ago I had blood tests done and I think my esr levels were slightly high then too. No further action was required then. Thank you for replying x

@MummyNWife yes absolutely fine Smile I just have to inject weekly and have regular check ups

MummyNWife · 06/01/2022 15:43

@JaniieJones thank you for your reply, much appreciated. I did think that, if it was " that bad" they'd want them redone before 4 weeks. If this anxiety carries on i might just speak to them thank you.

What are you worried about OP? ESR can fluctuate so much. The GP is just asking for a repeat so he can see what's happening over a longer period of time. Keep an eye on your neck (could just be an infection). If it gets bigger, go back to the GP. It doesn't sounds as though there's much cause for concern just yet. It sounds as though the GP is being cautious on your behalf by getting repeated measurements as he can probably see that you're anxious. Hopefully the next lot will have the same outcome.

I recently had a blood test due to what felt like gallbladder pain. The result showed raised crp and esr. I was told to repeat 3 weeks later which I did and all was back to normal.
If there was something urgently wrong they would want more tests immediately.

IME, asking for a 4 week repeat is a sign that they don't think there is anything to worry about, and they expect them to be normal by then (settling after infection).

Do you happen to know which parts of your full blood count were out of range and by how much? It is very, very common for

I do hope your right fingers crossed. Sadly i do not know any more info, i was on the school run when i rang and didnt even think about asking for the levels and which part. If i get in touch with them again, i will ask.

Agree with PP that a repeat in 4 weeks tends to mean they're not overly concerned. I had bloods done in October and my kidney function was down, I was so anxious when they told me and insisted they test again straight away but was told they wouldn't repeat for 4 weeks as it wasn't worrying just needed monitoring. Drove myself potty with worry for 4 weeks, had repeat bloods, all levels fine again. Had much the same last year with raised inflammatory markers but I was recovering from covid and the next test was fine.

Hi, thank you for your reply. That does help me about the 4 week thing. Its also reassuring to know your levels were back to normal after the 4 weeks. Im just hoping it was covid and hopefully next results are normal. x

@MummyNWife hope all is well, I definitely think having covid affected my bloods so fingers crossed it's that for you too. It's the waiting that causes as much worry as the symptoms they've taken blood for!

pazwaz70 · 06/01/2022 16:36

I apologise if I've caused you more anxiety it wasn't my intention but this is what happened to my DH. He went to his Dr 2 years ago & they said his blood results were "ok" so nothing more was done. So here we are with a cancer diagnosis.

SueSaid · 06/01/2022 16:44

@pazwaz70 many people's blood tests are ok who then sadly go on to have a serious diagnosis. Blood tests are very limited in their ability to diagnose cancer.

That is not the situation here. The op has recently had covid, her bloods were a bit elevated so the Dr is doing a recheck. Sounds absolutely fine to me. I'd ask for your post to be deleted tbh. I hope your dh is ok.

Take care op.
