I never knew food poisoning could be this bad (anyone up for a handhold)

Well I think it's food poisoning. About 8pm this evening I started feeling really sickly, about 2 hours later not stopped being sick and diarrhoea. Bones are now aching, headache, upper back ache. Dc and DH are fast asleep so I'm currently in a hot bath as it seems to help a little.
I've just done a lateral flow and that negative but had covid 3 weeks ago and was really mild.
Is good poisoning really this bad and how long will it last Sad

Food poisoning is absolutely brutal. Any idea as to what caused it? I'm sorry you're so unwell.

mommybear1 · 03/01/2022 04:14

HH yes food poisoning is brutal try if you can some water just to wet your mouth and sleep as much as you can through it - hope it passes soon Thanks

backtoworktomorrow81 · 03/01/2022 04:16

We had a take out yesterday and that's the only thing I can think it could be, although DH had the same and seems okay (happily snoring away). I've tried sips of water but it seems to make the sickness come back. This is horrible.

Sounds more like Norovirus tbh it spreads like wilds fire and has a short incubation period. I know uou don't feel up to it but clean everything you touch, twice and you might avoid house full of it

Monty27 · 03/01/2022 04:26

Food poisoning is indeed brutal. Fizzy lemonade will keep you hydrated. I hope it's just a bug, as you've eaten the same, and passes through quickly.
Do you have diarolyte(?) or something similar?

Monty27 · 03/01/2022 04:27

I mean that as the others are fine hopefully it's a 24hr thing

Wallywobbles · 03/01/2022 04:27

Food poisoning hits very fast. Like within the hour. Very unlikely to be from food from yesterday.

backtoworktomorrow81 · 03/01/2022 04:31

Thanks for replying. I'm really hoping it's just a 24 hour thing. I had all my gym gear out ready to get up early and go gym tomorrow..that's out the window!

I'm sure I have some darolyte(? downstairs but don't have the energy to go down and have a look. Will paracetamol or ibuprofen make ant difference? I have some next to me but a bit wary about them making me worse

This is true. Regardless of what it is, I'm so sorry you're suffering so badly. I've had this and it's just so awful. Please get medical attention/advice if this carries on any longer than 12 hours.
Aquamarine1029 · 03/01/2022 04:34

Will paracetamol or ibuprofen make ant difference?

Only if you can keep it down.

DogDaysNeverEnd · 03/01/2022 04:47

Keeping hydrated until it passes is important. Rehydration salts in water are best but if you don't have any then a big pinch of table salt and half a teaspoon of sugar (or a big glug of sugary squash) in a pint of water is better than plain water. Keep sipping as you will more likely keep down more than you throw back up.

Haggisfish3 · 03/01/2022 04:50

It’s not true that food poisoning hits fast. It can incubate for a few days (dh studies food poisoning for a living). You didn’t eat any left over rice did you? Worst food poisoning I’ve ever had was from rice. It is horrendous op. I’d get on the diarolyte asap. Sip little and often.

Hydrate · 03/01/2022 04:52

Sometimes a nibble of ice chips instead of water will stay down. Good luck.

UniversalAunt · 03/01/2022 04:53

Sounds like Norovirus.
Particularly as you mention the sudden onset.

Keep taking little sips of water.
Rest up as best you can.

Likely you have been close enough to your family whilst you were contagious, so they prolly have it as well. Noro’ spreads like wildfire.

So scrupulous hygiene at home & stay home for 2-3 days after the vomiting & diarrhoea have passed. We all know the drill these days.

sashh · 03/01/2022 04:55

Do call 101 or your out of hours service they can prescribe an anti emetic. Usually a tablet that you put between your gum and cheek.

Yes it can be bad, and it can take a couple of weeks to feel properly better.

If, and I hope it doesn't happen, you see blood in your vomit don't panic, if it's fresh / red that's 'just' the contractions of your muscles causing a small cut. If you vomit drown old blood you need to talk to a Dr.

Do you have any cola? Flat cola can do wonders in small sips.

Both paracetamol and ibuprofen can irritate your stomach lining so it's best not to take them unless you have enteric coated ibuprofen?

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 03/01/2022 04:59

I've recently had food poisoning from oysters (I'll within 6hrs of consumption) had acute D&V for 4hrs then Diarr on and off for 2days.

Drank lots of water and weak cordial ( with sugar not sweetener)

I ate try toast 2 hours after my last sickness as I actually felt a strange hunger.
I kept it down and lived off starchy, white bland food for 2days til the liquid poos subsided. Xx

Blossom64265 · 03/01/2022 05:03

Food poisoning does not always hit fast.

It can be short or it can go on for days. My worst bout lasted 5 days. That was 5 days until I could keep anything down or in. Dh’s worst was a month and included a week long hospitalization.

backtoworktomorrow81 · 03/01/2022 05:06

Thank you so much for replying, it's so lonely in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep.
I've had a sip of water and threw up again, I can't sleep as I feel too sickly and bones are aching. With Norovirus would that make my bones ache so much, my chest is hurting from being sick and coughing.

Nat6999 · 03/01/2022 05:12

Don't drink plain water, it will just bounce, try weak squash or Lucozade sport.

NoEffingWay · 03/01/2022 05:13

I have had noro a few times (occupational hazard!).
The symptoms I had were:

Horrendous burps which tasted and smelt foul
A torrent of vomiting and diarrhoea which lasted 3 days ish
Couldn't keep anything down
Whole body felt achy and rotten
Absolutely knackered

I hope you feel better soon OP, I lay on the floor in my bathroom for a few days the last time as I didn't dare risk the movement to my bedroom!

backtoworktomorrow81 · 03/01/2022 05:21

I have been sick again but this time I can feel like a lump of sick in my throat that feels almost too big to come up (so sorry for TMI).

OP posts:
backtoworktomorrow81 · 03/01/2022 05:22

@NoEffingWay that sounds exactly what I have. Sat in bathroom floor now just in case, moving seems to make it worse

OP posts:
Monty27 · 03/01/2022 05:29

Keep yourself comfortable and warm too OP even if it is the bathroom floor. You might sleep a bit which will help. Rest is good and rehydration.
Hope you feel better very soon

Ugzbugz · 03/01/2022 05:31

I believe I had food poisoning once and had severe D and V but it was the stomach cramps that were horrific, now I've experienced Labour I can confirm it was similar.

When I've had normal sickness I find laying down to the sips can help keep down, use a straw or kids beaker etc and sup very slowly.
Hope you feel better soon.

NoEffingWay · 03/01/2022 05:47

In the end acceptance was key. I aimed to sip water as much as I could tolerate, showered a bit to feel a bit cleaner, brushed my teeth a few times a day, and accepted I had crapped myself on more than one occasion.

If it makes you feel better, the last time I was in a different city, at a work conference which we had got to by coach and I had what can only describe as an interesting journey home. ShockGrin
