Help possible uti?

A couple of weeks ago I started with what I thought was cystitis, but the over the counter stuff didn't touch it, then it got to the point where I couldn't move or go to the loo without being in agony, I was given 3 days worth of nitrofurantoin which helped alot, but at the end of the course I still had some symptoms lingering which I thought would go over the next few days, they didn't, they gradually got worse, even more painful than the previous time, I called 111 and they prescribed me 5 more days of nitrofurantoin, they helped again however they took a bit longer to work and again the symptoms was still there slightly after the course finished, I saw the doctor yesterday who dipped my urine and he said I only have protein and everything else is negative, but he's sent it off to the lab and prescribed me a 3 day course of trimethoprim, but it's not helping, I've been laid awake most the night unable to sleep. I'm beginning to worry that this isn't a uti because there was only protein in my urine (no one had tested it until this point) and its never going to go away, it's making me miserable, ita unbearable at times and I can't work or do much of anything. Does anyone have any recommendations for home remedies etc? Surely there must be an infection there otherwise it wouldn't have responded to the antibiotics at all? 😫

Bumping? I'm just wondering if it's possible to still be an infection with only protein showing in urine?

Ask GP/out of hours for fosfomycin, it's the only antibiotic I've found that works for resistant UTIs. You dissolve the sachet of fosfomycin in water. Make sure you drink all of the solution. It doesn't taste great, but not so bad, and it really works. Good luck!

Thank you, but I'm not sure they'll even give me anymore antibiotics unless anything else shows up in my urine, he said that protein in urine can be normal for some people. 🤷‍♀️

I've bought some D-Mannose today, but I'm unsure if I should take it with my current antibiotics but they end today anyway.

I'm getting to the end of my tether now, it's been over 2 weeks, and just doesn't seem to be shifting, that's if it's even a UTI but I imagine it wouldn't keep improving with the antibiotics if it wasn't 😔

Nope, no more antibiotics, my urine culture came back clear so he said its likely the infection has now cleared up but sometimes the symptoms can persist after, a bit like having a chest infection, the cough stays for awhile 😏 come back in a week if I still have symptoms.

I have started taking D-Mannose and I've just got some cranberry tablets and I'm also drinking lemon barley water by the bucket load so maybe these will help.

You can just be irritated down there for a while after if you have a rough one or a succession of utis. Have you tried the sodium citrate sachets? Tesco have them for a quid or so. If it’s getting worse each day I would worry a bit though.

Everly18 · 04/01/2022 23:01

So everything else seems to have cleared up, except for the constant urge to go to the loo, like a stinging burning in my urethra almost all of the time but it doesn't actually hurt when I go to the loo. Not really sure what I can do to resolve this, it doesn't appear to still be an infection as urine and culture are clear and all my other uti symptoms have gone. Its driving me up the wall! I'm assuming there is some inflammation there from when I had the uti, but it doesn't seem to be settling at all!

Oh his you poor thing x I get cystitis so bad I end up weeing bright red blood, it's horrific,

I sometimes get the strange urge of wanting to wee all the time sticking around after a particularly bad bout, I thinks it's just general inflammation, it does settle a while after.

I take co codamol when I get it bad ( how bad it gets depends on how fast I get antibiotics) I find that come codamol is the only way of getting any sort of relief as even when not weeing it's a strange kind of achey agony.

Sending Thanks

Have you recently had Covid? There’s a chance it’s a side effect.

Thank you, I'll give the Cocodamol a try. I had 3 lots of antibiotics before the infection cleared so I think it must be inflammation, it did get extremely painful at times so I think I just need to ride this out till it settles, I'm sure my gp is fed up of me ringing them now.

Yes, I had covid at the end of October, but i've had no issues in that area up until the UTI suddenly started a few weeks ago 🤷‍♀️

I had Covid in Jan 2020 and then in March was absolutely plagued with urinary issues. I would be very interested to hear more about a link?

BluebellsGreenbells · 04/01/2022 23:37

I don’t have a link but I did some research when it happened to me as I was surprised it was mentioned as a side effect and it’s not well known. Have a google!

RoseRedRoseBlue · 04/01/2022 23:39

I will, thank you so much. It hadn’t even occurred to me!

Fuzzyduckduckyfuzz · 05/01/2022 00:09

Azo unrinary pain tablets are a godsend

WhatTHEactualWHAT · 07/01/2022 22:21

Hi @Everly18, are you feeling any better now? I hope so. Did the d mannose help at all as I was thinking of purchasing this

Everly18 · 07/01/2022 22:32

Hi, I don't want to jinx it but I think it's getting better, the pain and urge to pee are more intermittent now rather than constantly, so hopefully in a few more day's it will have fully cleared up!

I would recommend the D-mannose, I bought mine from amazon, they're not cheap but worth the money I think and i've also been drinking alot of lemon barley water which helps too. I'll probably continue to take a maintenance dose of the D-mannose to prevent any reinfection.

Thanks for asking 😊

So it's almost 5 weeks on from the initial infection and I'm still getting the urge to pee sensation, especially after I've just been but today has been almost constant 😫

OP posts:

It sounds like your urethra could be irritated? Rather than infected?

Everly18 · 18/01/2022 14:54

This is what I thought, I've been watching what I eat and drink for weeks to avoid anything else irrating it. I gave up this morning so I rang the doctors butI couldn't get through to the doctor so I just spoke to the nurse, who wanted to test for another uti, I've just dropped off another sample (although I know there is no infection there, it says so on my own dip sticks 🙈) so waiting for her to ring back with the results, then she said she'll make a GP appointment if it's clear. She did mention it could be an irritable bladder after the uti, but it definitely feels more like my urethra rather then my bladder as its a different urge to pee ifykwim 🙈

MerryPoppings · 18/01/2022 15:05

I've had lots of UTIs in the last and ended up seeing a gynae urologist. He said that the tests the GP uses are only about 60% accurate, so often if you have symptoms you have an infection even if the test doesn't pick it up. I ended up needing 2 weeks of strong antibiotics to get rid of my infection as, like you, the GP gave me a short course that didn't work and then would give me any more as the tests were clear.

I ended up with nerve pain having had an untreated UTI for so long. Sorry, don't want to scare you but I don't understand why they rely on these tests knowing that they are so inaccurate.

irene9 · 18/01/2022 15:32

What age are you and do you do any high impact exercise? Could it be a pelvic floor issue?

Ah really, that does seem silly that they go by these tests if they're not very accurate. Does that include the ones when they send them off to be cultured also? I have an appointment with the GP tomorrow so will see what he says.

I'm 37, no exercise 🙈 but I do have a physical job although it's only part time. I have 3 kids also but the youngest are almost 11 and I've never had any issues with my bladder before.

The d mannose you are taking is it 1000mg? You need to take 4 tablets a day at peak of infection and then 2 a day maintenance dosing.
