Help possible uti?

A couple of weeks ago I started with what I thought was cystitis, but the over the counter stuff didn't touch it, then it got to the point where I couldn't move or go to the loo without being in agony, I was given 3 days worth of nitrofurantoin which helped alot, but at the end of the course I still had some symptoms lingering which I thought would go over the next few days, they didn't, they gradually got worse, even more painful than the previous time, I called 111 and they prescribed me 5 more days of nitrofurantoin, they helped again however they took a bit longer to work and again the symptoms was still there slightly after the course finished, I saw the doctor yesterday who dipped my urine and he said I only have protein and everything else is negative, but he's sent it off to the lab and prescribed me a 3 day course of trimethoprim, but it's not helping, I've been laid awake most the night unable to sleep. I'm beginning to worry that this isn't a uti because there was only protein in my urine (no one had tested it until this point) and its never going to go away, it's making me miserable, ita unbearable at times and I can't work or do much of anything. Does anyone have any recommendations for home remedies etc? Surely there must be an infection there otherwise it wouldn't have responded to the antibiotics at all? 😫

Many uti tests fail to detect infection. Even the culture tests can be unreliable. You've probably got am infection that's not being picked up on the tests. I've had uti 's all my life on and off and it was a urologist that told me the tests are crap and you just need to do trial and error with different antibiotics. This doctor on Woman's Hour explains it well.

@everly19 I'd go back and demand some different antibiotics from your GP.

I mean @Everly18 😄

@DobbleDobble

The d mannose you are taking is it 1000mg? You need to take 4 tablets a day at peak of infection and then 2 a day maintenance dosing.
Yes they're 1000mg, I was taking 4 tablets a day, 2 in a morning and 2 at night but reduced them to just 1 or 2 a day about a week ago as started getting some aching in my back around my kidney area, so I was worried I had been taking too much of a high dose for too long, the aching pain has gone now, it's probably not related but it was the only thing new I'd started taking before the aching pain started, I didn't have any kidney pain during the initial infection. I can up them again for a bit and see if it helps.

Thank you, I'll give that a watch.

I wouldn’t take that dose for longer than 3 days really.
Then just maintenance dose.
I think there is something called urge incontinence? Maybe you have got that from the infections?

It is all so annoying and you have my sympathy.
One of the things that has helped me get less of them appears to be hrt patches I’m on so think mine were hormone related.

I spoke with my GP tonight, he said he has no idea what's causing it 🙈 he's starting me on some amitriptyline again (I stopped taking it in august) to see if it helps, if it doesn't resolve or get any better in 3 weeks he will refer me to urology, he did initially say 6 weeks but I refused to wait that long, so we opted for 3 weeks instead. I'm not sure what the amitriptyline will do tbh but my anxiety has been quite high recently so maybe it's stress related and the amitriptyline will help, if not atleast it will help my headaches again 😏

It could be thrush (especially after all those antibiotics). No harm trying a bit of canesten for a few days.

But in general, just drink. Like, three times as much as you actually want to. Ideally water not juice/squash (blackcurrant especially can irritate).

I thought this, because the second lot of antibiotics gave me awful thrush, so I thought maybe it just hadn't cleared properly so since then I've treated myself with 2 lots of fluconazole, pessaries and the cream, with no change 😔

I've been drinking alot of barley water and just plain water during the night but will switch to just plain water instead of the barley water and see if that helps. I switched to decaf tea also, I could go without any tea for a few days but the thought of getting up in a morning to no tea at all frightens me 🙈

Hi, i'm so sorry your going through this too, it is absolutely awful. I felt like it was taking over my life as its not something you can really just ignore and hope it goes away. My GP prescribed me 30mg amitriptyline, he said if it didn't work or help then he would refer me to the hospital but fortunately it has helped, every now and again I do get symptoms especially if I try to reduce my dosage but I've discovered canestan cream takes the edge off so every now and again when the symptoms reappear, I use the smallest amount and it works wonders.
