Never had one before but noticed pea sized lump, white in colour (DH checked) at bottom of vulva.

I’ve heard of bartholian cysts but google tells me that over 40’s should have them removed to check for cancer

Any reassurance gratefully received Sad

How big is it? Could it be a spot?

MilduraS · 05/11/2021 18:42

I'm in my 30s but had one a few months ago. GP surgery unhelpfully asked me to send a photo to avoid an in person appointment Hmm After much arguing I ended up booking in with the local GUM clinic who were brilliant and got me a quick referral to gynae. They recommended regular warm baths and it ended up disappearing before my appointment.

Inspirationpending · 05/11/2021 18:45

Thanks for replies. I mean it could be a spot, I’ve never had anything down there previously to compare too.

Saw doctor this week with a throat infection and he didn’t even want to take a look, he made me a nurse appointment for next week

Is it painful? What happens if you squeeze it (gently) ? I probably get one per year. Blocked hair follicle usually.

Inspirationpending · 05/11/2021 18:54

It’s at the bottom slightly inside
I’ve just managed to take a photo and looks bigger than I was expecting
Not at all painful, just randomly felt it a few days ago

BIWI · 05/11/2021 18:57

I had this - turned out to be an ingrowing hair. It was very sore, and took weeks to disappear. I was prescribed a cream to use on it (sorry, can't remember the name of it).

Let's hope that's all it is Flowers

Northernsoullover · 05/11/2021 21:06

Keep an eye on it for a week and see whether it gets bigger or more painful or goes. Always worth a chat with your GP if concerned.

Aarti96 · 05/11/2021 21:08

I had something similar from what you are describing and it turned out to just be a spot. GP had a look and said it would go within a few days and it did!! Worth getting checked up if you’re worried.

babyinthacorner1 · 05/11/2021 21:09

This is so weird. I also have a lump down there and a throat infection. Mine is painful though, so was assuming an ingrown hair but then got the throat infection and wondered if my body is just in some kind of meltdown…

Roadtrip2018 · 05/11/2021 21:17

I've had this cyst twice. I was also taken aback at the size. 1st one was really painful day 3-4 then popped (sorry). 2nd one I had plenty warm baths. Wiped clean with warm salt water & it went as it came within a week.

I'd suggest you keep an eye on it for a week. If it's still there or any concerns call for an appointment. Hopefully like mine it will go within a couple of days.

Twickerhun · 05/11/2021 21:19

I had one gp not interested as it didn’t get bigger abd wasn’t painful and it went away after a few months. Odd little bugger. Pea sized. Seemed to move a bit.

babyinthacorner1 · 05/11/2021 21:48

@Twickerhun I can never remember if it’s better that they’re movable?!

Inspirationpending · 05/11/2021 23:36

*babyinthacorner1 that is weird! Maybe it’s a run down illness thing

Roadtrip2018 Thankyou I will try the warm salt baths.

HPV?

alexdgr8 · 05/11/2021 23:44

could you go to a GUM clinic.
they usually have walk-in sessions.

Maze76 · 06/11/2021 00:07

Also avoid wearing jeans and tight fitting trousers, when at home wear dresses/ skirts with no underwear. Sitz baths , salt is optional.

TheMawisbraw · 06/11/2021 02:11

I’ve had a bartholin cyst for about 10 years and 5, yes 5 operations to remove it including the gland. Didn’t work it’s always just filled back up, in the early days I found nightly Epsom salt baths helped keep it from abscesses and now I have a hot tub and that seems to keep it from causing me problems, I just can’t sit on a saddle bike or horse which is a shame as I own horses but have gave up riding as I can’t face another operation on it if it gets angry. My advice would be warm bath no bike riding and get it checked by a dr

Chocaholic9 · 06/11/2021 02:41

I had something similar. Was told it was a genital wart. Applied some solution to it for months and it never went away. Then got told it was actually a large mole with very little melanin in it so it didn't look like a mole.

wobblywinelover · 06/11/2021 03:02

Try a hot compress. Have a hot bath, when you are sitting on the sofa in the evening put a hot water bottle next to it (yes it might mean putting it a bit too close to it) treat it with some heat, it will bring it to a head and it will eventually burst and heal on it's own, i've had loads of them. Pretty painful but they do go on their own eventually. On saying that you'll have to guage how bad it is, it might be something which needs draining. But try the heat treatment first, it's worth a try and can't do any harm. That's what i've done with mine, haven't had any in a while since I gave up smoking, but I am overweight, think they're more common in larger ladies, it sucks though.. Good luck

Inspirationpending · 06/11/2021 08:30

Thanks for all the replies overnight

I’ve had a smear this year where no HPV was detected so don’t think that would be an option

I did look into local GUM clinic but criteria seems to be STD & emergency contraception to get an immediate appointment

I’ve just scared myself silly with reading they are more of a concern over 40
(I’m 48 peri menopausal & on hrt)

Im going to try all the tips between now and my nurse appointment and I’ll update.

Thanks everyone Smile

Update. Managed to get in with nurse today who confirmed it is a cyst and it won’t go away on its own so will need a referral to have it removed.

Anyone had this done?

Yes me make sure you get it done by general , the first time I went to hospital they lanced it while I was awake and the minute I got off the table I was passing out and vomiting they still sent me home the next day I had to go to a different hospital and be admitted with sepsis I then had two operations to remove it the second one being due to a hematoma forming in it, I’ve since had another 3 ops on it including gland removal and it always comes back, you have to get the wound packed and go in every other day for the tape to be cut and wound checked not wanting to scare you it’s all fine not pleasant but they give you gas and air for it. If you can avoid it abscessing it’s maybe easier to remove so no bike riding meantime. Have a look a d mannose supplement and keep up with nightly hot baths.

I'm 3.5 weeks PP and had my first cyst about 1.5 weeks ago. Quite high up on my vulva, went to the size of a grape within a couple of days, soo painful. Hospital lanced it - excruciating, I cried. Put me on a 7 day course of ABs. It was painless after about 3 days of ABs. Yesterday though I've found another one in a totally different location, wtf is going on?! This one is left side, external but just by the opening to my vagina, so nowhere near the previous one. As I've never had cysts in this area before I'm so confused why I would suddenly get two post-partum, in different locations!? This new one is so far smaller but getting increasingly painful. Hospital advised warm baths so trying to do that but hard with a newborn! If it's worse again tomorrow I will go back to the hospital to get it checked whilst I still can as I'm due to be discharged from midwifery care on Friday.

Inspirationpending · 08/11/2021 19:42

TheMawisbraw Omg that’s absolutely horrendous
doctor is seeing me later in the week so I will ask about how the surgery is done.
Nurse seems to think it’s upto 6 month wait Sad

MeadowHay hope you recover soon, definitely not what you need when caring for a newborn
