Would I be wasting the GP’s time with this?

Not expecting a diagnosis - just wondering whether anyone has a sense of whether this is a GP matter?

Bit of context - I’ve had a really busy few months with family illness, bereavement, high risk pregnancy (I’m now in the third trimester), work, Covid-related stuff, etc.
So when I noticed a spot/lump on my finger a few months ago I did not have a moment to even think about it.

At first I thought it was just a spot, then I thought maybe a wart - I’ve never had them before so don’t have any experience with them.

I finally got around to looking up whether you can buy otc wart treatment in pregnancy and I suddenly thought maybe it’s not that. Could it actually be something a bit more serious like a skin cancer?

It doesn’t hurt or itch. It has been a tiny bit crusty (sorry!) just over the last couple of weeks. As I say, it’s been there for 2-3 months.

Done my best with pics. Sorry - I know the lighting’s not great.

I’ve got a niggling worry now that this is something I should get looked at but equally feel weird trying to get a doctor’s appointment for a spot.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'd go to the pharmacist with that

TheUndoingProject · 21/10/2021 20:03

I mean it’s probably nothing but it’s certainly not wasting a GP’s time if you’re worried!

CocaColaTruck1 · 21/10/2021 20:03

You've had it for months, it's changed.
Get it checked op.
More than likely nothing but things like this need checked.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/10/2021 20:05

Would have said a bite or blister but being there that long, no you won’t be wasting their time.
Do you have the option to send a picture? (we do with our surgery).
Niggling worries are the worst, especially at 3am. Ease your mind.

Flyingbymypants · 21/10/2021 20:06

Not not at all. It doesn't look like a wart to me. I think you should get it reviewed, even if just for peace of mind.

Newuser82 · 21/10/2021 20:07

Could it be a foreign body? Like a splinter or something like that?

CoffeeRunner · 21/10/2021 20:09

Do your GP practice have an Advanced Nurse Practitioner?

We have some where I work and they are very used to looking at seemingly small skin blemishes. If it worries you it's worth getting it checked out.

Daffodils9 · 21/10/2021 20:34

Thanks everyone. I’m reluctant to try the local pharmacist as I’ve had bad experiences with them in the past and last time I asked about a minor issue I mentioned I was pregnant and they said they couldn’t advise me on anything at all!

Nurse is a good thought. I’m not sure how that’s working with the telephone triage system they have but I can only ring up and ask I suppose.

Hmm - not sure. I haven’t noticed any pain or discomfort at all.

I would definitely get that looked at as you have had it 2 to 3 months.

Daffodils9 · 21/10/2021 21:08

Slightly better lighting in the bathroom I realised. Here’s a close up.

cloudyautumnaldays · 21/10/2021 21:34

Does your GP have online consultation, with mine you can send them photos.

Whataday21 · 21/10/2021 21:37

I'm not advising this, but have you had a good pick at it??

LizzieSiddal · 21/10/2021 21:39

Was going to say the same as Cloud, do an online consultation and attach a photo.

You can also do it via the NHS app.

Daffodils9 · 21/10/2021 21:46

Thanks - no online appointments through my GP according to their website but I think if you go through telephone triage they might let you email a photo. I had an infected insect bite about a year ago and I did that then.
I’ll give them a ring and see what they say. It’s so difficult because I know they’re under massive pressure but I’d also rather work out what’s going on ASAP as I’ll have a newborn soon and I’d rather get it sorted if possible before then.

If it’s a wart could I pass it to my baby?! Like a coldsore? Or does it not work like that?

@Whataday21

There’s not really anything to pick at! It’s quite smooth like an integrated part of my finger if that makes sense. There was a tiny bit of crustiness a couple of weeks ago but really only tiny. The rest is just smooth.

I'm predicting GP will prescribe steroids.

screamqueen21 · 21/10/2021 21:54

Could it be a splinter or something that's coming up to the surface?

SmartCar · 21/10/2021 21:55

I had something like that on thumb once I kept picking at it and a root came out and it disappeared kinda like a verruca. If your worried call and see if you can email a picture.

decafforme · 21/10/2021 22:17

Have you caught it at all OP? I had something similar when I caught the skin of finger in dcs pram and it just didn't heal. I saw the dr and it is apparently very common in pregnancy to not heal but was nothing to worry about. I ended up having silver nitrate to burn it off.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/10/2021 22:18

I get clusters of little white smooth bumps on my palm or between my fingers, pharmacist says they are warts and if they get too hot/itchy she gives me Hydrocortisone cream to reduce the inflammation until they go away.

I also get little smooth hard red lumps like that occasionally on my fingers, maybe every year or two and not always in same place, they look identical to your second picture. Always assumed they are just a different presentation of the warts and they go away eventually.

I would speak to a pharmacist for advice.

That’s interesting - thanks. I don’t remember doing anything to it but I guess I could have done and not really noticed at the time?

Maybe I should at least try the pharmacy again. If they say they can’t advise then I’m no worse off I suppose. Just having a little panic about it being something serious and worried about leaving it or treating it in the wrong way.

I’m 38wks and have had a couple of things pop up on my skin in different places, new skin tags and stuff are quite common in pregnancy. One of them concerned me so I went to see the dr. She wasn’t concerned and said it was likely hormonal. I was glad I went though, it put my mind at rest :-)
