DD (4 days old) hasn't had a poo today but has had wet nappies. Is this ok?

Alot of people say yes, mine didnt - got VERY concerned, spoke to MW who wasnt worried. If you are concerned speak to your HV, as ong as there are plenty wet nappies and she is feeding well then I'm sure she'll be grand!!

RGPargy · 09/12/2007 22:12

Thanx MW is due to visit tomoz so will ask her too.

Big Congrats RG, I was just thinking earlier on today if you had had your baby, as I don't get a lot of time to be on here at the mo what with DD taking all my attention.

RGPargy · 09/12/2007 22:33

Thanx Molly!

OK so now DD hasn't had a poo since Saturday morning. I can hear her tummy gurgling and sometimes she's in pain but nothing. She passes smelly wind too sometimes. Seems like she just needs a really really good poo but i dont know how to help her!

Mine very quickly settled into a once every 2 or 3 days thing, he is variable now, I wouldn't stress it

morningglory · 11/12/2007 07:23

My BF son would go days without doing a poo (quickly changed to 5 a day when he was being weaned!). It's normal for BF babies to poo less...there isn't any residual stuff in breastmilk, and they pretty much absorb everything.

RGPargy · 11/12/2007 07:47

So do you think the mw was just scare mongering to cover her own back? When she came round yesterday she wanted me to phone the hospital if DD still hadn't had a poo by around 11ish today and they would then get a mw to come round and take a look at her.

my b/f ds2 now 5 weeks doesn't poo every day rather than explodes every 2-3 days. Once he's cleared is bowels -very loud, very smelly and good god so much?- he seems so much happier. I spoke to the hv and she said this was fine. I have to strip him off each time, new clothes etc.
ds1 didn't do this at all.

My HV record was 6 weeks for a BF baby

As long as lots of wet nappies then don't stress it!

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 11/12/2007 08:19

Having said that, ou can always try a bit of gentle bending the legs into the tummy and straight again, in a gentle rocking motion.

Always helped DS with wind, and we took up baby massage at 6 wks which was brilliant.

RGPargy · 11/12/2007 08:52

Thanx for the link. DD has just done a tiny poo - more like large skid mark - but it's a start i spose lol!! I will keep feeding her more and hope that she gets some more producting poos. I'll ring the mw lunchtime if she doesn't improve. Thanx for your help everyone.

Please can people stop with the "it's fine in bfed babies" thing, because it should always be checked by somebody who knows about bfing in a baby this young.

RGPargy, the skidmark sounds promising. How often is she feeding?

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 11/12/2007 09:12

No intent to mislead, Hunker - I was only quoting my own experience, Ds2 is fine though this was his pattern. At least I hope he isn't harbouring some sinister disorder.
I'm no professional though, hope all is resolved RG.

RGPargy · 11/12/2007 09:20

Hunker - yesterday and last night she was pretty much feeding at least once an hour, more if she was getting distressed with wind etc. I'm wondering if i wasn't feeding her enough.....

There's often a thread where there's a non-pooing newborn on here (complete with the "mine didn't poo for three years!" anecdotes) - usually they're brewing an up-the-back stinker special.

Also, often people are thinking of their babies as a bit older than newborn when they recount their own experience (not saying that's the case here, just has been in the past).

RGP, is she producing wet nappies? She's very probably utterly fine - but to say "yeah, all fine" without pause is a bit glib with a 4-day-old.

Is the midwife you saw the same one who wanted you to cup-feed formula when your DD was just born?

RGPargy · 11/12/2007 10:12

Hunker - yes she is producing plenty of wet nappies and is very alert etc when she's awake (she'll be a week old tomorrow). The MW i saw was (thankfully) not the same one who told me to cup feed. Thankfully i managed to overcome my BF problems instead!

You might be right Hunker, it is all a bit of a haze, perhaps he did poo every day when he was really new. I cannot remember. Sorry

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 11/12/2007 10:47

Point taken hunker, again just my own experience. DS had spurts of pooing from very early...nothing for 4-5 days then a day of constant poo...but I couldn't honestly remember when that started! But we had started BF group so before 10 days old.

mygirllollipop · 11/12/2007 13:33

I was lucky if I got one a week from DD3 and DD4 as BF newborns!

RGPargy · 11/12/2007 20:50

Well, still no poo from DD so this afternoon i phoned the hospital as told to do so by the mw yesterday. A different mw called me back and gave me some pointers on how i should be BF. It occurred to me that i haven't actually be told how to BF, and if it wasn't for MN and other research i have done, i wouldn't have had a clue about latching either. The MW said that she possibly couldn't be getting enough fluid to make her pass a stool and has told me to feed from one breast first til she pulls away, then give her a good winding and then offer the other breast. Then at the next feed i have to start with the last breast offered (as obviously she wouldn't be taking as much from the second breast). So this is what i am trying tonight in the hope that i might get more than 10 minutes sleep!
